The metaverse isn't a real thing that's been designed and set in stone, and it's not something that facebook, or any other company, created. It's a concept that originally came from a book. It pretty much just means "we will eventually have the technology to put everything that's currently on the internet into some sort of interconnected VR system, along with all sorts of stuff that we couldn't put on the internet, including locations where people can interact and anything else that can be done in VR"
