What a great video - pity the same thing couldn't have been done in Attercliffe's bustling heyday. Thanks for making and posting. My Grandparent's had a grocery shop and beer off on the corner of Chippingham Street and Shirland Lane where furnacemen would quench their thirst from jugs of Duncan Gilmour's 'slape ale.' My Mother's first job was at the 'Boston Shoe Company' in Attercliffe - where she loved trying on the latest fashionable footwear! Anyone remember it?

Thank you for watching I'd recommend also checking out the Sheffield History website as I think they will definitely remember Boston Shoes! Www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk ♥️

Excellent video. First time I've seen clear blue skys over Attercliffe. I saw the 'King and I' at the Adelphi with my parents when I was about 6 in the 1950s. There was also a cinema at the foot of Staniforth Road, which was very popular. Staniforth Road was named after a mayor of Liverpool.

Hi! I was a student studying at Sheffield in the mid 90s. It would be great if you could film (or drive through video) Crookes, Broomhill and the university students residences like Earnshaw, Ranmoor area and also the university buildings like Arts Tower, Firth Court etc. Cheers!

7.40 The Queens Head on the corner of Shirland Lane, and a Newsagents next door, I used to got in that Newsagents every weekday for a paper, I think there was an evening star back then too. The Car sales place used to be a FineFare supermarket, also on that side was a bookmakers a furniture shop on the other corner and a Slacks Bakery Shop, Slacks did great dripping cakes. yummm. Across the street was a little B&C Coop, a Reddifusion shop, Frankern Motors was in that area too, (Frank and Ernie), it became the very successful Sheffield Auto Hire van rental business, its where Enterprise sits now across from the Queens Head. I used to work for Brooks Shaw's in the early 70's, they were an old Ford Dealer located on Gibraltar St in town, they had a bodyshop in Attercliffe its where I worked, The front gate was on Brinsworth street and the back gate was on Shirland Lane, so the building and land was that full block, its now a janitorial warehouse, I sometimes used to have a walk around Banners, what a great shop that was, Burtons was on the Corner, Id have a good walk down Attercliffe Rd, there wasn't much there at the time, other than British steel and other steel works, many terraced homes where derelict but there were swap shops, pubs, old theaters and a few cheap car lots, it was a run down area with some decent chippies, I have Great Memories of those days. Thanks for this Video Neil.

I left Sheffield 68 years ago for OZ with my parents when I was 16. I have been back for visits but not since the 90's, and I think of Sheffield often. Thank goodness for Sheffield videos who are keeping me so informed. I was aware that Attercliffe was an industrial area when I left, particularly in steel manufacturing. Is there any heavy industry left ?

Cannot remember a lot of this, changed so much. Was hoping to see if my fathers police station was still standing in some form. Dad used to take me in sometimes to sit with the telephonist who had a knit one pearl one switchboard and she let me put the plugs in. How times have changed. What about covering Broomhill and Crosspool

Hi Gloria I'm a little late with this, but the old police station on Whitworth Lane was demolished in about 1990. A new one was built nearby. |Take a look at picturesheffield.com if you want to see the old one. Just put in "Whitworth Lane" and there are some pictures of it. They have thousands of other pictures of Sheffield too! Paul
