I was in a real religious cult before. And I can assure you all that the way Oden's character is developed is EXACTLY how cult leader manipulate people. Look up the definitions for narcissistic, gaslighting, and manipulation, put them together, and that's what real cult leaders are like. They guilt-trip everyone, excuse themselves, and claim themselves righteous for everything they do. They are beings of concentrated evil, twisting words and dripping with hypocrisy in every word. Oden is exactly like them. It's horrible and they deserve no mercy and full judgment. Also understand they make a conscious choice to do what they're doing. Don't think they're not right in the head. No, they willingly commit evil. They deserve to be punished.

Long ago I read a twitter status which went along the lines "I never want my children to think "I messed up my dad's gonna kill me" I want them to hink "I messed up, I have to call my dad" and Atreus was thinking exactly the same. As soon as he knew he fucked up of not insignificant proportions the first person he turned to was his dad. Kratos might have been a little distant, short tempered sometimes, and he might have pushed his training, but nobody can deny it that he is a good father. Because his son knows, no matter what, no matter who he chooses to be. His Father will be always there. They came a long way since Atreus saying that his father should've died instead of his mother. The way he says “what do I call you” is just really impactful to me. It’s a father who sees a young man growing into his own, one who’s struggling with his identity, and the first question he asks, almost in a submissive and apologetic tone, is that. His primary concern is making sure his son knows that, whoever he chooses to be, he will be his father. As someone with a very rocky relationship with my father, this touched my heart

Personally I feel is the opposite, he seems angry when asking it as if telling him, "are you gonna let the Loki tale get over your head again, or be my son and listen to me for once?!" But then he notices what he's going back to (and how well *that* worked out), and does what he *should* do, as awkward as it is for the 'God of War'. Hugging his son so he could feel safe and loved. It really shows how close they’ve grown since the last game when Atreus was constantly upset that it was Faye that was gone and not Kratos. And I think Kratos was just shocked to have Atreus back, he probably thought he had lost him to Atreus’s vision of being Loki and finding answers with Odin.

A perfect moment of Odin's manipulation is how in Asgard he's seen as calm, understanding, and reasonable person when confronted with the garm situation as well as the missing mask piece. Contrast to "Tyr" immediately casting blame on Atreus for the realm tears and making it all seem as his fault, most likely in an effort to dissuade Atreus from his father and friends.

The lines about the company Atreus keeps and how one of his ravens would be waiting for him in his OLD home show that Odin knew Atreus was hanging around multiple people, not just Kratos, who are his enemies, and that it wasn't at the house him and Thor visited. Exactly, and since his raven spies can't enter the realm between realms, the ONLY way for him to have such knowledge was for him to either have physically been there and experienced everything firsthand, OR if he had a mole hidden among the people in Sindri and Brok's house. Since the second scenario is entirely unlikely, the former was the only valid explanation. Letting Mimir, Freya and Odin Tyr mildly chastise Atreus before cutting them off is such a dad thing to do. I think it's more like Kratos had no idea who Garm is, how bad the situation is, the context of Hel Walkers popping out of nowhere in a place where it should be impossible for them to reach, and what Atreus is talking about when he says it's his fault. so he lets the Norse experts (Mimir, "Tyr" and Freya) speak so that he understands the weight of the situation, then cuts them off so that Atreus doesn't feel worse than he already is, then says the one thing his son REALLY needed to hear from the most important person in his life; "We'll fix it"

I think this scene is really touching on multiple levels. When Kratos visits the Nors you see his worst nightmare is losing his son to Odin, driving his own kid away. Also when he asks what do I call you, you can hear that fear coming through, that he still might have lost him. But when he runs in for the hug you can see the relief. He is so relieved that his son still wants him as his father. That he hasn’t chosen Odin over him.

I think it's so heartfelt and in character how Kratos stops his hug momentarily before going back into it again. It speaks volumes about his thought process. Initially he reciprocates glad that Atreus is safe, though in line with his demeanor the hug would be brief. But seeing as how Atreus continued to hug him tightly, Kratos knew better as a parent that his son needed it more and then asked him what's wrong. I also think it could be a small vestige of how he would admit to Atreus later on that he was falling back into his old ways of being distrustful. The hug was a way of showing that he was finally getting past that. Edit: Looking at the comments here, I feel that I should say some things; things that should've been said earlier. To everyone, I am overwhelmed by and greatly appreciate your support and positivity in the comments. I am also thankful to those who have defended me. Everyone has the right to express themselves as they wish, this we can all get behind on I’m sure. But there is also value in silence and letting sleeping dogs lie, when it counts. By this, I mean that while I appreciate your support in expressing opinions and passion in art, I see no need in hammering down or singling out another individual to drive a point across. If anything, continuing to do so becomes counterproductive and just turns into another form of bullying altogether. My heart soars that we have such positivity present here, but let us take care not to let such passion indirectly be channeled into what we strive to fight against. To set a record straight, I never took the comment to be directly attacking or that hurtful. As many of you have noticed, yes my response was a way of turning the cheek; a more playful and positive response. Additionally, I know how verbose I can be as a person, and sometimes that can be off putting to others. Maybe it’s not something to apologize for, but I would rather excuse myself than leave it as is without being considerate even if it’s a bit much. I do hope that I can continue to see more comments about this moment in the game. By Kratos wisdom, I hope we can all just take this as a lesson, and move forward amicably.

