Thanks man, I have this exact model and had the same issue with it spinning too slow, was worried I'd need to solder a resistor or something because I didn't want to mess with the pots on the board.

The D33 has three markings on the rubber mat for cartridge mounting. The stylus tip should line up with the middle mark (past the spindle) when the arm is directly over the centre spindle.

IIRC the overhang is about 215 inches.Your close enough, weight and skate are just as important for this TT. I love this album, had it as a kid too in 1977, You can tell its the original, it's on 20th Century Records. Later on, Empire, and Jedi, the soundtracks were on RSO Records,, as 20th Century Records went under. It's a shame too, their pressings always sounded good. My Bonny this version, is by Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers AKA The Fab Four,, actually released in Canada way ahead of the rest of the world before they (The Beatles) became famous. This release was April '62 & I used to have the EP before a chunk of my Lp's were stolen, (including all 3 of the original Star Wars Soundtracks, approx. 400 in all). Many have yet to be replaced and were rare European imports and/or first pressings, I bought new growing up,.. very expensive to replace in todays hipster vinyl market. Keep on rockin, you got a thumbs up from me,...

The M44-7 has a conical stylus The M55E is the elliptical version and a direct replacement The M44-7 should track at about 2-2.5g and the M55-E at 1.5 grams.

Which one gives a better sound?
@MichaelBeeny
@MichaelBeeny Жыл бұрын
@@Alain_Douce That depends on the turntable. A low-cost TT will work better with the M44-7 simply because it will track better at 2.5grams. A better tone arm that can track at 1.5grams the M55-E would be a better choice.

Smashing repair :-D, i bet it slowly drifted over the years, tiny changes in component values do mount up, i bet the caps had changed every so slightly. Also the presets themselves will move in value due to heat/damp, the end connection clamps are a bugger. Ive never seen a record deck that didnt need some adjustment. Even with the strobe, one speed wont actually be correct, the 60/50hz makes it impossible to make the ideal strobe. I was given a quality but old deck, it was all over the place with speed, the strobe just jumped around like a kangaroo with a promise of sex :-D. The speed switch was the culpret, its resistance changed to random values on every press. I dissasembled it and washed away all the crud, polished the contacts with a rubber cleaner and after a few spots of oil on the pivoting parts it was assembled. Worked like a dream, zero ohms on both positions, no madness, i didnt touch the pcb at all, speed was spot on :-D.

I recently got Ap-D30 it runs slow, I turned the two pots (nearest the yellow wire) anti-clockwise to max got it up to about 31rpm and 40rpm. Judging from this video its not the Caps as the speed is constant. Looks like will have to back to my Stanton.

The Beatles with Tony Sheridan doing My Bonnie. Instrumental of Cry for a Shadow written by George Harrison, I think. John Lennon singing, Ain't She Sweet. I've got the ATCO 45 single of this song. Somewhere... This was a very worth while video. Thanks for doing this. I imagine the guy gave you this turntable because of the speed problem. Who would have thought the fix would've been so simple. Regards, Tom

Great video! One thing you didn't note (maybe because it didn't need adjusting) is that there is a mechanism to adjust the point at which the auto return process kicks in at the end of the record. That small hole at the 11 o'clock position behind the tone arm pivot has a rubber stopper over it. Remove the stopper and you will see a small plastic screw. Incremental movements of this screw adjusts the lift up position. Also, there are Owner's Manuals and Service Manuals for the D30 and D33 at vinylengine.com

Hi, I have an Akai AP-D40 and it seems to be having problems with the speed switch. When I push it down to specify it's playing a 45rpm record, it starts playing "fine" but then suddenly it slows down to 33 rpm and goes back up to 45 rpm .. maybe not even all the way down to 33 rpm. The speed is fluctuating. I've already spent some time getting the 45 and 33 rpm circle to stand still, like what you're doing in the video. Turning the pods and fine tuning it with the pitch control.. .but that doesn't matter much if it cannot maintain a steady 45 rpm speed. Any ideas for that?

@12voltvids
@12voltvids 8 жыл бұрын
Most certainly it is a rebadge. Llikely a Sanyo or some other Japanese brand. Viking was the house brand for the T. Eaton company, which was a large department store in Canada. They closed their doors back in the mid 80's. I should know the exact year, as my father in-law worked for the company for something like 30 years until they went belly up. They were the first of the big 4 in Canada, (Sears, Woodwards, The Bay, and Eaton's) to go belly up. Today there is only 2 left, The Bay, which is the oldest company in Canada, and can trace their roots back to the arrival of the Europeans in Canada, starting out as a trading post, and Sears which are closing stores up left right and center.

hello 12voltvids i enjoy your videos. could you please help me with a problem i'm having? i got this same akai ap-d33 turntable at my local thrift shop. got it all cleaned up very nice, put on brand new cartridge and needle, hooked it all up to my stereo to test it out and i ran into two big problems. the speed is very slow and the audio is very low. i have to set speed on 45rpm and turn pitch knob to max just to play a 33 album, and with my stereos volume on max, the audio from the turntable is very soft. could either of these problems be fixed? i'd really hate to see this unit go in the trash. the new tables just aren't made like this anymore. should i just trash it? any advice please and thanks for reading. by the way i'm phil from pennsylvania.
@waitingforthetrain2690

i'm probably a few years late, but have you hooked the turntable up properly? what i mean is did you hook the Turntable outputs to a phono input and also connect the ground cable? and also for the speed, you would have to make adjustments to the speed potentiometers just like Dave did in the video, should be fairly easy even for a first timer!

