World War One was filled with drama, guts and glory. While some of the insane stories to come out of the war seem like something from a war movie, we assure these war stories are very real. In today's epic new military video we are talking a look at the attack of the "Dead Men" Russian soldiers who were gassed by the Germans, but fought the Germans back as their last heroic effort before the gas ultimately does it's job.

Not only Russians... Some of that soldiers were ethnic Poles. Osowiec Fortress is located in north-eastern Poland. Command of the famous counterattack during the battle had Włodzimierz Kotliński. Second Lieutenant Strzemiński was supposed to take command from the mortally wounded Kotliński at the crucial moment of battle. Both of them were Poles. Strzemiński survived the war and became a painter and artist in independent Poland. Commander of the fortress general Brżozowski was a tsarist officer of polish ancestry too.

Looking up other videos and doing more research on this event, the Russians at osowiec had actually delayed their orders to retreat for months. Originally, they were only supposed to hold the fort for a few days, but when they refused to break, it turned into months. They were determined to hold to the very last.

This is why, to an extent, psychological warfare is quite effective. Sometimes, it’s not how equipped your soldiers are, it’s their will to fight. I also don’t doubt that a lot of the German soldiers did think they were facing off against reanimated corpses and lost their ability to think straight. It would have been at a time where scientific fact and rationality were still becoming accepted into society so I think a lot of the men simply couldn’t understand how there were still people alive.