This video and the scenes in it help contrast Kratos and Odin perfectly. Odin, whilst aware of Garm's rampage, makes it clear he's not going to intervene with his line "We're safe in Asgard", showing his utter apathy towards the suffering of others and how he passive-aggressively guilt trips Atreus, "But freeing Garm, that was a big one (mistake)". He's also likely more upset over the lack of a new mask part. Kratos, upon learning what Atreus did, rather than chew him out, immediately tells his son that they will fix it. Not just to help Atreus mend his mistake, although that is easily a big part of it considering his own past, but because he's witnessed first hand what Garm's freedom has wrought. He knows they have to stop any more damage from being done.

It’s so incredible to see how far these guys have come and just how much Atreus has grown to love Kratos. Parents for the most part have an innate love for their kids but kids don’t always have an innate love for their parents. In the first game Atreus wished that Kratos had died instead of Faye and resented Kratos for being the one that lived. Now it looks like Kratos has become Atreus’s safe place for the most part. And it’s so interesting to see Atreus trying to be this big, strong god and “champion of the giants” Loki to crying in his father’s arms. I’m not saying that as a pass on Atreus either, he knows he messed up and he knows his father will do anything to help him fix his mistakes and he’s just been through crap with Thrud being mad at him, Heimdall bullying him, Thor threatening him and Odin being mad at him but I’m really subtle, mind messing ways. And for Kratos, we saw that his biggest fear is losing Atreus and he’s said time and time again that he would do anything, including going to full scale war, to keep Atreus safe. He’s also scared of backpedaling to where they were in GOW 2018 with Atreus resenting him and turning to anyone else even Odin. I think him asking Atreus what he should call him is his way of trying to get Atreus to like and trust him again by going with Atreus’s ideas and showing Atreus accepts him. I think Atreus realizes his father is one of very few people who will always be with him on whatever he decides and will always accept him for who he is. Obviously Kratos is also very scared to lose another child especially as horrifically as he did Calliope. To me this scene perfectly captures a scared little kid running to their father looking for one of the most basic and early forms of comfort.

7:21 "What do I call you?" I love the subtle messages Kratos is communicating in this one sentence. It's an acknowledgment of Atreus' will, a yearning for him to return, the opposite of shunning him. It's a perfect response for an ashamed Atreus who wants to return.

To be fair to Atreus, Odin didn't warn him nor Thrud about Garm AT ALL. I assume it was part of his plan to delay Ragnarok. as someone else in the comment section said, it allowed Odin to ruin Atreus's trust in his friends by having the whole group, himself as Tyr included, scold him, making Odin appear as the greater source of empathy. And don't you find it strange he said that it wouldn't affect Asgard at all? He likely intended for Atreus to free Garm to delay the progress of Kratos and the others via Helheim tears everywhere in the other 8 realms. And to make it all work, he went back to his Tyr disguise and refused to help them fight off the Hel walkers, likely hoping they would lose. Little did he know Kratos and Atreus would reconnect.

I like the idea that 2 of the main reasons for Kratos defending his son in this instance: The first is obvious, Atreus took responsibility as a man instead of making excuses. The second was also a standard that Kratos set near the beginning with Lyngbakr. Atreus saw a chained up wolf that looked miserable, much like Lyngbakr, and was unaware of its nature. Kratos made great mention that he hates this sort of treatment, being a former slave himself.

You see here that even though Atreus messed up and he admits to it kratos still stands by his son and tells everyone to back off and leave him alone...it's a mistake that we'll fix...kratos may be a a tough god of war but he still has that soft side when it comes to his family and friends

this and the last hug he shares with his son always melts my heart, you can finally see Kratos begin to relax in the last one, throughout the game he's constantly on edge ready for battle but once Odin is no more, and the 8 realms are safe, you see him relax as he holds his son before his son leaves and he's just happier, he knows Atreus is ready, and now he can concentrate on being the god he's always wanted to be he maybe the god of war, but now he can do it his way
