"Respect the source material" You can argue about this considering some weapons were removed and new ones were added, "Respect fans' wishes" Insert pretty much every single gameplay feedback that got thrown out of the window, and the game barely changed from the beta in any meaningful way besides mandatory bug fixes "Create a cool artstyle" Arguable but I'll give them a point because they didn't go for the generic realistic artstyle modern games use, though I wish it had an option to choose between high and low resolution textures "Improve only what needs to be improved" Added a recycling system that just adds annoyance because it's half baked, a crap ton of animations that can't be turned off and slows down the gameplay, extremely dumb AI that somehow got worse with the patch, unpredictable grenade rolling behavior, etc etc. "Optimize the game prior to release" That's something I can agree on. Wiithout a shadow of a doubt, this is one of the best remakes of a classic game in videogame history. Basically, it's to System Shock as Black Mesa was to Half-Life. Phenomenal job from Nightdive.
@flare242 Жыл бұрын
It's freakin amazing. I'm basically playing it nonstop since it released. I think that their decision to restart the development to get rid of the more modern approach and game mechanics in favour of staying true to the original was the right one. There are moments (especially when i'm exploring for a long time) when i ALMOST feel like they COULD throw in a bit more content here and there, but then it wouldn't be the Shock as we knew and loved. Which is what they managed in a pretty amazing, spot-on way. I love the voxelized graphics, i love the original sprites you hallucinate during hangover. I love the levels, the colors, the sounds. The atmosphere is GREAT. Nightdive NAILED it. I got just a few, VERY minor gripes. 1.I often get stuck in shallow depressions in the floor. There are these occasional ditches that look completely safe to traverse, but if you fall in them, you cannot climb back out. 2.Mouse buttons 4&5 cannot be mapped to anything, the game just doesn't see them 3.It's impossible to split stacks of items, which makes effective inventory management somewhat bothersome, but that's really a minor thing 4.And the last thing - and that's probably my biggest issue with ReShock, is the voiceover. Although SHODAN is fine, and most of the "realtime" communication is also ok, the voice-logs you're finding around the station are quite a bit weaker. I know that the original is pretty much a benchmark of top-tier quality voiceover work, so it's very hard to fairly judge ANYTHING next to it. But after listening to few of the voice logs, i noticed that i'm a bit annoyed by them. The original SS had fantastic production, the actors were great and there was A LOT of atmospheric sound FX UNDER the voiceovers. It felt real. What we got here are commited, but overall just average actors - and a bit of white noise.

The OG voice "acting" was horrible. Just a bunch of programmers speaking emotionless into a microphone.
@irritablerodent Жыл бұрын
Yes, the original vo was amateurish. And that's what made it work. The flat, off beat delivery made the logs odd and interesting. The new ones are just competently acted.
@Gameprojordan Жыл бұрын
The only voice acting that was good in the original was Rebecca Lanzigs messages, and Shodan. Everything else was serviceable to downright bad. It's especially noticeable in the audio logs that were recorded during Shodans reign of terror, where alot of the voice actors had really monotone voices that didn't convey any fear/anxiety in the character's that were struggling to survive. The ones recorded before Shodan started really going crazy were fine because it's just average Trioptimum employees recording themselves talking normally. It can get away with sounding amateurish in those ones because it fits the scenario But yeah, one thing the original DID do well is have alot of appropriately fitting background noise during the audio logs. A major example is when characters were recording themselves while fighting against Shodan's forces, you can hear gun shots, explosions, short circuiting noises, cyborg chatter, bodies dropping on the floor etc going on in the back ground

Development time is entirely dependent on game scale and the developer. People like Miziziziz on KZbin can pump out decently high quality indie games within a matter of months while many games can take upwards of 8 years to develop without even being considered to be in "development hell". For a team I'm personally working on a game with, we made our prototype in 3 months, and are giving ourselves 6 more months to turn it into a vertical slice demo to start marketing it, before hopefully after getting some funding/hype developing it for another 6 months to a year for release.

