Prior to buying my 2024 Corolla HB, I did a lot of research on the direct shift CVT, and the only report of a CVT failure I could find is yours and yours alone. Considering your CVT failed at the track and there are not any other reports, I'm confident this CVT will last for a long, long time!

The 2019 models had 3k+ recalls for torque converter failure. 2020 models including mine and 3 other owners I spoke with directly had the same failure as mine from normal driving but was replaced under warranty. Mine would have been replaced under warranty since it was completely stock. I could have lied and said the failure happened while I was merging on a highway, but I wanted to be honest. All good tho, and lesson learned. I sure hope no one else has to deal with this long term, but I wanted to document my specific experience with transparency

Thank for sharing this! I have 2019 SE CVT and so far nothing is wrong and going on 65k miles. Is there anything we can do prevent from breaking the CVT like proper warm up before driving or not being aggressive like driving from 0-60, etc?
@FujiboHeavy2 жыл бұрын
that makes me happy to hear man! The K120 CVT's are completely sealed units and the only thing we can do as the consumer, is making sure your CVT fluid gets flushed every 50-60k miles. If you have not had any issues at 65k miles so far, your specific model may not have been affected which is awesome! You can also run your VIN at www.nhtsa.gov/ to confirm if your specific car is affected. Luckily Toyota issued recall for around 3400+ 2019 Rolla Hatch CVT units, that had involved failed Torque Converters, and the only remedy to replace the entire CVT unit. So good amount affected which was a manufacture defect. However, I do believe a small batch of 2020 CVT units, specifically 2.0L Hatchbacks including myself, were also affected, but not to the point of a recall, because the 4 other 2020 owners i spoke to regarding the failed torque coverters were all covered and replaced under Toyota's 60k powertrain warranty. In my case my completely stock powertrain, had a failed torque converter but since I had shared that it the issue happened during a NASA driver education event, Toyota denied my repair even though it was a manufacture defect, they used that specific reason to say me using the vehicle caused the $8k torque coverter to fail. A part that i had never tampered with in anyways, and failed at 20k with no prior warnings or CEL. If you get the CEL its already too late unfortunately. That was mainly why I did make this video in case it starts to happen to 2019-2020 CVT models down the road, we at least have some source of what codes would be thrown, how it would act etc. Sorry for the super long reply lol. But i am truly glad your 2019 has been running well man💪🏻

My uncle has a 2020 Corolla SE 2.0 yes there is a filter and o-ring that you can change if you don't want to just do the drain and fill I suggest doing all three in my opinion we did his first one at 30k and we're going to do it every 30k even though the dealership tries to say do it at 60 if you drive hard or 100K if you drive it like a grandma me personally I've always done it at 30k with all my Hondas and if it's a car that you're really hard on or is prone to having transmission issues like some of the 90s automatics from Honda then we would do them at 15 K and I've had plenty of older Hondas make it well over 450,000 mi But yeah with these Corollas if you're hard on it like some people are like my uncle is specially since his is modified we're doing it every 30k regardless of what the dealership says and we're going to do the filter and o-ring every time not just drain and fill...... I mean cvts are already prone to having issues
@Mrdubomb6 ай бұрын
I was on a cvt rebuilders website and they state to do a drain/refill on a cvt every 40K. I personally think this is way too long, and should be done every other oil change. There is no such thing as lifetime fluid-especially on an engineering disaster like a cvt. If your transmission pukes out on the hwy, the best thing for that car is to be rear-ended by a transport truck.

