I watched Attack on Titan both sub and dub as it came along these many years. One of my biggest problems with the dub has been how much they alter and change the lines, even when it comes to some of the most iconic ones in the series, which leads to inconsistency when those lines are repeated later on in the series since the dub changed them originally it erases intentional call-backs in the dialogue.

A few people have already commented this, but Eren definitely comes across more whiny in the dub than the sub. The Japanese voice actors for AoT are some of the best in the industry, and imo their performances add a lot to the show. Regardless, I look forward to following your journey through an impeccable show!

I’m pretty sure when Jean is wipeing his hand on Conny’s back, it’s because he’s wipeing off Eren’s handshake. He’s doing this because he sees Eren talking to Mikasa and is jealous/disgusted.

From the dialogues you mentioned, it seems like you might be watching the dub. I gotta say, people can watch whatever they prefer at the end of the day but if you wanna really analyse the show, understand the writing and dialogue how it was originally meant by the author, you gotta watch the sub. A lot of the things you mentioned dialogue wise is off from what was actually said and might give you the wrong idea from a lot of scenes. Not to mention the dub a lot of the times doesn't hold philosophically as well especially later on and the voice acting is just better in sub. There's literally only one dub character in the show that holds up well voice acting wise with the sub and they are not even part of the main cast. Eren and armin voice acting is miles better in sub. So i hope you consider switching if you are watching the dub.

AOT is a masterpiece. There are very little plot holes (if any), everything will be explained in time. You'll remember the characters...the writer is a master of character development, you'll remember their names eventually

I was only 15 when I started this show, back in 2013, but it's kind of crazy how much better of a grasp you have on this story than I did on a first viewing. I was fully enraptured by the spectacle of scouts fighting titans that I barely paid attention to any subtleties or the very thorough foreshadowing in the first season. I'm excited for this series! OMG you would love “AoT in 9 minutes.” Haha. The whole thing with Eren shouting so much. My intro to AoT unfortunately was watching the first season and 2nd season Dubbed English (not realizing there was a way for me to watch sub) and I really loved the story, animation, music and everything, but omg i almost quit because of Eren and Armin’s dubbed voice acting. Then i discovered the sub and suddenly they were great people in my eyes - just because Eren and Armin’s Japanese VA’s were so much better and not annoying. Yuki Kaji’s work made me appreciate Eren even if he was shout a lot haha. I love that you talked about Armin’s family, his grandpa and parents. Armin losing his grandfather, holding that straw hat - and the music- so heartbreaking. Armin is so strong for losing so many important people in his life but just keeps trekking along, hoping to see the sea one day. Good that you bring up ATLA here. There is this great KZbin essay out there, talking about how ATLA and AoT are kind of mirrors to each other. One is a show created by two white Americans that is essentially a love letter to Eastern/Asian cultures. The other show is based on a creation of a Japanese guy, and his love letter to Germanic/western ways. He was inspired by Watchman, Breaking Bad when creating this story. Btw, Hiroyuki Sawano is a genius

Exactly! Mikasa and Levi's voices were fine but Eren and Armin are just horrendous. They should've given Eren the voice of Sasuke from Naruto, rather than Ed from Fullmetal Alchemist. Would fit him far better. And Armin's voice actor should get a different job. Anyone saying it's a good dub, have not seen good dubs.

You start a great journey. Also there are 8 OVAs (special chapters) that you can watch. You can watch all after season 1 except 3 call Lost girls that you need to watch at least season 2 before.

