As a boy starting out in the 1950s, I'd go up and down the roads in our rural area gathering coke bottles from the roadside for the deposits of 3 cents each. Once enough money was in hand, I'd go with my dad to the feed store to buy cedar arrows paying $1 for five. In the late 50's that was a lot for a kid. And when one of those thin crimped on points was lost, I'd glue 38spl casings on the end for blunts. As a teenager, I was dowling out my own shafts. Separating by weight and spine. Forged my own points from thin iron strips. And fletched from turkey feathers from a nearby farm that processed them. I learned how to be independent from store bought arrows. And when I'd damage an arrow from too tight a group, the repair followed. Thus when I see you damage an arrow, I cringe a bit knowing what will follow. I can surely understand the sacrifice of your arrows in the production of your videos. 😏

I remember when i was at school we went to sherwood forrest as a part of a history lesson about him. And learned about Little John who would do friendly contest with him. In our British museum we have old transcripts that mention where he was born, and when 1160, and that he took part in Thomas of Lancaster rebellion in 1332. And according to legend fought in the crusades. Theres still a statue of him in Lancaster i believe. And its written in scriptures of how talented he was at archery and with the sword. Ps im so glad youve kept up with the NPC theme because no one else ive seen does these types of content, sure alot do historic archery and some in a fun way, but the little arguments and taunts between you and Sir Gains is just an excellent twist on your channel. Also not alot of these archery history guys actually shoot over 60lb bows, so in that respect your channel is not only very informative but shows accuracy in the tools you use.

Robin Hood was my exposure to archery. I was really young but I wanted to be like that character, fighting corruption and helping people. Sadly, my health problems meant that I was unable to really pick up archery till I was adult. Watching you split that rod reminded me of throwing tomahawks with my dad when I was younger. We used to throw closest to center to see who got to throw first, and then take turns on 5 playing cards at about 10 yards. We both aimed for handles though since if you can't throw it you can't win lol. I got really good at splitting the handles down so my dad got splinters throwing and used to think it was so funny. We talked about it a week or so ago and both still have fond memories of it over 20 years later.

Yeah. He was something special, just like a genetic outlier where I’ve seen videos of him just hitting quarters out of the air. It’s truly another level so it’s definitely less about being able to do it and more about the reaction of the arrow once it hit.

Shooting a willow wand or 2x4 at 50 or 100 paces would be hard enough. You need to be a pretty good archer to regularly hit that. If you could regularly hit it, splitting the wand or 2x4 wouldn't be too hard given what an arrowhead would do to the wood. Now splitting an arrow (like in the movies) would be nearly impossible given the natural variations, flexing of the shaft when hit and weekness in the wooden shafts. Especially if the nock has horn or plastic reinforcement. I've seen modern arrows get hit dead on in the nock and mostly it just deflects the arrow and breaks the nock. That was some very good shooting on your part. P.S. Gest (Pronounced like Jest) 1. a tale of adventures; especially : a romance in verse. 2. adventure, exploit; knightly gests. So the early gests of Robin Hood would just have been the early tales about him.
@dashrendar5320
@dashrendar5320 14 күн бұрын
Haha thank you. Apologies for my mispronunciation, also fully agree if the nock is reinforced it’s gonna redirect. Even if not it’s gonna follow the grain of the wood and cut in but deflect off. Straight down the middle is not something I see as feasible

I’m down about 15 pounds, have better health, probably a longer life expectancy and I get through the demands of a day easier because Sir Gains showed me that exercise doesn’t have to be some crazy science with all the pills and powders and splits and shocking the muscle, etc etc. I can do simple moves with heavy weights and get great results. I was coaching archery last weekend and the splitting of the arrow topic came up then. I explained that it would have been a wand rather than arrow. as a side comment. When I started shooting traditional bows with wooden arrows, my old coach and I would set up the shaft of an old wooden arrow vertically and try to hit it with our longbows or flatbows form about 15 - 20 yards. The winner would have bragging rights and the loser would make the drinks and bring cakes for next session .

Oh man, it very so much depending. You sound like you’re large and strong. But it varies so much for the person if you haven’t trained with it before I use a few different kinds, the heaviest being 165 pounds at the moment but what I would suggest is if there’s an archery shop near you go in and just simply try some recurve bows, they usually let you test them out. You can kind of see what the max you’re looking at is. Most of them don’t have over 50 pounds but it would be good just to at least see

I didn't split an arrow, but close enough. I was shooting at 18 meter target, and one time I was on target but the arrow hit but fall to the ground, I was like "what the hell?". Think nothing of it until I went to shoot my 3 arrows again and one of them, the nock would not keep engaged to the string. Looking closer, the arrow that had fell to the ground had hit the nock of my other arrow and damaged it. I replaced it and I still have that nock to this day (it was in 2016) 😁

I have split a few arrows and you can’t do it if you stick the arrow in the target by hand. You must shoot the arrow into the target then shoot another arrow to split the arrow in the target. The arrows don’t hit straight so they must be shot from the same spot to be split by a following arrow. Just shoot a dozen arrows at the bullseye and you will likely split one of them.

Great vid man. I enjoy the skill of accuracy with a war bow. Just curious, have you considered getting a warbow from thr other side of the world? You can get a 100lbs+ turkish war bow from Metbow for pretty cheap. Or a manchu from alibow would likely be more your size. But a 125lb Turkish would make a great rangers bow at only 48'' knock to knock with a 30'' draw. Or maybe a 100lb Comanche/apache short draw would be a fun ranger bow too, the smaller arrows carry better.. Drizzt uses a Comanche/apache bow because the bow fits in a arrow quiver. Come to think of it so does Aragon.. You gotta read IceWind Dale trilogy man. Your nerd side will never regret it.

@@dashrendar5320 i saw that vid with the recurve. Was a good vid. I only recommend the others for a single point difference. The eastern bows have a unbending section of limb at last 9 inches to the knock. The lever acts like a compound and changes the characteristics of the draw and arrow speed. The turkish also because the size, I rather enjoy placing 5 targets around and run through some trees and make a course of it. The small size bow is much more agile and quick to maneuver, and still comes in 100+ lbs. I said manchu because that bow is legendary for massive poundage and massive arrows! Like 2000g 38'' arrows on a 36'' draw! They both act very differently them a recurve. The draw the feel, a recurve just isn't even close. Then with the skill khatra you can completely negate the archers paradox and get faster arrow speeds with a perfect arrow flight. Most western archers don't even know these things exist. But ya fundamentally and characteristicaly different from a recurve in both draw and release. And honed with khatra. Also thumb draw gets you +2" on ur draw length. And the Comanche just because, eh nerd stuff. It fits in a quiver. Both rangers i like use one.. but i like my 30'' draw so if I'm jumping through a portal my ranger bow is a turkish short bow all day. Love the content man. Keep it up. Read IceWind Dale for Drizzt. His best friend is a 900lb mystical black panther he can summon at will!
