I'm used to playing low to encourage (Low=Like; High=Hate)..is there an advantage to playing the other way round?

Yes, a number of players do play reverse signals: low to encourage, high to discourage - and there are certainly hands where this could be an advantage. I would say there is not much in it either way. If you do play reverse signals, you should decide on whether to do this both when following to your partner's suit, and when discarding.
