Everyone's heard about the au pair horror stories, but thankfully, not many of us have to live them. Edwina had a different reality.
Sometimes, the only thing you can do is to moan to your friends.
Use Facebook websites to meet other au pairs in the same situation as you:

Wondering why we're a little sweaty? For Edwina's au pair horror story, we're in the Philippines. Which explains the late posting, sorry!
If you want to find out more about our trip in South East Asia, then check out Edwina's vlogs. The internet is causing delay with the promised Monday videos!

Sounds emotionally manipulative. As I'm seeing people discuss their experiences on KZbin, it's becoming clear how important it is to lay down the line between member of the family and employed young adult.

wtf!!? they are strict labour laws in France: you get two days off, that's it, you could have sue their asses. you did'nt have to be jealous , that situation would have been taken very seriously by work authorities you know. It's max 35 hours a week , two days off , 11 hours break minimum between when you leave work and when you start work the next day, if you work on a sunday they have to pay you double. People , you can't just not read the lww before you accept a job , whatever country you go to , things must be legit !

Thank you for sharing! We have been considering bringing in an Au pair when we have our first child in the coming year or two, after I had worked as an Au pair coordinator. It is so SO important to us to learn about the good and bad situations Au pairs face with host families to ensure we do not make the same mistakes, and to ensure our Au pair is as happy with us as we are with them. In the past year, my mom and I have met so many Filipino Au pairs who have dealt with awful situations with their host families and have become so passionate about advocacy for them, that we have considered starting an agency exclusively FOR Filipinos looking to work as domestic help and childcare help in the U.S. for Filipino families and ensure they are treated right. Would love to connect!

I am not young, I am 35years and after not getting a job in so long, I have considered looking for a job as an aupair because I love kids but I am very soft and wish to not come across such families that Bully or take advantage of one's kindness.

Hello, I’m kinda having the same problem like Edwina had in the past right now. I’ve been in Paris for a month now and I feel like my host family is taking advantage of me. I really don’t know what to do.. I know that I should talk with my host parents about this, but a few days ago when my host dad went out of town spontaneously cause of business they told me I couldn’t attend language school in time, because I had to bring the kids to school first, which is like very far away from my language school and since it’s already not that much on hours I have there and I have to pay for it from my own wallet for this I wasn’t thrilled about this. But my host mum insisted in bringing the kids first to school since the kids have to be my priority and she doesn’t want to pay for a cab, every time my host dad is not available, even though they said that it happens occasionally that he’s not available because of work. My host mum studied law as well and she is very bossy, that’s why I’m afraid about talking with her about my mixed feelings and about the 38h I’m working for them a week, which is quite too much I guess. Also I really get Edwina, when she talks about comparing your own situation with other Au Pairs and feeling miserable after. In contrast to my other Au Pair friends here I’m doing wayyyyy more for less..which makes me very unhappy. I really don’t know what to do. I’m really disappointed about the talk with the mom I had the other day and it amplifies my feeling that I already had before all the more that I can’t do anything by talking that this wouldn’t change anything at all, just make the relationship more awkward and uncomfortable.

Hi there! We are so so sorry to hear that. It is very frustrating when your host family does not meet their end of the deal. Please, consider if you would still like to be there and if not, think about rematching. The most important thing is that you enjoy your year abroad and that you feel comfortable in your new home! If you do consider rematching, please let us know, we can totally help with that. -----> www.aupairohparis.com/help Let us know how you are doing and if there is any way we can help!

@mmjkk
@mmjkk 5 жыл бұрын
Mimi 1417 not sure if this is late, but depending on what country you go to the minimum rates are already decided. This is especially true for EU countries, where the law tells you the minimum to pay an au pair but also sometimes can prevent you from paying them way more (because of tax reasons). All in all don’t expect a living wage (i.e. a wage that is the same as someone who must pay for their housing, bills, transport). You’re being given pocket money, not really a “salary” but you can negotiate to have additional benefits like your public transport paid for or access to the car.
