I enjoyed the Monty Python reference at the start. Thankfully the cheesemonger's shop wasn't uncontaminated by cheese, so you didn't have to shoot him. That would have been a senseless waste of a human life. Also: Good that the cat hadn't eaten the very runny camembert.

I love the word comestibles. We had a very haughty English teacher who, to be fair, played up to his cartoonish character. Mr Stoney, claimed to be ex SAS, pronounced everyone's surname phonetically to wind us up, but most importantly he called sweets, crisps & biscuits "Sub-cultural comestibles", as do I 42 years later.

@@rosemarymee Brexit has been an unmitigated disaster - the UK economy is £140 Billion smaller, there's 1.8 Million fewer jobs, a massive slump in goods trading between the UK and EU. As for immigration, that's fallen FROM the EU BUT has risen from countries OUTSIDE the EU, so no real change. The "take back control" battle cry was, of course, yet another Brexit lie.

@@SvobodovaEva Yes! That was the name. Hermelin - in Swedish that means a kind of weasel (Mustela Erminea), so to me it seems like a very weird name for a cheese. Canned horse meat goulash? That sounds interesting, must look out for that when I'm next somewhere near. Just last week I improved some Croatian canned goulash. Surprisingly good, but much better with a few tbsp of fresh Hungarian paprika.

I have been a bit down lately. I feel a bit like I’m losing faith in the world after recently being scammed by a friend. Humanity seems cruel and devious right now, as I have experienced several bad turns by others. I’m a Christian, I strive to be the best version of myself and try really hard to be respectful and kind to everyone, trying not to judge and giving everyone a chance. Today, watching your simple kind act of plugging “The Fridge” on your channel for no recompense, suddenly made me snap out of my depression. There are all different ways to show kindness and that was very nice of you to do that. Sometimes it’s hard to see the kindnesses of others, when your life has been changed dramatically by someone else’s greedy and selfish actions. I have been in a hole for a few months, wondering how I climb out. Thank you for restoring my faith in humanity and waking me up. I will recover. By your simple action, it has changed things for me. There are still good and kind people out there. By the way, keep your stinky goat cheese out of my fridge! lol. Whilst I quite enjoy a pungent cheese, like Stinking Bishop, I draw the line at goats cheese. As you say, it is way too goaty 😂. Looking forward to day 4 . xx

I buy the Lidl industrial cheese, I call it decoy cheese to keep greedy paws off of the vintage cheddar and Redstone which will disappear in a couple of days otherwise.
@AtomicShrimp
@AtomicShrimp Ай бұрын
The properties of the stuff seem to vary quite a lot - sometimes it's a bit on the mild/rubbery side, other times it's actually pretty decent mature cheddar in there. I assume there's some variety in the sourcing. I do find Lidl's offering to be a bit nicer than the equivalent budget industrial block from some other supermarkets.
@andymerrett
@andymerrett Ай бұрын
I have toyed with buying a second fridge with a lock on it. Even with the strategy you suggest, the higher quality cheese had to be stored in the fridge. It’s quite difficult to hide items this way. Sometimes I might hide smaller things behind some vegetables.
@juliajacobs1848
@juliajacobs1848 Ай бұрын
I was tempted to get a mini fridge and hide it in the spare bedroom, but the decoy cheese seems to work. I put the good stuff in a bread bag tucked under the veg, nobody looks there, it's easier to grab the decoy..

I agree that the quality does change, not a fan of the rubbery stuff eithe r. However differing quality in cheese, even from the same producers is a thing. My Mum always purchased farmhouse cheddar from the same place, always good but at times exceptionally good. I was told it depends on the milk cycle of the cow, the time of year, the quality of the grass and who milked the cow, as well as who made the cheese and how and where it was aged. It appears the is a lot of variables in cheese making.

You remind me so much of my eldest brother. He loved trying different cheeses and often brought something pungent home with him when he visited! He was in raptures when he discovered a cheese shop had opened in our home town and visited it every day that Christmas (when they were open) to find his next treasure! Sadly a great many were off limits for me due to major mould allergies (related to penicillin). When those were being tried, I had to leave the room as just the spores could trigger a reaction. Nice to see Jenny enjoying tasting with you, and Eva getting her cheese tax!

The cheese theme really got hold of me, and I decided to get into my annual Christmas block of Norwegian gjetost. So, while watching your video, I had a late supper of buttered toast with thin slices of gjetost melting into it, red grapes and neat vodka. (Hey - you go with what you've got.) Gjetost is a very different cheese - whey from goat cheese manufacture, cooked down into a sweet and delicous nutty carmel substance. There is nothing that says Christmas morning breakfast to me like buttered fruit bread toast with gjetost melting into it. The stuff is divine. Use a cheese slicer to cut meltable paper thin slices.

If I had a nickel for every British youtuber's December advent calendar series I'm watching I'd have 10 cents... but I'm glad Ashen's Advent calendar has company on my feed for a change...

Love meals consisting of cheese and pickings, was fun to hear both of you and Jenny's thoughts on the cheeses! Ripe bleu cheese is one of my favorites too. When I visited Seattle a couple months ago, one of the stores near the Pike Street Market had small off cuts for sale at a very reasonable price and thought it was a great because there was just enough there to have a nice taste of it without having to worry about needing to store it.

I did spot some Cornish Yarg in amongst that lovely display. A nice basic cheese wrapped in nettle or wild garlic leaves. And fun to say.
