Glad you're trying this Jay, it's been on my todo list for a long time but I haven't gotten to it. Looking forward to the results!

Hey Jay ... You're a real go getter. Always trying something new. That's good. I appreciate your enthusiasm and these videos. I've been wondering about the MF content (or lack thereof) of the compost also. My question has always been that if MF requires a living root, and there are no living roots in the compost, then how in the heck do we get any in there? Hence your experiment. This should be interesting. FYI ... I reached out to Dr. David Johnson not long ago with that very question, and he was gracious enough to send this reply. Here's a copy of our exchange: I'm pretty sure They won't mind. ************************************************************************************* Me: Dr. Johnson … Thanks so much for sharing all of your information. I really appreciate it, but have a question: If mycorrhizal fungi need a living root to survive, where in the world do they come from to be in the final product? Dr. David Johnson: "You have the same question as many. We thought that we should share this email reply we just sent to another farmer with you. The Johnson/Su Compost should not have much if any mycorrhizal fungi. We may pick up one hit out of 3.5 million species identifications in a shotgun metagenomic analysis. In that case, most likely a spore drifted in from the atmosphere as these organisms are everywhere. "The term mycorrhiza refers to the role of the fungus in the plant's rhizosphere, in collaboration with the root system. Mycorrhizae play important roles in plant nutrition, soil biology, and soil chemistry." "In a mycorrhizal association, the fungus colonizes the host plant's root tissues, either intracellularly as in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF or AM), or extracellularly as in ectomycorrhizal fungi." "A mycorrhiza is a symbiotic association between a green plant and a fungus." It appears to be a common misconception to think that one needs to have Mycorrhizal fungi in the compost. Most people have been using inferior compost (mostly mulch) and are accustomed to adding all sorts of amendments because they lack a diverse microbial community. When you have good quality compost, it brings the right biology to the soil to enhance plant growth...living plants with living roots with a living soil microbiome. Twenty-three species of mycorrhizal fungi showed up in the soil in our test plots on desert soil in New Mexico after inoculating with Johnson/Su Compost and growing cover crops. Most likely a fully functioning soil microbiome fulfills the collaborative requirements for mycorrhizal fungi to thrive. Hope this helps! " Best, David and Hui-Chun Su Johnson *********************************************************************************** Keep up the good work, Jay. Ken😊

Sounds interesting. In order to extract the mycorrihza won't you have to put roots, plants and all into the extractor? Guess you could take the top 6 inches at a time and replant if you had a couple weeks in between....

Hi Jay, been following your great videos from Netherlands, great content. Q: maybe have your reactors outside so you get some sunlight? Other idea is use Urine as fertilizer; 1 gallon of Urine on 10 gallons of rainwater and maybe add some seasalt to it. Try 1 bioreactor so you can compare. All the best! H

When you say those two composts are your best how do you determine? Are you microscoping it? If yes, way more fungi and protozoa than the other ones? Thank you for experimenting!

@@youngredangus6041 oh, okay. Maybe you can microscope them and make a comparison video? Would be awesome, because you have so many different composts with different ingredients

Can't elevated ag fungi be used directly as a seed innoculant? Skip the J/S reactor and extraction? Is J/S a cheaper method to multiply fungi?
@bobthrasher8226
@bobthrasher8226 Жыл бұрын
What if you mix seed/innoculant into the J/S bulk material. Seed will sprout and provide temporary substrate for the fungi...

Have you thought of putting some dry humates in your compost? This is a good carbon source to help feed the biology and hold more water. Blessings

I have red in a scientific literature I think - that some saprophytic fungi do love to also eat on mycorrhizal fungi. But right now I would have to search and read again to find this article in the web. But normally this is of course a great idea only that this could potentially be a big downside to this experiment.

According to Elaine Ingham, some Trichoderma species will 'attack' AMF. I'm also very interested in your experiment because I understood that the host plants had to be in a slightly 'starved' environment to 'trigger' AMF sporulation and the bioreactor might be too 'rich' for the seeds to signal for AMF. So if it works that would be fantastic!! @@youngredangus6041
