Passing 1S doubled actually works out on that layout as you beat it two for 500 points for a better score than 3NT. On a spade lead by North winning the ace and returning another spade, declarer only gets 5 spade tricks and can’t set up their club and doesn’t have entries to set up and heart or diamond in dummy or a spade to ruff with in dummy. Declarer loses a spade 2 hearts 2 diamonds and 3 clubs

If the opener's 2C bid shows 23+ points, why do we need 8+ points for a positive game force response. Would 5+ points not suffice?
@TonyStawBridgeClass
@TonyStawBridgeClass 8 күн бұрын
@@varunjha7472 you could have a lower limit but 8+ points is what is considered standard. In fact a positive response to a two club opener should alert both players that you may be headed for a slam.

To the question at the end, you’re throwing away the clubs in the first hand because you already have enough winners in the other suits, so you don’t need to create any more winners. In the second hand, you don’t have enough winners in the other suits, so you must lose a club in order to complete the contract.

The crucial stage in these is loosing early before you’ve cashed winners in other suits. Keep controls in the other suits before you lose the lead. This excellent video expands and explains Andrew Robson’s claim that “You’ve got to loose tricks in order to make tricks!”

In that last hand, could your opponents have made 4♠? If you had doubled, would your partner not have bid 5❤anyway?
@SmileyEmoji42
@SmileyEmoji42 Ай бұрын
I think 4♠loses a 1C,2D & 1S to go down 1. I don't think partner takes out your double because of his AC and his void spades (which suggests that you have some)
@TonyStawBridgeClass
@TonyStawBridgeClass Ай бұрын
Your partner should be less inclined to bid five hearts if you double then if you pass. Pass by you is basically saying you’re not sure what to do whereas your partner should only take out your double if he thinks it is the wrong call.

On the last hand (#1) the key to the weaker hand choosing trumps seems to be the outside entries. South knows that north has a weak hand and may well have no outside entries to their strong suit, as is the case here.
@andrewwebb9426
@andrewwebb9426 2 ай бұрын
I suppose the other consideration for the first hand (#5) would be whether they let you play in 2S? North can see it is very unlikely to make game in anything so their best bet might be to simply pass, as Tony comes to from another direction. If they do let it play in 2S, south’s weak two opening has worked perfectly!

On the last hand I'd have been sneaky and started the hearts from the Q or J in the hope that W would get greedy and not play the A believing that E had the K 🙂

Top notch! I love that lead of the K of diamonds in the penultimate hand. Charles Goren always said that if you can’t see the obvious route, you must play to where the cards MUST be if you are going to win.

Assuming the choice is between finessing the clubs and diamonds, then diamonds is better. However, wouldn't first going after the clubs by playing the A and K to see if the Q drops be even better? If the Q does drop, then I can cash the clubs and then take the diamond finesse. If the Q doesn't drop, I can still take the diamond finesse.
@TonyStawBridgeClass
@TonyStawBridgeClass 2 ай бұрын
The Diamond fitness will always lead to success. You can either try the diamond finesse first, and later cash the ace king of clubs, or cash the ace king of clubs first. I think it works out better to try the Diamond finesse first because if that succeeds you can later also try the club finesse while you still have a spade stopper.

In that penultimate hand where you had a hearts stopper, so were only interested in spades; if partner bids hearts, doesn't that tell you they don't also have a spade stopper?

On the last hand, it was important to watch the spades. When your partner leads the spade T and you ruff, they have JT8. With strength in either suit, they would have made a suit preference lead, but they led the middle card. If the have the diamond A, it would be important to return a low diamond to get another ruff, possibly for a trump promotion. A low heart is the passive defense, and it's correct in part, because partner hasn't signalled for an active one.
