😂 They’ve always gone back and forth copying each other. Universal was so ticked when Disney opened MGM Studios (“Hollywood Studios”) in Orlando. Disney has never been as successful as executing a true studio-style park, though (their studio park in Paris is the worst Disney park by a mile). Universal’s hindrance was always their over-reliance on screen-based experiences and lack of remarkable IP. But now there seems to be a bit of a reversal, with Disney incorporating more screens and fewer animatronics, and Universal using more practical effects instead of screens. Now that Harry Potter, Nintendo, and Dreamworks are part of their stable of IP (in addition to Universal Monsters, Jurassic Park, etc.), combined with the larger scale and higher caliber of their latest offerings, they are poised to topple the Magic Kingdom.

Hey! Really interesting commentary. A few thoughts from a UK-based theme park fan... It's a massive oversight to not mention the expansion to the Studios park in Paris. They're literally doubling the size of that park and bringing in three new lands, including Frozen. I think that's going to drag a lot of traffic over from the UK when it opens. On the other hand, Paris can be expensive for a lot of UK visitors. At certain times of the year, it's only a few hundred £ cheaper to go to Paris than Orlando, which is insane when Paris is a 50 minute flight away and Orlando is 9 hours. If the Universal UK park drives prices down at Paris as they fight for the same guests - AWESOME. The last thing to mention about Universal UK is that if they're clever, they'll avoid the seasonal opening schedule of other UK theme parks and figure out a way to bring as much inside/under cover as possible. British people will absolutely go to a theme park in the winter - the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland and the popularity of DLRP at Christmas proves that. Universal UK needs to be a year-round park for sure.

The problem Universal faced is the Disney resorts are more developed (more parks & hotels) and attract more visitors resort to resort. So, Universal is countering this in two ways. One, by expanding existing resorts to better compete (Epic Universe for Orlando). Two, by expanding with more dispersed parks/experiences. Instead investing in a "2nd Orlando" mega resort, they are investing in several small & medium sized projects. Look what their Europe strategy seems to be. Instead of opening a Disneyland Paris seized resort (two parks, with room for 3). They are building a Beijing sized resort near London, while likely acquiring PortAdventura. Individually, both are smaller than Disneyland Paris, but combined give Universal a bigger theme park presence in Europe than Disney. This can also be seen in the US with the mini Texas park & HHN experience in Vegas. The one area of business Universal doesn't have an answer for is cruises. Disney is a small presence in that market, but has high profit margins. Perhaps Universal can partner with a cruise line chain like Royal Caribbean, or have very large resort hotels in the cruise ship region.

The real killer is that Universal Studios Hollywood has the new Mario land, but Disney calls one of their parks in Orlando - Hollywood Studios.
@brooksfire95809 ай бұрын
Oh, if you go to somewhere like AAA to book a vacation, there is a huge Disney section (with flags, banners, posters, mickey ears, videos playing on TVs, etc) where there are like 2-3 agents who focus 100% on Disney. There is nothing for Universal like this. Yeah, they can book a Universal vacation, but agents don't steer people towards it. And the word 'Universal' is so generic, I think that is part of the problem.
@ritzkola23029 ай бұрын
@@brooksfire9580 Perhaps that’s where the confusion stems for a lot of it. People calling travel agents and not knowing what to ask. For us we just get in the car and drive there. No travel agent. Four hour drive from Miami. We just get up and go. And learned through the experience and asking workers/locals in Orlando area questions time to time. A luxury people outside of Florida don’t usually have.

I am working a ridiculous amount of hours each week. When I go to a theme park I want to leave the mobile in the car and have a good time feeling like a kid again... seeing characters I love and experiencing cool stuff that makes me feel like in the movies. Universal just worked last year. Got into the park and had fun with all those cool rides using the single rider line after the first time in the standard line (oh boy... there are cool things to see in the lines), got my picture with Homer and Bart, bought a wand at Olivanders casting spells in Diagon Alley... I was just a little boy again for 2 days. When I worked myself into what Genie+ and all this stuff is, that I should take special hotels to enter Disneyland earlier to be able to ride the most interesting stuff... sorry, I lost Interest at that point. I don´t want to work with a mobile device, when I am on vaccation. And after hearing the dissapointed reports of my relatives that they didn´t even saw Mickey and Donald, I am just glad I did not waste my time and money. I also could not care less about everything Star Wars related Disney put out besides Mandalorian.

