Great to see height speakers getting some attention! I wish more companies made speakers in this format. So versatile for surrounds and heights without using big bookshelf speakers or in-wall/in-ceiling!

@ealanosborne 10 ай бұрын
@@laatinable Honestly, it should be your ultimate goal to have everything timbre matched. But if money is an issue, having Atmos speakers that are a different brand is going to be fine for awhile, since Atmos effects are typically going to be fairly subtle and atmospheric. It’s the ear level speakers you would want to all be timbre matched sooner than height speakers. 👍

I think you should probably watch Andrew Jones talk on his Pioneer concentric driver speakers 🔊 and why he went with that design. These speakers are small and therefore the speaker response isn’t really relevant. You have to understand that the bass travels a lot slower than the mids and treble so when you don’t go with the concentric drivers, it’s going to muddy the sound in a reflection setup. You need the sound to reach you at the same time. I’m not being rude. I’m just explaining how it works. So if you’re going on wall/in ceiling etc, then you would want the normal separate woofer and tweeter, but still keep in mind that even if you set your Atmos crossover it’s still only going to produce what the engineer cut off the frequency at (unless you are using the virtual Atmos setting where it’s upmixing to Atmos from say normal 5.1 or 2.0 etc).

@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne Жыл бұрын
You could mount it on the ceiling if you’d like. But in the interest of time (and not wanting to put holes in the ceiling) I didn’t. Out of all that I tested, the SVS speakers are the only ones with a bass port on the back, so you have to use those brackets to keep that space between the wall/ceiling and the bass port.

Awesome job. I use some $250/pair Polk RC-80i in-ceiling speakers. They get the job done for atmos if you can punch giant holes in your ceilings. I originally used them as my 5.0 speakers but sounded awful as they don’t point at you so dialog was almost nonexistent. Glad to hear SVS holds up to their versatility claims.

FYI: ATMOS speakers have a different crossover than a regular speaker. In the case of the Emotiva, it has a switch to go from reflective to directive. They also offer a non ATMOS version of the same speaker for surrounds that is identical minus the crossover. So its not just an angled box that makes it different. The Audioholics channel explains this in more detail. check out their vids.

My issue with all of them is radiation pattern when placing them on top of your front/rear speakers... if it is wide or even medium-wide, then by the time the sound goes up, bounces off the ceiling and reaches your seating position, it has lost so much energy (dB) they become lost in the sound field. No real noticeable direction... it just seems kind of "up there." I'm experimenting with mounting them on adjustable wall stands high up so that they are only about 1-2 feet below the ceiling, still pointed up. Less initial distance to the bounce and should keep the pattern tighter once it reaches my seats. More focused with less distance to travel. The brackets allow me to fine tune the direction. Mounting them directly to the wall is suboptimal because you can't angle them very well, if at all, from their designed placement angle. I don't want or like the look of ceiling speakers, so mounting them on the ceiling or getting in-ceiling speakers is not an option for me (and many people).

I took 4 satellites from 2 Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 thx desktop systems and used some cheap plastic wall mounts from a $20 5-pack off eBay to set up as Atmos speakers and I REALLY love how they sound. Since they were a $60 sale each, it's pretty much a total of a $140 DIY Atmos setup compared to around $2-300 for just ONE pair of actual "Atmos" speakers that may or may not have sounded as good. Plus I get 2 extra small subs to stack together, lmao

So if you stuck the svs elevations to the wall with velcro how well did the bass port work? as the speaker is meant to be away from the wall on that bracket. Did having it flush to the wall mess with the sound any? And how strong was the velcro hold for these speakers? I'm considering it but a tad worried they'll come crashing down.
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne Жыл бұрын
The SVS Prime Elevations were the only ones where I couldn't velcro them directly to the ceiling because of that bass port. I had to carefully velcro the bracket to the ceiling, then slide the speaker in the bracket. Pretty sketchy, honestly, but it worked long enough for the tests. I wouldn't do that as a permanent solution, though. 😄 All the others, though, I would trust heavy duty velcro to hold them for a long time, given their design.

3 out of the 4 of those speakers makes a bookshelf version that is cheaper and sounds better because its a better speaker. The horrible idea of cutting the cabinet volume in half to add a dum angle that you could just make with a speaker bracket makes me scratch my head as to why people are buying these for any reason other than astetics. In other words if you bought any of those 3 speakers you were kind of ripped off even though its you're fault for not noticing the obvious. I personally liked the design from toids audio the best which was DIY with a concentric 10" with a 14 x 14 x 7 box or somewhere around there. The box design is my favorite which is wide and shallow

Not the kind where just the tweeter swivels - no - the kind where the entire speaker is angled, so you can install it in a way where it’s pointing at your listening position, not just shooting straight down. Like the Clearus 8” or 6.5” speakers from Aperion Audio, for example. 👍

Hello friend, I bought klipsch RP-280fa 5.1.0 and I want to know which receiver do you recommend between the sony str-dh790 or Denon x3700h? I actually already bought the sony yesterday but I want to change it for the Denon. what is your opinion? 🙏🏼

Go for the Denon for sure. Anything in Klipsch’s RP line deserves to have a little more power, and the x3700H can do that 🤘

Here in Canada the Prime Elevation costs about 2x more then the Klipsch R40sa. 400.00 vs 800.00 roughly. So my question is this. Would you feel the prime elevation is two times better? Would be great if you had a rating scale for each speaker out of 10 standalone and in concert with the whole system.
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 7 ай бұрын
Hmmm…yeah, since the Prime Elevation was the best out of this group of speakers, I’d give it 10/10. But the Klipsch would probably be 6.5/10, so in concert with the rest of the system, it would still be a good choice, since the brunt of the audio is still going to be your front LCR, and more subtle effects reserved for the heights. 👍

Well, since the SVS Prime Elevations can go down to 55 Hz, a crossover frequency of 80Hz is great, maybe even 70Hz, if your receiver has increments of 10Hz. That way you get the fullest sound possible from those speakers. And as far as Netflix, not sure. But here’s a list according to Rotten Tomatoes. screenrant.com/netflix-dolby-atmos-movies-best-rotten-tomatoes/amp/

Klipsch is well-know to cheat with their sensitivity figures. It's in-room sensitivity (reflections are present) rather than the standard method - anechoic (reflections are absorbed). To correct, subtract 3 dB from the Klipsch figures.

Does upfiring really make any difference upgrading from 5.1 to 5.1.2 Onkyo skh410 upfiring speaker what frequency can i set for upfiring speaker
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 26 күн бұрын
Eh…not especially, typically. If you had speakers actually mounted above you, sure, that would make a difference. Although an upfiring speaker that’s got enough power behind it (being pushed with 100 or more watts) and bouncing off 8 foot ceilings would most likely be noticeable. And I typically start with a crossover frequency of 80 Hz, and go up from there to experiment which frequency might be best in your particular listening space. 👍

I think it's key that we point out that you need to subtract at least 3-7db sensitivity (depending on the model) from any Klipsch product, as their testing methods and reporting are different from every other manufacturer on the planet... It's literally the largest industry bamboozle by a manufacturer... How many Klipsch owners do you see on all these forums saying, "Look at my (insert Klipsch model here) and how they are 98db sensitive compared to (insert model here of other brands) and their 92 dB sensitivity... WRONG! - If we were to actually test them on the same playing field you would see the Klipsch would come in WAYYYY lower, while typically, other brands would be super close to their claim.
