For the people that wanted the old system fix : the problem was that he had a windows 10 usb instalation stick in for UEFI bios !!! The old system needs LEGACY !
@wboyd33

Actually you can use a UEFI loaded USB drive on a non-UEFI BIOS & load a non-Secure Boot load of Windows 10 to an older computer. During the setup...Instead of it creating the 4 partition tables (for the UEFI/Secure Boot setup on newer computers) at the creating partitions part, the USB installer will only create the 2 patitions it needs to load an O.S. Just an F.Y.I. incase you wanted to know

The only point I would make is that he had both a DVD & blu-ray drive, and now he has neither. And for those who would respond to that, "But people don't use DVDs/Blu-rays these days", his father in law clearly does.

Agreed, he could have included one Blu-Ray burner just in case it's ever needed, People like Paul, and other tubers who do this all the time sometimes forget the needs/wants of the average computer user, plus he said his father in law is going to another country, so what if the internet is poor where he's going, then he might want to buy some movies on DVD/Blu-Ray to watch on his PC.

I thought the same thing. Many of us don't use optical drives, but my dad sure as hell does. And if I built him a new PC, he would be disappointed if it didn't have one. I suppose he could use an external drive, but still. If nothing else, he could have just built the new PC, in the old case.

nappydrew I have an external USB blu-Ray drive I rarely use, but I still build my personally rigs with at least one DVD-RW drive because I salvage a lot of older hardware, and like Retro PC gaming, and some of those systems won't boot off USB, so you need to burn CD's, and DVD's to instal an OS, or another example is last night was my sister's wedding, and I took a crap ton of photos for her, and archive them for her after going through, and touching them up a bit, burning them onto a DVD-R which will last much much longer then throwing it on a USB thumb drive which could become corrupted over time. So again drives like these still have a use case for a lot of people, and it's sad that people like Paul forget that.

You are not the only one. My biggest problem is time, and energy, because by the time I get home from work after doing my workout at the gym my work has in the building, dealing with family crap, dinner, spending time with my girlfriend, watching wrestling some nights, etc... it's way too late, I have to get up for work the next day(not counting weekends/holidays), and I'm usually just too damn tired. Having said that I'm currently saving for new GPU, and SSD, while in the middle of finishing the rebuild of a Dell Dimension 4600 P4 system in a new case with a new old stock ULTRA module 500 Watt PSU with an IDE DVD burner, 3.5in floppy drive, and dual boot Windows 98SE/XP SP3 build with each OS getting its own 120GB WD SATA HDD for running all my retro PC games. So hopefully I'll get some lazy Sunday afternoons to use the dang thing lol!

Paul, please listen to your fans here. Sure, new hardware is exciting and you need to show off your sponsored goods, but come on! You could have troubleshooted the error with a different board if needed, just to show what the fix was. Many viewers can't go buy a new computer. Others can, and they don't need you to show them how. Who is supposed to like you *not* showing the interesting parts? Suppose the board was the problem. Now you can plop in a Xeon X5450, max out the memory, throw in a 1030 or any last gen card. And you know what? If that's still too slow or breaks down a month later *then* you can go and build a new box. Don't lose contact with your viewer's reality here. We try to fix, then to upgrade, and only if that fails we replace. Because we pay for every part.

Agreed. I'm still running on a 10 year old computer. It was slowing down in games so I eBay-ed some more RAM and fixed that issue. The problem is that the parts in that computer are too old. The processor and ram are too old and slow, so is the videocard. The igpu in that i3 is pretty much just as fast if not more then that old 3870, which is probably not even dx11. I too am all pro fix things that still may work, but if fixing that leaves you with an old, slow system, that still may die again when another component fails, i think is better just to update the core and move on. Tho i would have ask the owner if he likes his old case... because Paul's father in law may not like the new case, or just be very attached to the old one, in which case mounting the new hardware in that old case may have been much better (if it made the owner happier to keep the look of his computer)

Britec09 I agree. If he wants to give his Father In Law a newer computer fine. I have no problem with that. But take some time and determine what is causing the problem as well. My bet is the graphics card or the POC Patriot SSD. I know it's old, but it is perfect;y serviceable. While I seriously doubt that he has a motherboard or cpu to swap out, he definitely has ram, ssds, and graphics cards that he could have tried. And I never saw him do a BIOS clear either. Those old NForce boards were notorious for needing that even when the board would post. I really expected more from Paul on this.

Ross Moutell As someone else stated, it can be done, but who says he needed to use Windows anyways, seems to me his father in law could benefit from moving away from Windows with an OS like Ubuntu, Linux Mint XFCE, or CloudReady OS Home Edition(open source Chrome OS). moving my family who are not gamers, or heavy power users over to Chrome OS has been the best thing, as I get far far fewer tech calls now.

