What gauge of silver metal are you using? How do you harden the bail once it's made? I have made some bails but they remain soft after soldering onto the piece. How do I avoid that?

Hi Cedartree, if you love mysteries, I highly recommend Jeanette Cain's Book "Soldering demystified"; it is hands down the most accurate, direct, and foolproof technique demystification I've ever read/seen. It changed my professional work completely (for the better). Good luck.

Hi Andrew Berry, thanks again for this tutorial. You explain everything so well. I would love to see a tutorial from you making a classic bail not soldered on to another piece. I think the bail I think of have a domed rounded look from the inside. And it was shaped on the outside with the file the way you did it at the end. I would love to see see make another bail just like this one but not so flat looking, more rounded edges?

Thanks to you I have made silver rings, earrings and necklaces in the last few months! I am struggling with knowing what file to buy. I have needle files but want a bigger one. Do I really have to spend a lot on a jewellery specific one? This is proving to be an expensive hobby but I am hooked! Could you please tell me what you would buy if you could only have one? There is soooo much confusing choice out there!

ALL of your videos are amazing. One question though, I had always been told you can’t go back and forth w a file. But it saw you doing it quite successfully. What gives?
@garethbaus5471
@garethbaus5471 3 жыл бұрын
Files only effectively cut in one direction, the back and forth stroke just makes it easier to file consistently because it never leaves the work peice. The premature ware thing isn't that big of a problem especially when you are working with relatively soft metal.

What size sheet for gold or silver did you use to make that bail. By that, I mean MM in length and width.
@Atthebench

It depends on the size you want. Try 3mm x 12mm x 0.5mm

@@Atthebench Thank you for your response. But I am from America and we don't really use MM to buy a sheet of gold my distributor is asking for these dimensions. What's the gauge of the sheet you would recommend for medium-sized chain in width inches and length in inches. how much should I buy so I get the most value out of my bails.

3:17 demo begins. Good demo, very useful. It would be useful to know what metals are strong enough to make bails this way. I don't want to use silver but cheaper metals for a more ethnic or tribal look. ONLINE, not ON LINE. (Desc text). Camera needs to focus on work, not on person. Bring it in closer - show focus on work with some lighting. Get right into the demo fast, keep intro out completely. This is outdated, annoying, and wastes time. Minimal talking please. Focus camera and SHOW, don't TELL. Keep it short. You lose people with long tutorials. Edit out footage if necessary. Thanks for no music.
