Atomos Shinobi - Still worth it in 2022?

How did you get the focus box to show up on your monitor? I can't find any settings that mention how to get the focus box to show up. It would be nice to see the center of the monitor :)

OVERHEATING! It is possible that no one mentions the abnormal overheating of the Atomos Shinobi monitor??? I have two Shinobi monitors and they both overheat so much - I fear they will melt, even in studio conditions at 23c. I wrote to Atomos about my problem but they still haven't responded…

i recently bought it but i dont have that vertical aspect Ratio. There is any form to update the monitor? i cant find the 10.1 update not even on the website :( i got stuck on 10.02

Just bought this monitor. Thanks for your video. I'm just now messing around with it and so far it seems really great. I have one question. My display doesn't appear to take up the whole glass. There's almost a half-inch of black on either side. My camera is set to record 16:9. Am I missing something? Thanks again.

I only used it with my A7IV so I’m not sure about other cameras, but I also had empty black space on the sides when my camera was in photo mode and not video mode. Once I switched to video mode the entire display was utilized.

@@UmaiPixel Thanks for your reply. I actually have three Sonys and couldn't figure this out. I contacted Atomos support and they were helpful. One thing was, as you say...I needed to be in video mode. But the thing helped fix it on all three cameras was turning HDMI display output to "off." I'm not sure why that made a difference, but it did. In any case, all seems to be fine when using the monitor on all three Sonys. Thanks again for taking the time to get back to me.

What if I record 4k@60p videos with my camera? Doesn't the Shinobi output any image at all then? Theoretically, the 60p signal would simply have to be output in 4k30p. Right?

Hi i just bought shinobi,i am using it with canon R6 but on top left corner (of shinobi) ,the input is at HD50fps ,even when i change to other settings for some reason. But the video files/ recording is ok. Not sure whats the problem

Question but I have never used external monitor. Do I need 4k/60HZ Or 4k/30HZ cable to use shinobi with a7siii ? I 90% of the time shoot slow motion in high bit rate so just want to make sure I get the correct cable Thanks

The Shinobi only works up to 30Hz in 4k unlike the Ninja V. Regardless, I would still get a 60Hz cable if possible in case you ever purchase other equipment that can do 4k at 60Hz😀

Can you please tell me how did you get the time code off the screen? I have a BMPCC 4K, and I can't get those menu items below, and the time code always stays. Thank you.

I’m not sure what menu item it is, but you can swipe left and right on the options in the bottom of the screen to reveal more options. You might already know this, but it’s something that wasn’t quite obvious to me when I was using the Shinobi for the first time.

My grid disappears on the back of my camera when I plug in the atomos coiled HDMI cable I have. Could it be a compatibility issue?

Different cameras behave differently when using an external monitor. Gerald Undone mentioned many times about some feature (I forget what) on Sony cameras that didn’t work when using external HDMI output. If you’re not having a frame rate or resolution issue, I doubt there’s any issue with your hdmi cable and is probably just one of those quirks that’s specific to your camera when outputting to hdmi. I doubt this comment will help you much, but I’m just sharing my take on the issue. Best of luck to you in fixing your issue.

I just got this monitor and it works great. I thought though when I bought it that it could present grid lines but I don't see this function anywhere in the settings, and there is a vague description about them in the manual. Does this have grid lines?

no it doesnt, yet if your camera can display grid lines your monitor should show them as well. But no internal grind lines in monitor.

I’ve inly tried using Sony’s Imaging Edge app. I know there are more options out there, but I’d rather not spend my time to try them all. Also, what happens if your phone rings when you’re monitoring an important shoot? I don’t want to find out the hard way 😅

Mine gets hot too. I’m guessing it’s made to handle it, but I do turn the brightness down on mine if I can to help it run cooler.

hello. I am having a problem with my atomos shinobi. Was wondering if you know weather the shinobi works with only with mirroless cameras . Both on my 5d m2 and my 60 d, once i start to record the screen goes black. It does not let me monitor while recording but it does let me see playback. Is there somewhat of a fix for this or is my cameras just to old for its use??

I think that all cameras, mirrorless or not, have potential limitations like the one you mention. While it’s hard to know for sure, I’d say that the older your camera is, the more likely you’re going to encounter these types of limitations, be it a mirrorless camera or dslr. Sorry to hear you’re having problems.