Paul as an ex-PC repair tech, this is some pretty bad work. With software issues, you always ALWAYS need to talk to the person about their data. Reinstalling windows is the easy solution and sometimes the best, but you NEVER KNOW what the person wants with their data. Ive had customers who absolutely refused to reinstall windows or upgrade, because they have discontinued legacy application that no longer has available installers available anywhere, and you cant just copy and paste application installs. The person also loses all their settings, and configurations. You can painfully recreate it, export bookmarks, hunt for config files, etc, but its never the same.

If he put the SSD in a working system, you can put an empty HDD or SSD into the same machine and create a clone of the old SSD, works perfectly, it's how I got windows 10 onto my SSD after upgrading from a HDD, just cloned it and booted from the SSD, had all my files and software on the SSD as well as windows 10, so if cloning the drive is an option before completely reinstalling windows on the old drive I'd recommend that, however if the old SSD is corrupt, and files are unreadable hence the crashing on boot then obviously it won't be able to create the clone SSD or HDD

I'm also sick of KZbinrs like Paul defaulting to lets just build a new system, and install windows 10 on it, instead of what can we do to fix this system as it is, and what are the end users real needs, and see if they don't need Windows. I've rehabbed a few older systems over the past couple years for people, and myself who just need basic computers to do web surfing, office documents, etc.. who are not PC gamers with CloudReady Home Edition(open source Chrome OS found on Google Chrome devices), and 90% of the time unless they have some crazy hardware setup it just works even on 2GB of RAM with the 32bit version. In fact my current work computer is a 10+ year old AMD Athlon II X3 with with 8GB DDR2 RAM, a 2Gb AMD R7 240 GPU, and a 250GB Segate HDD for the main drive on Cloudready Home edition 64bit, and it handles everything i need on a daily bases with ease, and even have the 32bit version running on my old ACER Aspire ZG5(a bit slow, but it actually made it a somewhat useful backup machine again) with only 1.5GB of RAM.

He made no attempt to even try to troubleshoot. It was most likely just a case of a bad stick of RAM, spending 5 seconds to swap it out would have saved him the hour and a half to build a new system that's probably wasted anyway.
@Catsrules1
@Catsrules1 6 жыл бұрын
The way the system was acting it is very likely a hardware problem, so installing a different OS wouldn't have helped. Yes I have complete confidence Paul could repair the computer, but at what cost? The computer is only worth $50 at most. Is it really worth time and effort and risk of trying to source old working components to fix it? Even it you could get it repaired for under $50 how long are we really expecting a 10 year old computer to last? Honestly at 10 year old it is time to let the poor computer die. And just spend the extra $100-200 on a newer computer. And tell your work to buy you a new computer. Your on borrowed time on that computer it is going to die, and when it does your work will probably loose more money with you being unable to do your job then it would if they just bought you a new computer in the first place. There is a reason why a lot of businesses have an have an end of life policy on computers. Computers are cheep being unable to do business because of an outage is expensive.
@GrandPrix46
@GrandPrix46 6 жыл бұрын
The "time and effort" you speak of is creating a video he gets PAID for when people watch, it's content. I could care less about him building a new PC as a replacement, just troubleshoot the old one so we know what the fuck was wrong with it first. That's all anybody is asking for, not for him to fix it and make the old man keep using it forever.
@marklinton4567
@marklinton4567 6 жыл бұрын
What does ANY of what you said have to do with the topic being discussed? Did you even watch the video yet? The PC belongs to his father-in-law who is clearly not a PC guy. The title of the video is "Attempting repairs on a 10-year old PC". I'm saying repairs weren't really attempted. The "worth your time" argument is pointless in this context as Paul is getting a return on time invested by people watching the video. Back to the father in law. Just up and changing everything and then throwing a whole new OS onto the system can be very jarring for non-pc guys. If he was using Outlook Express then his email client changed. If he used IE, he might not like edge etc etc.

Dude. For next time. 1 - If you're not sure about drives, just check the SMART data. PartedMagic is nice for this one since it doesn't matter if you can boot Windows or not. There are also many other helpful tools, love it. I'm pretty sure that the old hard drive has bad SMART data. I'd always check SMART data from PCs like this. 2 - If you can't boot a Windows 10 installer, try the following: - On old PCs, make sure that the USB installer is formatted with NTFS and that it's using MBR. - If a 'legacy' USB installer doesn't work, try to burn the ISO and boot from DVD - that often works. 3 - If you want to recover data from a drive, that probably has viruses on it, don't use Windows for it. Use PartedMagic or any other live Linux distro - I personally use Linux Mint for this (have it on a USB drive anyway, lovely distro). You never know what's on there, nor what could be on your notebook now.