I honestly think Universal has already overtaken Disney. And Universal is still rocketing higher in the theme park industry while Disney is faltering, sputtering and sinking in real time. I personally don't think there's any competition especially when you see how Disney functions and drugs their feet in getting anything done.

They should make a Pixar Theme Park in Texas to compete with the Universal Kids park. A Deadpool/X-men theme park in Las Vegas to compete with HHN. Finally I think they should build a another Disneyland in Northern Europe that way they can make all the dough in that Theme park area. Also to take away from Universal London.

Even if the parks are spun off and can keep everything they bring in for park-related expenses and growth, the parks would never be able to recover as quality might continue to tumble even if Disney Parks & Experiences was its own thing like Mercedes-Benz and private like Hershend as Apple or whomever might end up putting all the parks into licensing deals-not just Tokyo and that might throttle expansion more because no one cares about introducing something original to the parks anymore. Its only that The Country Bears and Figment are so tied to the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT being basically opening day attractions (okay, Figment wasn't ready to open with the park, but Figment and Dreamfinder were still there basically day 1) that they are simply accepted into the Disney/Disney Parks Zeitgeist that Western River Expedition just wouldn't have. Now if Lone Ranger actually worked out, maybe things would be different there and making Tiana for Disneyland and Lone Ranger-based rehash of Western River for the MK version would work-but as Jack of DSNY newscast brought up that even though Princess and the Frog is set in the 1920's between WWI and the Great Depression, Louisiana was acquired in 1803, before mining in the west of what would've been Spanish/Mexican territory at the time of the purchase. What comes next after Mexican Cession in 1848: Gadeson Purchase (the southern part of Arizona/bit of New Mexico) after the Civil War (Antebellum kind of woke and that was basically what Splash Mountain represented) and going back to that wouldn't make sense. After that, Alaska and Hawaii. Universal owns Balto, so that doesn't work, we could do Moana for a Hawaii and they can do this credibly because of Aulani. They could go back to 1920's Chicago using research for the original DLP Main Street Plans and Dick Tracy Crime Stopper ideas

Universal made an amazing and immersive harry potter themed land that was true to the source material. They are doing the same with Mario to great fanfare. Gee I wonder why everyone likes universal more now...

Clearly not . international fans always choose Disney over universal. It’s is more known. Disney has a reputation worldwide that universal don’t have. Although Americans think it is close. It’s not even close outside of America. Universal just started building a worldwide reputation recently. Opening Beijing uni to combat the Shanghai Disney. While Disney has another park near located in HK. Universal also opened a park in Osaka Japan. To combat Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea, these two parks combined. Are better than Disney world and California’s. So clearly the universal can’t beat Disney in Japan. Universal has won the popularity contest in Singapore with the one major park. But arguably the worst park in the lineup. But closing Madagascar right now is will not help the universal international market. Meanwhile Disney added beauty and the beast ride in Tokyo Disney and fantasy springs in Disney sea. A unique Zootopia land in Shanghai and a World of Frozen in HK. Osaka has not new development. Singapore is bringing a minions land. Which is questionable. And a whole new park in Beijing. The Asia market may be equal. But in Europe right now, Disney wins 100% as Disney Paris has two parks. Where the weaker park will get a 3 land expansion. Attracting more guest. So u could argue that universal wins in the us. And if Disney loses. Universal still has a lot to catch up internationally. So if international theme park fans come to us. It will always be Disney first

