well today i'll be changing the Atlas Lathe change gears back to a fine feed for a upcoming boring job. you will see why people prefer quick change gears but on the other hand there are a much larger amount of threading pitches to choose from with a standard set of change gears. i hope you enjoy me stumbling threw setting up the change gears.

How tight should the nuts be on these lathes? I think i over tightened mine and messed up the height of the keyed spacer thing.. didnt help one of the thick washers behind the nut walked away somewhere so just sanded a regular washer flat..
@OldIronShops
@OldIronShops 5 жыл бұрын
Snug should be good. if memory serves me the sholderef bolts are what you are tightening to not the gear it's self . As far as the washer goes you could turn one farly easy.

Nice job Chris! You always need more gears and hardware to get it done. Looks like this machine has a single scissor that does “everything”.
@OldIronShops
@OldIronShops 3 жыл бұрын
Yes Andrew it's not so bad it would be handy to have about 4 banjos and you can get almost every basic setup . And just swap out the proper gear and you'd be good to go. I should see what a set of iron gears would run for this machine .

The one thing that people always miss on quick change gears is just how many options you have with standard change gears.

Great tips! Does that Lucas oil stabilizer run off the gears after sitting for a while, like if you don't use the lathe for a few weeks or a couple months?
@OldIronShops

It clings pretty well but I'd wipe things down and get some fresh oil on there after that kind of time myself.

@SolidRockMachineShopInc

If you didn't have a friend that was helping out it would be pricey. If you provide the blank block with start holes already in it it would save cost. That type of work is perfect for wire EDM. I am just taking a guess that the outside profile burn time would be about 3/4 with 3 passes. Steve

Boston gear also makes one that you can get on Amazon. It is made of steel and is a lot more expensive. Boston Gear also makes all the change gears with steel. The gb series are for the Atlas ie GB64. www.amazon.com/Boston-Gear-GBB16A-Bushing/dp/B004NYAJ3M/ref=sr_1_1?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1507172256&sr=1-1&keywords=boston+gear+gb+bushing

Well, nobody actually saw me there so you can't prove anything. Actually, I do have a limited number of spares. The bushings can be turned so no reason for you not to make those. The coupler I have successfully 3d printed and I'd be happy to send you one of those. There are ways to machine those in metal as well. For another purpose, I'm working a tool that would make that simpler. But suffice it to say, machine a tube, mill a slot on each side, mill down slightly two keys, lay in slot, solder in place. The trick is in getting the slots perfectly opposed. (some play in the slots could be acceptable in place of perfect 180 opposition because change gears are available to hold the keys perfectly) I haven't figured out a way to do that perfectly with metrology and my existing tools. Although I'm going to figure it out and do it so I can put a Woodruff key slot in the opposite side of one of my broaching bushings so I can do a key, flip around and do another key. If one had such a bushing, you could drill a hole in a chunk of steel. broach it on both sides. Then you might be able to take a broach of the same width as the cutter and use it to perfectly broach both sides of the outside of a tube. A key would be required in the first broached slot to hold position for the second. Those are my general thoughts on the issue. Getting a Woodruff key slot in my broach bushing 180 degrees out of phase is the tricky part I'm thinking about. I don't have an indexing head. Your thoughts? I purchased the Woodruff key cutter a while ago proper for the job. I already had 6 or 8 but none the right size. I've been looking for a small horizontal mill to ease this kind of work and gear making. You could also cast the coupler in aluminum and scrape it into perfection using the carriage method. There must be some reason you need to pay penance. ;-) Would make for an excellent video.

+Tony Pike thank you one of the perks the a change gear setup is many more thread options .but you pay for that with setup time. I'll need to do some more videos on this but I think there are about 5 or 6 set ups and just changing the lead screw gear will give you the different ratios . I do often wish I had a quick change gear box. Maybe I'll build one.