Never seen such cases. My case for most the 90ies was a beige box. In the later 90ies it got fancier, with basically the same box, but in black. Then had to paint all my external drives because black CD Rom drives weren't really a thing yet. They did except, but wasn't able to find any at the local stores. I actually miss the times. Going to the stores every week and getting those sheets with the daily stock/prices from each store, comparing and deciding whether it was a good time to buy something right now or not.

To be fair, for ages now that has been how you fix a computer. What it basically breaks down to is: 1)"Troubleshoot the Idiot": a hyperbolic joking way of saying "asses the skill and knowledge of the user and see if possibly they are the failure point" 2)Troubleshoot the Trouble: Is it a common easily recongnizable issue that you have seen before and know how to fix easily, then fix it. If not keep going down the list. 3)Back up the data 4)Rebuild the OS and Software. If that didn't work keep going. 5)Process of Elimination: Figure out what in the system still works. Try some quick solutions to the problems and if they don't work replace the parts. If time is an issue just replace the computer or as much of it as is possible without screwing over the user. So allot of the time us technicians call replacing the computer repairing it unless you just sell them a whole brand new system and don't salvage anything.

To be far the title did say Attempting to repair. Also I agree with Paul on this when you have a computer that old, it is not worth repairing anymore. That computer was maybe worth $30-50 total, The way it acting getting stuck on the windows screen, it is very very very likely it was a hardware problem. Your going to be spending very close to to what the computer was worth on replacement parts. Not to mention your time and effort trying to figure out what part is causing the problem. The computer was basically totaled. Your better off just buying another old computer for $50 and Frankensteining it together. But again your on borrowed time using computers that old, not to mention having to use old and slow hardware. Honestly I searched ebay for used computer, first item that that came up was an HP workstation for $225 i5-4570 16GB of ram and a 256GB SSD. That is a computer that will be a far far far superior experience then a Core 2 Duo.

I want both, good airflow with decent fan placement *and* space to actually store stuff. There is much room between the PSU and the front cover, enough for a bunch of disks. And the topmost part of the front is too high for good airflow anyway. In-between could fit a long card. One of the cases on my shortlist is the Define R5, got the right combination of both.

There is so much to be done to get it back up and running. It may be LGA 775 but there is still some life to be had in that system. First thing I would do to troubleshoot a Windows install is to make sure the USB stick is using a legacy type format only just to be sure that the UEFI format isn't causing any problems. If there is no hope in a USB install working, there is always a good chance that an optical install could work, like DVD or Blu-Ray. It has sure saved my ass many times in the past dealing with LGA 775 systems not installing Windows of any kind on USB. Second, I would take off the 212 and replace the dual core with around a i2 Q6600 or a quad core around those lines, it's only around a $10-$15 upgrade that sure makes a difference, and replace the thermal paste while you are at it. Third thing I would do is give it a new SSD or Hard Drive, if there is a hard drive or SSD over 4 or 5 years old in the system, I replace it no matter what. I've always had bad luck with older drives. The last thing I would do is really just give everything the best clean you can give it. There are some cases where I have motherboard that had usb ports that were really flakey and once I gave them and the motherboard a good clean, I worked the second time no problem. If I was there working on that system, I would dedicate about a day or so exhausting all my options to get it to work. These 775 systems may be old, but they are still great systems on a budget or just as a spare PC.

When my grandpa was still around, when I got his computer going, I made an image file of the whole setup on day 1, on a separate drive. A few months later he'd call to say his computer is all messed up. I'd had gotten tired of trying to chase the Hydra programs. He would pick up things that had programs watching for other programs quitting or being shut down, to make sure they would be restarted, etc. So rather than try and fight and figure out what he had picked up, I'd back up any new data he had made, and do a restore with Acronis True image. Half hour later, he was ready for more porn viewing, writing down his thoughts, etc. 30 minutes instead of 8+hours. Sometimes you just have to restart fresh, and new.

it is actually quite easy to run win 10 on older motherboard. These older boards require MBR disks to install, and to boot to a disk, and newer versions of windows use only GBT style disks. so that means that it won’t run, so you get a version of windows from 15000 or below and your set. then use iso to usb and select “bootable disk” and run it. after that you go into the bios and make sure under “usb” that it is enabled and set to bootable, your set. go into the select boot drive and select the drive, and you should be set.

