Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a controversial diagnosis, with some arguing that it is overdiagnosed (especially in children) and others saying that it is actually under-recognized. To make sense of this, let’s look at ADHD in more detail, including both the benefits and downsides of diagnosing this disorder.
Learn more about ADHD, including its diagnostic criteria in this high-yield talk intended for all healthcare providers, including doctors, medical students, psychologists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, and more!

I had ALL the classic ADHD symptoms, literally every single one you listed in the video, combined subtype even! But somehow my parents and doctors as a kid thought it was “high functioning autism” presumably ONLY because I had a fixation on my favorite topics and I didn’t get the proper medication or diagnosis until I was 17. :(

It might be because you had average or above average intelligence and the doctors thought you're "too smart" to have ADHD. I think people whose symptoms impact their academic results "enough" get diagnosed more easily and people who do ok or well academically often fall through the cracks.

@@essennagerry yep this is the answer because i was also “gifted” lol. i didn’t have any academic issues until college, in elementary/middle/high school it was easier to get away with forgetting to do assignments and turning them in late

yeah they are very often miss diagnosed due to the overlapping in the criterias, may i ask how long ago you got the ASD diagnose? and what country you are from? That might explain why the doctors did what they did

Overdiagnosis doesn't have to have these negative effects. I was told I had ADHD but as a girl in the early 2000s I wouldn't get a diagnosis. I just had a guidance counselor who recognized it and the lack of criteria for girls at the time. She gave me education and tools, I wasn't medicated or told I couldn't do things because of my ADHD. Largely thanks to her, I managed to go through my education and even a PhD, just with education and constantly learning how to cope. I ended up with a burnout and lasting depressive symptoms before I finally got my diagnosis. I probably should have gotten my diagnosis and medication a lot earlier. But it shows how much you can help a kid just with the right education!

Hyperactivity can be expressed cognitively instead of physically, resulting in inattention and distractibility. Love your channel, thank you for your time and effort!

I have add pretty bad. As a kid I did terrible in school probably because I had a stressful childhood and these days I ALWAYS forget things, even when I'm talking about a particular thing to someone I'll forget what it is I was talking about before I get to the point. And I always forget where I put things, and my mind trails off CONSTANTLY. I'm 35 now, never been diagnosed or treated and it just seems to get worse the older I get.

i got this diagnosis so often... in elementary school, later again and again, last time in the psychiatry a few years ago. but, not once, does anyone in the healthcare system care about how to really help someone with adhd. to be honest, from my point of view, it never really matters, regardless of the psychological disorder. all they care about is, getting you back to school or work as fast as possible. and then, you try 5 different medications, get your shit together for a few years, and then, struggle again until you burn out. my parents fixated on me having a "high IQ" on a test - whatever that even means at the end of the day. even if you COULD say, that you are "smarter", how does it help if you need more brain power to compensate for your shortcomings? so, while everyone else succeeds at everything, although in varying degrees, in the end i might have excel at one thing, but failed at EVERYTHING else. but yay, i guess, at least my parents had a reason to scold me for everything now, since i am "smart" and just "dont want to" concentrate or do stuff right. for me, the only way to kinda fit in with all those dumb rules society thinks are neccessary, was to get off antidepressants, once i became depressed. having your brain slowed down, not caring about anything, having no energy. thats was, for me anyway, the ticket to being one of them. but, by doing that for to long, at least i burned out. i am so, so happy that some of us are able to actually get "better" with medication and behavioural training. but i still kinda wish that our society would stop with that superficial "tolerance" towards metal disorders/disabilities. yeah, we are "sooooo" included, as long as we behave and work like every other cog in the machine. but tolerance usually ends once we get slightly annoying, or less productive. we basically just have to take those medications or do behavioural therapy to not be too big of an inconvinience to society. but at least from my own expirience and some conversations i had with fellow adhd friends, not one of these things are there to help us have a calm mind.

I've had ADHD my whole life. The sheer lack of information on it still to this day is alarming. Seems the cookie cutter answer is drugs.

True you’d think they know more by now considering it’s been in the DSM for many years already.

@@SDS-ee9js I personally believe the reason is it isn't profitable enough. They already rake in the bucks from the drugs so why bother

As a person with multiple diagnosis.. now being 40 I think at least in my case, I have an overwhelming feeling that modern scosital construct is divergent from natural evolution. Meaning modern ways of living and expectations are at odds of natural ways of living and development of ancestry

I'm 40 and was diagnosed with combination type ADHD last year. I'm still so confused and trying to understand my issues. I am medicated on 100mg of Strattera. It helps but I'm still trying to grasp and understand this condition.

I'm a 37 year old man who finally got diagnosed with ADD, due to severe inattention, but they put me on Strattera first. This video makes it seem like they should have tried Adderall first. Do you think I should raise this issue in my next psych appointment?

Both can work very well if you think your current meds don,t work then bring it up but adderall isn’t a miracle cure either