A couple things to note: you fight Diego on three occasions in the original game. Once in his quarters on Executive, again next to the escape pods, and lastly before you go to the Bridge, where you finally kill him. As for the respawn bay in Engineering, that did exist in the original (every level save for the Bridge has a respawn bay) and the original had the same healing suite and energy station combo

That convenient medical bed next to the respawn point in Engineering was indeed there in the original as well. Watching this around 8 months after the video came out. One thing that I wish to correct is: Immersive Simulations have been a thing since 1992, with the original Ultima Underworld. The term was originally coined in 1991, by Paul Neurath, in a few interviews that he did, after the game debuted that year. System Shocks design concept is a refinement of what was started in the original Underworld; they wanted to simulate the games world as much as possible. As far as Proto-Im-sims, there is one that I know of. That would be Space Rogue, which came out in 1987. That game is an RPG, with first-person space flight sections. The spaces flight, as well as a few other things, were simulated. Paul was impressed with how these immersed the player, and wanted to expand on those concepts as much as possible.
@MrChainsawAardvark Жыл бұрын
I don't know who first said "System Shock is a first person Metroid" but I think the concept fits. You gain new abelites and can access old areas easier as time goes on. A good compromise for what you said about being able to scrape working weapons is lock out any weapons that have gotten an upgrade kit attached, and lockout hard to find weapons that only have 1 or 2 in the game. I spent the first level bringing all the junk on that level into the recycler since you get more credits for not vaporizing them. And I had to do some quick scrapping later on but managed to have a few credits left over by end of game. But I could see how it would get tedious, I wish medipatch didn't run out in vending machines though. Would be a good use for those extra credits if you really needed them.

A few things: You do fight Diego three times in the original, at least on difficulty setting 3, which is what I played on the OG and the remake as well. Once in his secret executive area, along with the security and exec bots firstly. Then the Flight Deck when you're heading for the life pods. Then the area just before the Bridge. The medical/recharge area in Gamma Quadrant on the upper levels is also in the original as well, but it's difficult to get to and has a very hard puzzle keeping the door locked. Similarly to the remake in most ways though, and you can deactivate all upper level locks after unlocking the upper Gamma Quadrant. Oh yeah, and in the original, the surgery bed has live landmines around it, so you have to be careful when using it or if enemies spawn around it. I remember a bunch of Security-1 Bots showing up during one point and destroying everything lol. There were a few other inaccuracies in what you've said was in the original vs the remake, but regardless, I've enjoyed your review and really liked the review you made for the original as well. Nice work.

I absolutely adore the Mod-Kits because they allow you to use literally every weapon into the end game, allowing you to make loadouts that really work well together instead of just taking whatever gun is actually suited for the current enemies you're facing. By the end of the game I went into the Bridge carrying a fully modded Minipistol for sniping and clearing out fodder, a fully modded Magnum for instakill headshots against a lot of enemies, the Assault Rifle with the Full Auto mod as my 'oh shit' damage hose, the Railgun for extremely high burst damage and the Ion Rifle to conserve ammo when I was around energy recharge stations. I'd turned the med-room in Maintenance into my own little armoury where I laid out all the guns I had stockpiled (with mods) and sat there for a solid ten minutes as I deliberated exactly what I thought I'd need going into Security since I knew I couldn't bring them all and couldn't come back for them. A solid 5 minutes of that time was stuck contemplating whether I thought the Ion Rifle or the fully modded Mag Pulse would be more useful. I'm doing a second run right now where I'm trying to use weapons I didn't use as much originally and I'm having a blast with the Grenade Launcher, SMG and fully modded Sparq Beam.

Replayed Enhanced edition a while ago and pretty sure that the surgery machine (along with restoration bay and energy) was always in Engineering. It had a bunch of mines next to it so it was easy to destroy. Same with encountering Diego in Executive levels after that room with all the cyborgs

When it came to the six digit code in my playthrough of System Shock Remake I actually added an additional save on each area in the station that had a number so I wouldn't lose track because I was just too lazy to write it on paper LMAO! I also would have to look up and Google search walkthroughs online from both IGN and GameSpot to see what I needed to do for progression and all. I would also look up walkthroughs of other players of the game on KZbin as well whenever I myself got lost. Nice video btw!

I managed to figure out that enemies don't respawn as annoyingly much if I set the enemy level to 1. I would have wanted harder enemies that don't respawn, or a mechanic that makes you stop it per floor, (like reducing the security level) but at least the game is now enjoyable for me. Just.... fix... the goddamn melee feedback, please!

I got lucky because I went full clepto mode with all the little things I found on the way. By the time I got to the recycler I had a lot of cash. So that was a good idea it seems. I am currently on the floor 2 (research) after cleaning the whole first floor. Yes, I did push the button to see what would happen. Yes, I did save before doing it and then reladed the save. This game is pretty cool!

