CORRECTION: The drainage and settlement of Mid-City began in the late 19th century, not the turn of the 20th. I recently found a map of New Orleans from 1878 showing a draining machine at the intersection of Bienville Avenue and Hagan Avenue (today's Norm C. Francis Parkway).

So new time viewer. Just wanted to say thank you for challenging my beliefs about the confederacy. After watching your videos and also doing my own research I've been slowly trying to break those things I was holding on to I shoulda never held onto in the first place
@walterreeves36792 жыл бұрын
Great video. Yep, depressing is the word alright. The references to P.G.T. Beauregard's statue being removed and his activities post civil war point up some of the complexities and paradoxes attending the removal of monuments to former Confederates. In Beauregard's case, you had a monument extolling his services to the CSA while ignoring his later advocacy of civil rights and political equality. Likewise the monument to the White League extolled violent white supremacists while obscuring the role played by former CSA General James Longstreet in defending the reconstruction government against these attacks. What all this points to is that the lost cause mythology was an attack on the historical memory of the South as well as that of the North. In particular, denying the reality of division in the South over Secession and Reconstruction and fabricating the narrative of a monolithic, united, "solid South" before, during and after the war. An exercise in historical falsification that might have served as a template for George Orwell had he been aware of it. The unequal struggle between the adherents of the lost cause and the so-called "scalawags" hasn't gotten the attention it deserves as far as I can see. Which is a shame since it points up that there were available alternatives to the way things eventually panned out post Reconstruction. I think you could make an exceptional video on this score.

Walter Reeves, thank you for your well thought out comments. It is important to note that a person can change for the better and disavow the thoughts and causes that they once supported. The former confederates that you wrote about, turned their lives around and began to work for the "good and justice" . They should be remembered for that work, not their former work for the confederacy!
@suspectsn0thing2 жыл бұрын
@@celiabrickell2500 I've seen many a Lost Cause believer defend Nathan Bedford Forrest despite all the egregiously horrific things he did because "Hey, he said 'sorry' right before he died!" while decrying people who did actual, tangible work to fight AGAINST white supremacist movements after serving the Confederacy. If you want examples of "reformed" Confederates, go for the guys who actually did work, not a slave trader, KKK founder, and racist massacre-committer who said "lol just kidding" one time and then died!
@polferiferus1938 Жыл бұрын
@Celia Brickell - I think they should be understood and remembered for both; for their complexities and arcs, no? In addition, we should investigate how their lives were impacted, and how they impacted others. This is to say, I agree with you, just plus.

I also think it's kind of funny that someone wrote "DIE PIG!" on the bust of someone who's been dead since 1891. The delusions of conspiracy theorists are certainly deep-dives, if nothing else, but as Atun-Shei rightly points out, as conspiracy theories go, this one about Pike is pretty mundane. Nothing quite as flashy-trashy as: "JFK Jr is still alive and will appear in Dealey Plaza to announce, not only that Trump will be reinstated as President-for-life, but that he will replace the traitor Mike Pence to serve as his VP!" Wheeee!

Funny enough my dad (a diehard Kansan Yankee who hangs a picture of John Brown on his fireplace mantle) also has a very old book, called "Father Ryan's Poems". It was published sometime in the early or mid 20th century. And coincidentally it is the poems of that same Irish priest. One of his poems was called something on the lines of "The Gray" referencing confederate uniforms. My dad became obsessed with the Irish after s he married my mom who is the great granddaughter and niece, and relative of IRA veterans, Fenians, Catholic Martyrs and Irish Mobsters. So my dad collected the book from an old library. However his stance on the confederacy and post war south hardly changed and only used the book too understand the Irish on the other side. I'm sure if he knew his monument was destroyed he wouldn't care a bit. Just thought that was interesting.