Please share this if you know anyone with a 2020+ Toyota Corolla CVT and read the video description for detailed symptoms and when this CEL can possibly come up. If you get the Check Engine Light, DO NOT panic when it happens, and safely pull the vehicle to the side of the road as soon as you can, because the engine could stall (LIMP mode) at anytime while the CEL light is on. I have not heard any reports of the vehicle stalling while the Check Engine Light is NOT illuminated. I feel that any affected 2020 CVT models will start surfacing over the next year or so, now that model has been out for almost 2yrs. Only time will tell. Please comment below if your 2020+ CVT Corolla has experienced this failure, in addition, please report this issue to the National HIghway Traffic Safety Administration: www.nhtsa.gov/ to make Toyota, current CVT Corolla owners and potential buyers aware that this issue could potentially happen during highway speeds, or uphills. Late 2019 Toyota revealed the new look, economical with higher kw output to retain the market. However installed the 10 gear auto transmission with 1st launch gear seperate to the remaining gears 2-10 for low range driving up to 10klm. As this included a seperate gear for the CVT the launch change raises the oil temp. reducing the lifetime of the transmission oil causing damages to bearings and gear shifter acceptance with the automatic records resulting in safety mode. Toyota installed this seperate launch gear in balance with VW cvt to reduce fuel consumption and greater output with the 10 gears generate heat with no monitor. The heat will reduce the lifespan of both oil and seals in the CVT requiring greater maintenance at half the previous earlier model travel distance (klm) which were released and tested from 2013, only recall 2014 for manufacturing metal shavings located in CVT during production. Today the same CVT continues to be installed in Toyota's from late 2019 to 2023, the used car market private and dealers confirm the CVT faults experienced by owners as reflected in low klm travelled and Corolla's being sold after 1-2 years of ownership. Toyota will not cover the repairs or replacement as this is the standard CVT installed as agreed at purchase. Transmission specialist (reputable with 30+ year private history) will provide you the CVT model from Toyota with repairs or replacement from $3,500 - $5,500, although this fault will repeat with the same CVT in time. I've experienced the error with VW Golf and grandparents new Toyota Corolla Sport model, dealers reply advising the standard service to be completed and nothing recorded on the electronic records for the CVT error. Corolla private sold in 2 weeks at $7k below the purchase with 11,800 klms

congrats! I personally have not heard any issues with the 2021+ Corolla CVT models, since Toyota started using a completely different cvt. I wanf to say that lowering the car, and exhaust does not affect the powertrain, however it really depends on the dealer inspecting the car. Worst case scenario, if something does happen within the 60k powertrain warranty period, I highly recommend keeping the vehicle as oem as possible before taking to the dealer. Otherwise the dealer will try to deny warranty repair, even though the mods have no relation to the powertrain at all. I have heard a dealer deny a 2020 owner transmission repair because they blamed it on the car being lowered, bald tires, and exhaust and said the car was "driven beyond its limit" which I dont understand how those mods relate to the function of a stock powertrain. Never the less, if something does go wrong, make the car as oem as possible before taking into dealer to be looked at. Again, this is a worst case scenario

@@damianbaez8016 should still be covered under warranty! Unless you have engine/ecu modifications. They cant deny unless they can prove that your exhaust or sound system directly caused your CVT to fail

oh man :( Hatchback or Sedan model? Im hoping it was replaced under warranty? Sorry to hear and thank you for reporting!

@@FujiboHeavy sedan made in Canada honestly I would not buy another Toyota after this however Toyota did fix it under warranty free of charge but still I don't trust this car it shifts horribly all the time and I'm in constant fear of the belt breaking again because I'm now out of warranty I'm hoping to get a Mazda 3 very soon they don't use CVT

@@honda71000 Gotcha. Yea Im the same way as far as CVT goes, but this is definitely the first 2020 Corolla Sedan 2.0L, I have heard of with failed torque converter. Helpful to know its not just hatchbacks. But yea, I do question the CVT reliability going out so early without warning, so I dont blame you not trusting Toyota/CVT's anymore after this experience. Sorry again this happened, and I appreciate your info and comment for the community! Best of luck on your next car sir👍🏼👍🏼

I haven't heard any CVT problems on the Toyota Corolla with the 1.8
@FujiboHeavy Жыл бұрын
nope. The 1.8L uses completely different CVT system. This is only for SE models that have the 2.0L engine
@Fremen02 Жыл бұрын
@@FujiboHeavy Now that the 2023 LE base uses 2.0L engine, is that a problem? are they using the same CVT? even with 60k warranty I wouldn't want to worry about this cvt transmission
