Well there's an idea I've never thought of... haha. I think the biggest problem might have been that you dispensed the water onto the roof tiles which are very uneven. If you dispensed the water onto a steel sheet with little 'teeth' at the bottom, I think this might have worked pretty well.

Hey, it worked well enough. If you had more freezing nights I bet you'd get er all dialed in. Frankly I am surprised that the concept worked out as well as it did. I wouldn't have expected that it is possible to control icicle growth without getting completely wiped out by random variables creating too much noise in the system. Very impressive work. Thanks for sharing!

Ive got a plasma cutable carriage design that uses regular bearings and rides on tubing. Its solid and i use it for the cnc plasma i built at work. Its just a plasma cut piece with a couple of folds (i did mine by scoring with a the plasma part way through the material, then applied a hammer) so its pretty quick and easy to make. Give a yell if you want and i can share the files with you.

What a cool idea, and not at all a failure. You need to revisit this next winter; this time get started testing as soon as it's cold enough and use every opportunity for tuning - your setup seems to work pretty good, you just need more time tuning the values. Things to consider would be what temperature the water actually comes out of the nozzle, an idea for that would be to leave the heating mantle on completely on the hose but attach it to an arduino, insert a thermocouple at the end of your hose (just were the heating element still reaches - you want the thermocouple to see what temp the heating element gets the water to), and let the arduino keep the water just above freezing - hot water might even be better because it actually freezes faster than cold water. Furthermore to consider, at what rate the water can actually freeze on the icicle - if you add water faster than it can freeze, of course your lengths have to be off. So another idea would be to significantly reduce your flow rate on the water additions, because looking at your clip it looks like *way* too much at once. I suspect that fast drips would work way better, but once again, thats something in need of testing. Would be excited to see you getting this to work properly!

Mmmm, got to say that "linear rail" is a beauty and could have many uses. What are the V groove bearings you used? On thinking about it the drive belt could be attached to the internal of the "rail" to the "carriage", protecting the belt from whatever.

I wonder. How much ice one might need to make to reduce their summer AC bills in half. I can hear a bunch of "it depends on....." but it sounds like a site engineering challenge. I'm thinking start with a buried water container and heat pipes to pull heat out during winter. The requirements are probably way too much to be practical is probably an understatement for most places but further north one lives, maybe there's a case where it is practical. Incedently, it's amazing that heat pipes are used along Alaskan oil lines to create perma frost, permenatly frozen soil, to suport the pipeline support structures.

Icicles form when snow or ice on your roof barely melt from the sun or heat leaking through your roof. Then it drips in the shade and it freezes. The water is BARELY above the freezing point and maximally viscous - syrupy. Your water will be a lot warmer and freeze slower and be a lot thinner. I think that's why your icicles are so skinny. I think you should remove all guard heat and instead try to cool the water without it freezing. If the water keeps flowing at a very low rate I think that will be enough to prevent freezing. You could incorporate a compressed air blowout for when you want to shut down.

Man I think about doing unique things to my gutters all the time. Like Simone Giertz I wonder why everything has to be so boring. My thought - I think your flow rate was too high to start and that contributed to the wonkiness. As the icicles grow they can accept higher flow rates because of greater surface area and mass. Adding some kind of bolt or spine for the icicle to start on might help. Airflow is also a factor to consider. Something ducted like a Dyson air blade to force air along the dripping plane would be really cool but the size and complexity now seem to be getting out of hand in my mind.

I know this using a rack and pinion would be more complicated and less efficient but you should totally make a rack bot just for the youtube click bait of showing off the robot with the best rack on youtube. I've never seen a rack making robot on youtube and it'd be funny and mildly useful for heavier duty projects that you do. Probably be simple to pass a couple angle grinders and a tig welder back and forth across the square stock to build up and shape a tooth profile and profit.
