The geopolitical realities of the post-WW2 world were defined by one major factor: a nuclear arms race between the Soviets and the Americans.
In a world where the two largest superpowers began to amass weapons of massive destruction, on a scale previously unheard of, other powerful nations quickly elected not to be dependent on fate alone, and too started their own nuclear programs, with the vision of securing their own nuclear arsenals.
The goal was never to use them - but rather only possess them, and let their presence act as deterrence.
As tensions between NATO and Russia rise in the wake of Putin's aggression against Ukraine, and Russian nuclear warheads are moved to Belarus and presumably Kaliningrad, the issue of Europe's nuclear deterrence emerges.

Nuclear weapons programs are incredibly expensive and a hassle to maintain and protect. The USA, UK, and France nuclear arsenals should be sufficient to protect all of NATO. But perhaps other NATO members could help subsidize some of the costs in exchange for having more influence and cooperation with the use and storage policies for nuclear weapons of the nuclear power members.

US style nuclear sharing is one model that could be expanded to include more countries. But it is also possible to have other arrangements such as basing of nuclear weapons in some other countries by their request but without any mechanism for sharing them. If the UK and France each expanded their stockpiles by just 25% or so it could be plenty for a credible deterrent in forward deployed weapons caches using either structure type.

Russia is surrounded by US SSBNs so I don't think it would go one way as they seem to think? I don't think our weapons failure rate would be even 1 percent of Russian weapons.

Except, the US would be hard pressed to use them if need be. It would take a lot of beurocracy like we see with the aid package for Ukraine. It's more a question about who is in control of them than if there are enough of them.

Well, most people think you do some research, do some engineering and voila, you are a nuked country. Well, the game starts when ou recognize that you need a delivery system like ICBMs or at least to defend Europe from Russia mid range missiles. Then you find out that Russia then knows your static silos and you have to invest in nuclear armed submarines. To protet them you need a fleet. Not one but 10.