Insert Ilse's Notebook: Memoirs of a Scout Regiment Member before Season 2 for additional World Building. It was part of Isayama's manga. In between Seasons 1 & 2 was a four year gap and the anime production released 5 additional episodes called "original video animation" (OVA) or "original animation DVD" (OAD) which were released in DVD format while Isayama finishes some more chapters and for them to produce more episodes. They include a 2-part Levi backstory. Then during Seasons 2 & 3 they released 3 additional episodes called Lost Girls. Highly recommemd the 3rd one: "Lost in the Cruel World" Not all of them have an huge impact to the main series but all of them are canon to the main series and I personally enjoyed all of the OVAs nonetheless. It's nice finding little easter eggs and callbacks to them in the main series OVA haters comment down below... 😁 👇👇👇

The scene with Jean wiping his hand on Connie's shirt is because earlier he made a truce with Eren, but then after Jean complimented Mikasa's hair Eren told her to cut her hair short. So when Jean sees him say that to her he wipes his "trust" off on Connie's shirt.

I found Eren occasionally annoying but the dubbed version makes him unbearably annoying almost all the time, and you seem as though you are watching the latter. Also, you will have some misunderstandings about certain details in the show when you watch it dubbed because, for some reason, they decided to alter the original script in weird and unnecessary ways. These are exmples from scenes you have already seen Grisha/ Erens father says Why do you want to go out there. This was in response to learning Eren wanted to become a scout. Eren replies with I want to know what the outside world is like, I do not want to live my entire life ignorantly inside the walls. Besides, if there is no one to take their place the lives of those who died outside the walls will have been lost for nothing. Here is how this scene unfolds in the dubbed version by contrast Grisha/ Erens father says its a nightmare, Eren. The outside. You really have no idea. Eren then says that he gets it and if nothing is done the nightmare will never end. Just why...these may seem like minor changes, but given how theme based the show is and how certain words and phrases are worded very deliberately, it definitely distorts the narrative. Also, Eren and Mikasa act differently in the dubbed version to the point where it is as though they are completely different characters. When these small details add up they lead to things not making much sense in certain parts of the show.

I couldn't get into the dub at all because of what feels like unnecessary yelling. l do wonder if that is a language issue though; English being a more direct language makes the yelling feel odd/over the top. The Japanese voice acting is one of the best voice acting I've ever heard imo so maybe I'm biased 😅

Did you watch english dub or sub? The dub is pretty bad for this show, especially Eren and Armin's voices don't fit their characters. If you watched dub, i'm guessing that's why you say Eren is always angry. Sure he is most of the time but the dub really leans into it. To the point it's obnoxious. His japanese voice Isn't nearly as screechy. I'd highly recommend you watch it in sub, it's an entirely different experience. There are good dubs, this just isn't one. 18:13 Jean and Eren just shook hands, then Jean finds out Mikasa is with Eren. So he wipes off his hand on Connie's back. As a way to take back the handshake with Eren. I didn't get it for a long time either, but that's all it was. Always liked Eren, never disliked him like a lot of people did when this show first came out. He's consistently been in my top 5 since the start. Putting yourself in his shoes, most people would be very frustrated too. What's interesting is even before his mom died, he still had a drive to get rid of the titans and explore what's beyond. Imagine you lived in a country where monsters outside kept you trapped your entire life. It's a bit like the story of Rapunzel, just on a different scale of course. That being said Armin was my favorite at first. 27:32 In their defence, it happens out of nowhere and by the time they'd be able to plug it. The titans would already have entered. Also how would they plug it?

The “belt” critic would have made sense if it was meant to be a high level skill but it’s pretty much entry level , at least for the 3d manuver gear. It’s impressive Eren was able to hang on as much as he did but they didn’t make him into some prodigy by doing so, the next few scenes were an analysis on how different people were able to use the gear and it makes it clear that was a gap in skill level between Eren and the top 4. I don’t really see a significance of Eren failing. Most people come out of this scene theorizing on who sabotaged the belt rather than trying to rewrite the story, you need to trust the story a bit more