Sorry, but Disney is already in 2nd place. Universal Orlando only has 2 theme parks and a water theme park and they've been doing just fine. Meanwhile Disney World has 4 theme parks and 2 water parks. Ever since both parks opened up after COVID, Universal has been manhandling them. They opened up with the Jason Bourne Stuntacular Show, the Jurassic World: Velocicoaster, which is the best coaster in Orlando, and Illumination's Minion Land with a new attraction and a variety of food services which is just a huge addition for the park, but also targeted towards kids! That alone has brought so many people over to Universal's Orlando Resort with the addition of Disney fumbling and losing their own consumers based on their own choices that ultimately cost them. Universal has also demolished the kid's area next to ET and are rebuilding it right now to a DreamWorks themed area. Universal's theming has also gotten better with the addition of their food quality getting better as well. Mardi Gras is a perfect example of that. Staying at a premier hotel and all your guests receiving a free express pass is a big plus and it doesn't add any additional prices or fees. Disney got rid of their fast pass system for the Genie+ system which I have not heard many good things about. I personally haven't tried it, but I know people who have and it's just a mess to use. Now you gotta think, Universal is in the process of finishing up a brand new theme park that has HUGE IP's like Super Nintendo World, another Harry Potter property, the Dark Universe, and How to Train Your Dragon. Not to even mention it's opening up with 3 hotels and it's going to be "Something no other theme park has ever seen before". If you're Disney, you're worried and looking over your shoulder.

I recently did the 4 Disney World parks and both Universal parks in the same week. With the exception of the incredibly well-themed Potter areas in Universal, the rest of the areas were really poor, with exception being Springfield, which is likely to be demolished soon. I literally saw a chubby Cyclops and Wolverine leaning against the wall at a quick service restaurant talking to another employee in Islands of Adventure. Disney has been slacking in quality as of late in their parks, but they are still so far ahead of Universal in Florida overall in terms of experience with the exception of Potter. I would absolutely love if Universal gave the rest of their space the same care that they've given to the Potter areas as they are, in my opinion, the best themed areas that exist.

@shorebreakcards9 ай бұрын
If I was at the Disney panel where all they announce is nothing for the parks, I would stand up and ask/say something along the lines of "WTF are you doing, this is not what anybody wants, us and you included. Disney should be innovating, not reacting to others, why are you working at Disney". If I cared about the parks anymore I would do that, I'm a chef and really don't care about feelings, just results. I cannot understand why nobody has said anything to their face, I would be embarrassed.

The climate can be fairly mild in the winter, it would have a similar climate to Disneyland Paris and Universal Beijing. Speaking as someone from the UK, I don't think Universal's UK park will be a game changer, particularly when it comes to detracting from Orlando as a UK resort. There's a misunderstanding of British culture here: what Americans view as driveable distance (such as the 1hr 30 from Birmingham/London), we do not. That sort of distance to me, particularly when growing up (so prime theme park age), is too far for a day trip but not far enough for a holiday. Same goes for the currently existing Alton Towers: quite a well renowned park but I, and most other people I know who grew up near me, haven't been because it's "too far away". Still within fairly easy driving distance but not really a holiday Secondly, the weather even at its peak here is nothing like Orlando. We Brits love good weather and will absolutely pay that money and travel that distance to get it, especially outside of what we would consider good weather season here (hence Brits going to Orlando in Autumn/Winter) Lastly, I think we always have a negative bias towards anything along these lines that is built here as just being rubbish. Unless you go, you never think it's as good as the stuff out in the US, and even then it doesn't compare. Even Disneyland Paris isn't as good as WDW Florida, in my experience. Bedford doesn't exactly ring out as a lovely place to go (nothing against Bedfordians) in the same way as Orlando does TLDR: American businessmen have misjudged British culture imo

I suppose they're waiting for Epic to get finished (it's overbudget but I wager they figure it won't matter in the long run), but I don't even think they've broken ground on either the HHN attraction or the kids park, much less provided any info beyond some vague concept art. I'm hoping they actually happen and don't get cut to pay Epic's bills.

The little worlds in the universal parks felt way more immersive, there were way more pleases to sit and shop within the little worlds, the rides were more fun. Honestly I even enjoyed the food more. The only thing I liked more in Disney was the fireworks at the end of the night. Next time I go back to Orlando I’ll be sticking to universal for longer, rather than splitting my time between parks.
