Curator Stephen Calloway and drag performer Holly James Johnston sit down to tea to discuss the 'dos and don’ts' of dandyism according to artist Aubrey Beardsley.
Beardsley shocked and delighted Victorian London with his black and white drawings. In fact, the 1890s even became known in some circles as the ‘Beardsley Period’. At the centre of this decadent world was the ‘dandy’, an elegant and enigmatic character made famous by Beardsley and friends like Oscar Wilde.
An exhibition of works by Aubrey Beardsley re-opens at Tate Britain on Monday 27 July, now extended until 20 September 2020. Book tickets via our website: www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate...

Iris Apfel. not because I think her style is trendy but bc she seems to constantly project her own image (an identity) through her clothing/accessories/beauty. if I were more current with contemporary music/video, I would probably choose a musician as alternative. well, maybe Janelle Monae. but I think Apfel also stands out bc of gender + age.

I love the inclusion of black diasporic dandyism and "dandyism [as] something that can be reconsidered, reimagined, and reinterpreted." Very well done!

The pictures shown are not black diaspora, they are black Africans. They are dandies in Africa, can’t remember exactly where, maybe Nigeria or Uganda. You can find some reports about them on KZbin.

His cousin, Dr. David Beardsley Smith carried on the tradition. He was my father in-law 😁 I went on many vacations with him, and obviously he wore snazzy outfits. He was fun to buy gifts for because I could buy him anything, an old needlepoint footstool, or a gold toothpick, a set of antique buttons. He loved everything decorated! And old!

I saw Holly, I saw her doppelganger, just yesterday, she works at a Valvoline service shop, she wears a mechanics shirt, her name is sewn over her breast, it reads Gabby, she has the loveliest dollface, and her androgyny is sublimely erotic, I read Walt Whitman, I read about Walt Whitman, he left New York-a-dandy and returned New Orleans-a-rough, Holly is a dandy, Gabby is a rough! I look at a book of Manet, I look at Olympia, I look at Olympia's eyes, I look at Holly's eyes, I remember Gabby's eyes, I see it now! I understand the panic in the Salon, it's 1865 and men are beating their umbrellas against Édouard's painting, the men are not appalled by the subject of a fallen woman, they are abhorred by the image of an androgynous girl I read Blood Meridian, Chapter X, Et In Arcadia Ego, 0:48, it's everywhere, it's all around me

Also, dont you think Beardsley liked playing with gender dynamics and assumptions? I mean one of his pictures is worth all of the words that these two in the video have said, and more. You cant disassociate an artist from the subjects of his work just because it makes you uncomfortable.