I started reading this in 2010 and had been reading it until it ended in 2021. Been a good read all throughout, gets kinda edgy for me sometimes though. The first time I saw the Colossal Titan is still one of the most memorable scenes for me in the manga. I never picked up the anime for some reason, so I don't know how well they adapted it. 1. Watch all the way until there is "to be continued" screen. (sometimes they put a scene after the ending music) 2. Intro and outro music contains spoilers. So don't watch them if you want zero spoilers. 3. Definitely watch the Japanese dub with English subtitles. The English dub is inferior and so are the voice actors (except maybe the English voice actor of Erwin Smith)

really enjoyed this video and im looking forward for the next one but i have to ask are you watching the dub version ? if youre going to do an indepth analysis on this show then might as well do it on the definitive version of it which is the original japanese one with subtitles... you've played souls borne and final fantasy games so i dont think you'll have any problem with subtitles..it will save you alot of problems coming from stuffs that are "lost in translations" and you dont want those kinds of problems from this show (the show will present you with plenty of problems to begin with)

I loved Eren, cause I see myself in him. To understand Eren. Imagine he has ADHD. "When will something happen?" - Eren Jäger. He is a impulsive child with aggression problems. What can have different reasons. Even at the end of the series. I can understand him. He is a slave of his own "freedom" The helplessness and uselessness could be reasons for his aggressions problems.

It always fill my heart with joy when I see more people watching AOT, which makes me a horrible person considering how much AOT fills people with despair 😂😂😂. Also, from how much you seem to get annoyed with Eren, you MUST be watching it in English dub. Alot of the weird responses that confused you are just in the dub, and the Japanese VAs are just better. the Dub just doesn't work. Unless it REALLY bothers you to read subtitle, just rewatch the first 5 episodes in Sub and continue from there.

As someone who also just got into AOT, (I'm on ep 14) here's my first impressions on Eren, Mikasa and Armin. Idk if you're using sub or dub, I'm using sub, so idk if it just doesn't bother me as much, or if you're using dub and it's different, but I don't really notice how much Eren yells. Like yeah he can be a bit hotheaded at times, but it never really seemed over the top for me or annoying. Eren is actually my favorite character so far. Armin is ok, he's sweet and really cares about his friends. Definitely a loyal caring person, but idk I'm not too connected to him yet. As far as Mikasa, Im not a huge fan of her so far either. 😂 Again, she's fine, it's not that I don't like her, but to me she seems to have ZERO personality. She's just this girl who's somehow AMAZING as killing titans, like basically better then anyone else, but where's her personality? She just feels very bland to me.

I think she's most likely watching dub which is why "eren screaming" is more prominent for her. Eren doesn't really scream nearly as much even in the beginning of the show in the sub.

I honestly struggled a lot with liking Eren. I understood his motivation and his drive but like, why did he have to be so very loud! He was just trying to shove down his ideals and thoughts down everyone's throat. And unpopular opinion, but I didn't enjoy Mikasa's character either 😂

Yeah the dub is really not great, they kinda don't get their shit together until season 3 or maybe even the second half of season 3, either way. (Not the VAs, they're fine to great it's just that the direction they were given straight up change how the character is meant to be portrayed, and yeah sometimes it is more because they chose to translate a line, but sometimes they could've delivered the lines in a way more in line with the original characterizations even if it wasn't the same and it could have worked fine, but again that's not up to the VA, or rather, it shouldn't be in a show like attack on Titan)

Ok, your nitpicky complaint about the defective belt situation makes zero sense whatsoever and is a total contradiction in and of itself. You say you wanted Eren to fail, which he did, that you wanted to see him not be the best at this, which he wasn't, Mikasa was and you said it yourself. That you would've liked to see Eren claw his way and practice and figure it all out and push through to get better, which again, he did all of that, even asking not just Armin and Mikasa for advice but other recruits as well... Like again, wanting to see Eren fail and get good... is what actually happened. He wasn't good or naturally gifted from the start, he kept practicing and got so good in fact, that he managed to pull it off even with a defective belt... "Attack on Titan" is great, but the sequel series are kind of bad, so you can feel fine stopping here without watching "Attack on Ganymede" and "Attack on Io." "Attack on Callisto" is straight trash, definitely skip that one.
