Atlus recently announced that they will be delisting OG Shin Megami Tensei V when Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance is released. Meaning after that you will no longer be able to purchase the original version of this game. In this video Tin & Maxx discuss why this is not just a bad idea but also bad news for the industry.

I have to say I understand the argument of being against rereleases, and the idea "the game should have been like it in the first place". But, at least with Vengeance, they are taking the player feedback from base V very seriously. If we never got base V I would say its highly likely this would have released with many issues people complained about in the first game like Level Scaling. And if V did get delayed its also likely we would have just seen an expanded version of the story we got in base V, whereas now we have an entirely new story. I think because of this, Vengeance is in a better place because theyve made many player-feedback-led changes and also added something entirely new for us to experience. I would say its worth the full price.

P5 was my first Atlus game and while I have played almost every official English release Atlus game now, that basically means I only had to deal with this with P5 and now SMT V and probably soon Metaphor. At least with SMT V I didn't actually get around to playing it because of the performance and scope but I was glad I was able to get the collector's edition. So because of that, I am somewhat fine with SMT V for a few reason, although P5 was a messy situation as stated in the video. With SMT V, Nintendo clearly helped them release it so it could release globally with various languages and was one of the first games officially announced for Switch. So I imagine there were certain constraints with the development and release so they may of had to rush certain things. I can understand development pipelines getting murky so they want to re-release games to get more stuff in later. I have two main issues with it. First, they do it so often when their major releases that it's hard to understand it most of the time. Second, given online connections, patches, DLC, etc. there's no reason these can't be updates or at least offer 20-30 dollar upgrade paths. No save transfer somewhat makes sense depending on the size of the changes, but no reason they need to charge full price for previous owners every time.

As a dude who just bought vanilla version about a week ago. I totally forgot about vengeance. Idk why, it just blipped out of my mind until I realized it was too late. Personally I’m not really upset about this because vengeance is dropping next month which is also my birthday month. And I rarely splurge too which is great and it softens the blow a little.

As someone who owns SMT5 for the switch but could not bring myself to play through it (I mainly play on PC, the framerate on switch was a dealbreaker), I feel like the list of changes more than makes up for me to buy it again on PC. BUT I can totally understand people would feel a bit short-changed if they played through it already on switch, especially if they were thinking of buying Vengeance again on the switch.

At least Switch owners get a physical copy of SMT5V, us PS4 owners don't even get that.

I agree, I hate day one DLC.

I hope SMT5V will get future DLC. I would love a female protag option, characters from other Megaten games as optional bosses/playable characters, more demons, more places to explore, dungeons, quests, etc.

What you got in SMTVV is simply being redundant, you got a game that comes with a system being fully-overhauled, a fully recomposed story(as seen in the sneak peak stream in JP side) and full bags of old DLCs, and having at the nearly same MSRP as the vanilla version

This case is more like SMT III than Persona 5. SMT III was released as a very lacking version, so they made SMT III Maniax. Same game but with a lot of more content. In P5 Royal you only have Royal. Not the original version. In SMT V Vengeance we'll have a new route, basically a new story called "Canon of Vengeance". But the original is also included in this new release, they called it "Canon of Creation". Which is exactly the same original game, likely with the new QoL.

Similarly BS, all of the DLC (including the exclusive Vita-only link up app) for the Like A Dragon: Ishin game for PS3/PS4 was removed when the PS4/PS5 remaster was released. Friggin' BS.

The fact that street fighter and pokemon the literal first ones to do this skumy trend don't anyone is a sign atlus needs to stop not only this but all there greedy practices. They are owned by Sega and so many games like persona 5 sell like hot cakes there literally no excuse for this crap anymore

From releasing broken games until they fix it 3 years later to releasing broken games so they can resell it to you 3 years later.

Why the fuck would it matter that they delist the version that doesn't have the DLC and updates? If you have nostalgia for the base version, that means you already have it

I dont understand whats so confusing. Its the same game, same amount of value as when you first bought it plus more content which adds to the value even further, amounting to a full price again. It makes literally no sense to resell an enhanced version of an only 3 year old game with added value for a smaller price tag, especially knowing fans of the series will buy it. 😂
