Things are the way they are, so don't fight the current let it take you with it. Edit: I just realize this also draws back to the dream Earn had.

when i was rewatching the first season I also noticed that about Earn's dream which is the same thing that happens in the first episode of season 3. I know that he said it was a girl but maybe he just said it to get Van's attention

I have a theory that the hands Earn sees in his dreams, threatening to drag him down is Atlanta itself. The hands represent a way of life that he wants to get away from. I believe to him Atlanta is like a different universe. It's separate from the rest of the world because it's so different from what he believes life is like elsewhere and not in a good way. That's why he wanted to go to a university so far away. That's why it seems like when he gets back none of his family likes him because he burned those bridges to get away. When Earn is at his uncles house, he's told to get rid of the chip on his shoulder and that chip is a hatred for his home town. Also, when Al is about to shoot that guy, and Darius sees the Texas Dog, Earn finally starts to realize Atlanta's power and that maybe it is different, but not necessarily bad. Maybe he can put some effort into making it work for himself. I know this is comment is all over the place, I'm gonna come back to edit it. Hopefully make it clearer and more concise. It's 3am and I'm tired hahah

Great breakdown, keep up the good work. One of my favorite things I love about Atlanta is the way they always implement the Chekhov’s gun principle. It’s a plant and payoff technique used in writing to make an unimportant object, occurrence or dialogue set in the beginning of the story to become important and bring relevance in the later part of the story. There are many examples of this technique but one I noticed in this episode is Darius and the tree. Notice how Darius’ question about measuring Earn’s Dad’s tree came off like a throwaway line. Now fast forward to the end of the episode when Van is coming home and pay attention to what’s playing on the tv before the breaking news. A tree fell down on a power line in northwest Atlanta. Knowing this, it make’s Darius’ comment about the tree rather important to the world and everyday life in Atlanta. The news redeems Darius and his comment in such a cryptic manner, that it adds layers to what we see on the surface as an audience vs what we can know if we decide to dig a little deeper. This either shows that Darius is in tune with his community or he senses a premonition about disaster involving trees. Both would be interesting snippets into his character. The subtle world building and characters the creators do is nothing short of genius.

Always amazing bro! Can’t believe I never realised Earn’s deja vu in the beginning of the episode! Attention to detail is one of my favourite parts of this show and your breakdowns 🙏🏾 My personal thoughts on things like the man walking with the dog and aggressively demanding that Earn bite his sandwich is that in life we can’t make sense of everything that we face. Sometimes, things are just perpetually weird. Other times, it’s only weird for a couple seasons until it’s explained like Darius not being able to have children and Al finally understanding in S3 that they all get killed. Also, I feel like that last point might be foreshadowing a major death in this season but that might just be me 👀

I think it’s worth noting that the guys in the background walked the same way twice, but I think Earn’s “wait” comment may have specifically come from the fact that Darius pointed out the dog that Earn recognized earlier from the bus encounter. Also Earn was was so startled by the zooming police car. He might have said “wait” because he knew that no matter what he would do to try to de-escalate the situation, someone was going to die that night. A cop would be on the way soon, and the Texas dog might have given him the understanding that his efforts would be futile. Maybe he took Nutella sandwich guy’s advice and stopped resisting. I wonder what would’ve happened if he had taken a bite of that sandwich. I also think it’s noteworthy that radio bro says the N word casually when he’s in a lighter setting- daylight, but also whiteness: Earn’s (understood to be) white personality, in front of his radio workplace. But he chooses to erase the N word from his vocabulary when he’s in a darker setting- nighttime, but also direct blackness: Al and Darius’s presence, in front of a corner store. I wanted to know your thoughts about the use of trees and their symbolism in various scenes and shots throughout the episode, including at the end where the news reporter is talking about a tree falling down and cutting power for thousands of Atlanta residents, possibly pointing to the shooting the had just happened.