I always run a surface test on the HDD/SSD and MemTest before even trying to load into windows. An easy way to find out if it's a failing hardware in a "will not turn on" computer. Next, if the hardware test pass, I run an anti-virus scan from a different drive (mainly windows PE on a USB from Sergei Strelec) to find out if there is a virus/bloatware preventing windows from starting, and also check the battery status if it's a laptop. If that passes then I try to load into windows on the main drive and check for bloatware again, corrupted user account, multiple anti-virus programs (you only need 1 not 7), check to startup with autoruns for anything programs that are timing out when the Windows is loading. There are some other little things I do, but this should take about 4-5 hours in an 8GB DDR3, 1TB HDD computer and 90% of that time you're waiting on the hard drive tests to finish if you test the RAM in another computer, 7~ hours if you don't use another computer. I use these steps with about 12~ computers per day at work.

Paul I ran into a similar issue with my son's (hand me down) Asus P5Q Pro motherboard. His machine would just randomly shut off with no warning so I figured it was possibly processor heat, a power delivery issue or the RAM was bad. No new parts had been added to cause a hardware issue. I was able to salvage mine by changing out a few parts. I replaced the power supply and the RAM and I reapplied the thermal paste on the air cooler. I also pulled the motherboard battery temporarily to reset the BIOS and then I went into the bios and made sure it was set to default settings. I don't know which part made it work again because I did this all at one time but I am still using it two years later as a camera server with Windows 10 Pro and I have our backup drive attached to it also. If you want to send it my way, I will see if I can get it going. I have spare RAM, a power supply and plenty of old HDDs I could use to attempt to resurrect it.

With the power supply, you're definitely showing why I also say to not scrimp on the power supply. I rebuilt my old Gaming machine which is an AMD Athlon II X3 435 CPU with 8GB of DDR2 RAM, a 450 Watt PSU, a cheap 2GB AMD R7 240 GPU, a spare 250GB Segate HDD I had in the parts bin, and a $20 Apex Supercase I had from my old HTPC build that gave up the ghost, and I put Neverware's Cloudready Home Edtion 64bit(free opensource Chromium OS)on it as the OS, and running dual monitors it's my main computer at my work(using it now), and it powers through office work with Google docs, watching videos, and downloading files from torrents like a champ, and most of the time I'm barely even using 1/2 the system resources. I'm honestly sick of KZbinrs defaulting to lets just build a new system, and throw Windows 10 on it, when the end user they are doing the system for does not even need it, and they could avoid a lot of their problems by moving the user away from Windows altogether.

Saddens me to see a repair that turns out to be a new build. I just refreshed my old [and first] computer, a Lenovo k300, from a 775 socket e8400 core two to now a nice matx msi board with an I5 and 16 gb ram and 500 gb Samsung ssd along with a 1060 6gb evga gpu and it is sweet. Not a gaming rig, but just a solid workhorse. Still looks like the day I bought it. I will never be sorry

that IMO is a poor attempt to troubleshoot the boot up issue i wonder if he even tried Safe mode to try to see if any conflicting software issues prob a corrupted registry or boot up files stopping it from booting, virus prob ate up the system files too. that can be easily done with CMD and recopy the boot up files from the Windows disc. also like many mentioned it might also be the faulty SSD or SSD cable or SATA port I encounter the same issue with my SATA controller on my mobo and because it was a old unit. I just have to junk it SSD and SATA cable will be easy to replace.

I always try unplugging all the drives and use a Linux USB to boot Xubuntu or Mint. That way I know if it's a windows or drive problem. I also would have blasted that thing with the air compressor, the dust was pretty crazy but probably average for a 10 yr old computer. I might have tried to kick it old school and boot off a CD as well if the USB gave me issues. Refurbishing old tech and keeping it alive/out of a landfill makes me happier than it really should.

I know this sounds silly (even though I'm not making any sounds lol) but I would have tried using a CD ROM Windows Disk since that platform is of the time of CD ROM and might be more compatible. Weird querkie stuff happens all the time.

I like to always like to connect a possibly infected hard drive to an sacrificial computer not connected to the network. In case whatever is on there doesn't infect my main system or able to jump over the network to another system. Though probably not needed in your case Paul, it is a good practice to prevent further infection

So funny, I just did the same thing last week with my buddys old gaming PC! Started originally with him wanting to buy my 1070, ended up building him a whole new budget system. Ryzen 3 1300X - $100 B350M - * GTX 1070 - $300* 8GB DDR4 3000 - $75 Hyper 212 - * Cheapo $50 Amazon cube case - * 128GB SSD - * (*Bundled together from my old parts) All-in, he's under $500 invested and that thing is a beast for the price!

I personally would have replaced the HDD as well -- after 10 years, even a great one like that WD is probably getting close to death. I do have some ancient 20GB WD HDDs that still work, but I wouldn't trust them as primary storage anymore -- gotta keep important stuff on newer drives to reduce likelihood of failure. You should put a new system in the Apollo case! Maybe paint the interior and make it all flashy
