The toll that being on the island had on Reiner is depressing. His double personality is just made more sad here. He wants to be a loyal follower of Marley so badly to help his family and make them proud, but he knows that the island Eldians are just normal people. The reaction that his family had when he tries to talk about the Islanders as anything other than devils, just reiterates how alone he is. This season really made me love Reiner.

i think a lot of people forget that reiner is only a few years older than our main cadet crew. so when eren, armin and mikasa were watching the armored titan break through the wall as children, they were really witnessing a 12 year old boy carrying out orders he likely didn’t understand.

I’m a racial minority, and at least here in America, the pressure to be “one of the good ones” definitely existed for me during my childhood. It’s a mindset I grew out of, but I know a lot of people who did not. So to me, the eldians hating the eldians isn’t really that far fetched; propaganda and indoctrination is a hell of a drug.

Reminds me of British Home Secretary Pritti Patel. A daughter of Indian-Ugandan refugees who fled Idi Amin's brutal regime. I just feel anguish for Reiner. He's currently the one single person in the world who has a grasp on both sides of this ridiculous conflict and there's no way out for him. Some weirs fact, comparing this episode with the manga: in the dinner scene, when Reiner starts to talk about Paradis, and he starts to talk about their past friend's, he needed to hide his mouth with his hand because he was smiling at the whole Sasha thing, and he start remembering every single recruit and remembering them with a little bit of a high tone, don't know why the director made that Reiner was serious the whole time, when in the manga is more explicit that he sure still care for them and he kinda enjoy his time with the recruit's

You can see from the look on his face he wants to save them from their future, to save them from the war that was always way bigger than they ever could have guessed. Every character is trying to protect the ones that are close to them while not having hard feelings for the others . I would just say keep an eye on Reiner and Colt reactions to Gabi and Falco ( there isn't anything special there but it just shows how human are these Characters)

For me the whole table seen from Reiner was one of the best scenes ever. In a way, Reiner’s time there was truly hell. During that time his entire world view was challenged AFTER he committed horrible crimes. He also had to make constant choices between side of his Paradis friends and his friends and family in Marley. Plus he had the responsibility of finding out a way to get home for not just him, but Annie and Bertholdt as well with being the leader of the group. It’s sad because people like Reiner needs a Uncle Iroh, but he doesn’t have one.

This eldians vs eldians thing reminds me of the separation of Germany or Korea into a soviet and a western part. I can't tell much about the Koreans, but in Germany there was a lot of anti other-german thoughts being . The soviets tried to proove the superiority of their state form by comparing "their Germany" to the one that was influenced by the USA. There was an unhealthy competition of ideologies, tying to prove themselves next to the other, both through economical and social advancement as well as military power, especially in east Germany the GDR. For a long time in the cold war, both superpowers considered taking out the heat of the looming conflict, by having a small battle within Germany fought. Like Marley mobilises eldians to fight against the "island devils". To make sure we don't become a puppet of cold war agendas, west germany asked the US to station nuclear weapons in Büchel to become an inofficial nuclear power. That way, the conflict couldn't be taken out only in Germany, making it less likely to escalate easily. Just as the rest of the world in AoT seems to be going the airplanes and nuclear bombs route, while the eldians have titans. A superweapon stalemate/ cold war seems to be coming. After the end of the cold war and the German reunion in 89 the GDR was dissolved and all the people were "reintegrated" into western Germany. The socialist indoctrination of 3 generations has left a lot of distrust in east german people. They simply didn't trust the west and now that the economy has completely changed to an open market system, many became pretty poor compared to western standards and since they couldn't compete with the western market, many companies closed, so people lost their already poorly paid jobs. Till today many older east germans say, their lives were better in the GDR. The west germans on the other hand expected every east german to be less developed ignorant burdens to the state and in the beginning also potential spys for the KGB. There were terror groups formed from the old GDR military and secret service, that tried to rebell against the new western reformation and state by attacking air planes and taking hostages. Though much of of the initial heat has cooled down over the years, both of the german formerly occupied regions still have many pejudices against the other until today, even so it has been almost half the time the separation has spanned, since the reunion happened. The indoctrinatin that happened on both sides is nothing compared to what was shown in Marley, but the general concept and idea really reminds me of it. Well many of the eldian names are german, as are the lyrics of most of the music scores, so I'm pretty sure there was some inspiration taken. But only in this final season it became apparent to me how many parallels there are. Humanizing/ dehumanizing your enemy aswell as abandoning/ regaining your own humanity seems to be one of the main themes of the show. Modern wars are a perfect playground for these thoughts. It was very unexpected for me, how much world war like this show has become, when season 4 first aired, but it damn well fits the narrative.