Tried to fix a DVD player this weekend, no disc message. Upon carefully adjusting the DVD laser potentiometer I got it to playback again but with a slight stutter which I dont know the cause off. The power supply section also emits audible noise, I believe it's the transformer. What causes this vibration, timing problems due to bad caps? There are a couple of 400V near the rectifier diodes, can I discharge them with a 60W incandescent light bulb? I found this channel last week and have been avidly watching VCR and DVD repair videos. I also have an old VCR that now spits the tape out after a few year without using it, will look at the rotary encoder.
@ciprianwinerElectronicManiac
@ciprianwinerElectronicManiac 8 жыл бұрын
Yes you can discharge the capacitors with a light bulb but there will still be a spark due to the inrush current of the light bulb so that may not be the best option. Just use a resistor and don't hold it with your hand (I tried that and it gave me a very nasty shook) If the power supply is making noise then probably there may be some bad capacitors.
@Friendroid
@Friendroid 8 жыл бұрын
ciprianwiner Ok, it's fixed, it was the capacitor before the rectifier which wasnt good and was somehow causing the audible noise. It was rated at 47uF 400V and I replaced it with a 39uF 400V just to give it a try. This got rid of the oscilation but the No Disc message started showing up again, therefore i adjusted the laser potentiometer again. The unit had been retrieved from the garbage so one piece of waste less around. Btw, I used a plair of pliers to discharge the capacitors, checking then before and after for AC voltage. Thank you and this channel.

It really sucks that Electrohome doesn't exist as a manufacturer anymore. Sure, amplifiers are still made in Canada, but I mean, Electrohome made _television sets_ in Canada. In some ways, Canada was better in the mid 20th Century. Canada had a distinct identity. Electrohome, Eaton's, Seagram's, Woodward's, Canadair. Canada had a 'brand'.

Canada's electronics manufacturing went down the tubes just like the US manufacturing and for the same reason. Everyone wanted cheaper products. They were not prepared to pay a premium just to get something made in the home country, and damit, if the government intervenes to prop up the inductry, well that is seen by some as communism. Everone wants things cheaper, and with the flood of cheap electronics from Japan, and yes that is where they initially came from, our industry was hurt. Then when down and bleeding, the government, in the 80's imposed an embargo on Japan. They couldn't import their goods here. I remember when I was first getting into electronics I worked at a dealer that sold Zenith and Hitachi. We had a dozen or so Hitachi TVs sitting in the repair shop waiting for new flyback transformers and we couldn't get any. I remembered one irate customer that had a relatively new TV that was still under warranty and the picture tube failed. He was livid and my old boss said to him, something like, and I am relying on a distant memory, as this was 1980 when I worked for this little shop after school. Remember when I recommended that Zenith TV, and you chose the Hitachi. Remember how I said that Zenith parts were from the states, and supply was never going to be an issue? Well this is why I said that and now you are waiting for parts from Japan. Right to the late 80's there was an embargo on Japanese manufactures. Manufactures that were already here were able to sell product but it was expensive as there was back then the federal Excise Tax. Every single TV sold by Japanese manufactures had a tax added before the dealer even saw it. The border was closed to new imports of product. There was a loophole though. If a Japanese company bought a Canadian company, they could import their chassis, and assemble them here under the brand that they bought. So that is why we saw Quasar TVs with Panasonic guts. Mitsubishi bought Electrohome and assembled theie sets in Ontario for many years. They had to maintain the brand for 10 years. I have several Electrohome VCRs which are really Mitsubishi units. The VCRs were brought in from Japan, but the TVs here. Panasonic for years assembled theor own branded sets here, as they also did in the USA. When NAFTA formed though all the companies quickly scrambled for the southern boarder and moved operations to Mexico, where they still make them today because the labor is much cheaper.

I don't have any Dave Brubeck on vinyl. I have him only on CD. I did have Time Out on vinyl many years ago, and when it came out on CD I bought a copy and gave away the vinyl. Kicking myself now, as that was one of the greatest albums ever recorded. A masterpiece. It is hard to pick one single album as a masterpiece because it was all great stuff. I remember when I was a teenager sitting there for hours with my bass playing along. Always wanted to learn the big double bass, but had to settle for a j-bass. Not quite the same thing, but it was fun anyway.
