This track was originally by the ‘60’s group Classics IV. Two members of ARS were members of that group and I believe wrote the original… so they’re effectively covering their own material.

Atlantic Rhythm Section is a great southern rock band from the 70's. Quite a few artists have recorded this song "Spooky". It started out as just an instrumental song in 1967 & lyrics were added later. Atlantic Rhythm Section do a good version of the song in 1979 but the most famous & best version was done by the Classics IV in 1968. The ARS had some great songs such as "I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight", "So Into You", "Imaginary Lover", "Large Time" (tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd), "Do It Or Die" etc.

Atlanta Rhythm Section is a solid band. I have listened to them since way back then and they have never left my playlist. They are great musicians, so their music is always smooth. ARS, Al Stewart, Boston, Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan are the bands that I have consistently listened to the most since the 70s.

Give the Classics IV ("4") a listen. More straight -up pop and with a SAX bridge (which someone would enjoy!), plus some subtle sound effects that I never heard on AM radio back in the day. Dennis Yost, the lead singer, had a distinctive and memorable voice. Another hit, their follow-up "Stormy", has been covered by many, most notably among them Santana.

This was good, but it sounds strange because I can't get the Classics lV version out of my head. This and "Stormy" were two of my favorite songs of theirs. As for ARS I agree "Imaginary Lover" and "So Into You" are great songs by them to check out.
That's not Rodney on lead vocals...that's the last great Ronnie Hammond...best voice in rock history with the exception of Paul Rodgers (Bad Company) IMO. Some people think ARS's version of this is a cover but technically it's not...Classics IV kinda turned into ARS...producer Buddy Buie & guitarist for both bands JR Cobb wrote the lyrics to Spooky...it was originally just an instrumental

Fun reaction! Some other spooky-themed songs are: 1. "Black Magic Woman," first a No. 37 pop hit for Fleetwood Mac in the U.K. in 1968-69 (before Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined the band in the mid-1970s), and later a huge No. 4 pop hit by Santana in the U.S. in 1970-71. 2. "Devil Woman" by Cliff Richard.. 3. "Black Cat" by Janet Jackson, a No. 1 pop hit that actually is more rock than pop/R&B and has a killer guitar riff. 4. "Evil Woman" by ELO.

The spooky part is similar to horse situations. When a horse gets scared it is spooked. The guy is referring to the girl as spooky when they are in situations where she's unsure if even insecure she starts acting spooky.