Man. Best way to perserve ammo in the system shock enhanced and classic was just to rely upon melee and energy weapons, marking down on the map (yes you can add notes to the map in the classic and enhanced games) where the energy stations are and simply hoarding ammo and using grenades on cpus and in emergency situations. Might be low on medical suplies throughout the game doing this but you are moderatly well stocked for the later levels past the groves.

You fight Diego 3 times. Once in his teleport office. Once at the escape pod. And right before entering the Bridge. My only regret is no infinite health cheat to explore the deadly posiouness grove. Even the enhanced addition has cheats disabled from the original game. Shutgun was fun. You can find it in several places by the reactor laser level. What I did not bother with was the plasma gun - I did not know if they devs decided to put an actual hidded detachment of the bridge timer this time, and did not want to backtrack. Magpulse indeed went unused fast. It felt like a emp mini shotgun than a turret melter in the original. The level design is so good, I am replaying the enhanced addition much better since I know what to expect, keep an eye out, and where to go. The engine is greatly setup for a System Shock 2 remake

As someone who loved System Shock back in the day (more than SS2), I'm so happy to see people really embracing the remake. I backed it simply because I personally wanted to play System Shock again, but with some updated graphics and UX. That's what Nightdive promised during the KS campaign, so that's what I signed up for. I expected modern-day gamers to completely shun and hate the remake because it's nothing at all like modern games - it doesn't hold your hand, tell you where to go, what to do, or provide anything in the way of baked-in quest markers. Turns out I was so wrong - most people are thrilled that they aren't being treated like braindead children by some AAA corridor shooter. I haven't spent much time with the final release, but I did complete the backer beta a couple months ago, and am surprised that the respawn system was changed - if I heard you right, you don't get the Game Over animation on Normal difficulty unless you die in a boss battle? That was the behavior for "Easy" difficulty, but not for "Normal" or "Hard" and so that's a bit of a bummer - the death animation was always such a great moment when you hadn't yet found the regeneration chamber for the floor, and added some much-needed tension. Removing that from "Normal" means that you only get to experience that kind of dread and relief if you want an endless spam of respawning bullet-sponge enemies on Hard. Oh well, that's a new-player's loss. I'm so happy to see the love people are showing for such an anachronistic game.
@coolguyjki Жыл бұрын
This is incorrect. You get the game over screen if you haven't activated any restoration bays on the level, like in the original.

The wire puzzles are in the game, they look slightly different but they show up if you have difficulty level 2 or 3 for the puzzles. Also the mag pulse gun is pretty strong if you charge your shots by pressing T first, played on combat difficulty 3 and it was my bread and butter gun for a good part of the game :D

@cdgonepotatoes4219 Жыл бұрын
"the magpulse feels nerfed" brother, that thing saved me so many resources because it could double pump one-shot the infinitely respawning laser turrets in the research level and I swapped it out from my inventory with the shotgun only because I ran out of ammo. I felt every single backtrack I had to do because I had no experience in System Shock beyond Medical like a punch in the gut because I knew there would be another laser turret or two waiting for me somewhere, one that would take three flechette or seven teflon rounds to take down counting that I didn't miss.

The few puzzles Ive come across got me feeling like I might be brain damaged, puzzle pieces not being described didn't help either. Not being able to bind M4 and M5, despite the game knowing you pressed them because it will unbind stuff, if a real big oof. Purple HUD (best HUD) needs to be more opaque, its really hard to read stuff in it at times. Not gonna be able to 100% this on a first go, in part because the max difficulty gives you a ten hour time limit. 13:55 - Honestly this doesnt need to be installed on an SSD, its loads up lickety split on a HDD. Ive not seen many modern games that can boot and load this fast 19:00 - Game really does need a scrap all junk button, or a bindable key to scrap (and rotate) items so you dont need to RMB stuff so much.

I'm glad this one came out good. The whole thing with building and rebuilding the game from the ground up with different engines was concerning. At the very least this will be the last good thing that Nightdive did. With the Atari acquisition, Nightdive very well might be used for another soulless cash grab Atari makes for a claim of it's former relevance. Goddamn it Nightdive, why did you do this.

24:35 Actually you fight Eward Diego 3 times. As newcomer to System Shock my first reaction to entering the reactor overload code was to go to flight deck and yeeet myself via the lifeboats but Diego intercepts you there as well before he gets captured and turned into a knockoff Adam Smasher by Shodan.
