My wife, Tammy, and I toured Australia and New Zealand in February. I was lecturing about the topics covered in my book, 12 Rules for Life (and also Maps of Meaning, my first book). I had a number of the lectures professionally filmed. This is a highlight from my lecture in Auckland on what a person might consider mastering before embarking on a political career.

"You shouldn't be seeking power. You should be seeking competence." This line is not only extraordinarily true but it perfectly sums up what Peterson is attempting to accomplish with his lectures and speeches which I think is an amazing thing to do.

Bad idea. He's currently bypassing the political level and that's good. Don't get mistaken, we've elected Dr Peterson. He's expressing ideas we all have inside of us. It's not about him, it's about us. Time has come for him to talk. And if he hadn't, someone else would have. The way he placed himself years before his breakthrough makes me think he understands this far better than we do. I don't know if it was necessary but I think that's good. Sometimes I wonder if he could "feel" decades ago that he had the ability to trigger a major mutation in human mindset balance... Whatever, that's not a tellable story.

I wouldn't wish to see him involved in mud slinging and dark dealings that any politics is very much about. It would be a pity if such a person would have to sacrifice himself for that job. It takes a different type of personality. But it's true that I can't hardly see a career politician right now who would be up to the task. It's worrying. Perhaps, it does take somebody from outside the political class. :/

There are very few, if any, true polymaths in the modern world, and I wouldn't classify Jordan Peterson as one. Most subjects are so specialized that it's nearly impossible to master multiple fields in one lifetime. You can certainly become a jack of many trades, but to become an expert in economics, world affairs, physics, chess grandmaster, virtuoso composer, and UFC heavyweight champ is a something which exists only in Dos Equis commercials.

For those of you talking about _40% of what Dr. Peterson says going over your head._ Try turning on the closed caption ("cc") located at the bottom right of the youtube video - then pause the video when you need to look up vocabulary and phrasing you don't understand. I have a file marked "Jordan Peterson" on my desktop and keep updating it with word and phrase definitions on a regular basis. This not only improves my vocabulary, but I often refer to my "JP" file when I need to better express myself in an intelligent manner. For example: *"An unholy marriage between postmodern nihilism and a Marxist utopian notion makes no sense at all! Postmodernists are skeptical of metanarratives... yet Marxism is a grand metanarrative itself".* (Dr. Jordan Peterson) _Copy and past this the next time you have a discussion with a liberal postmodernist._

@Jaze2022
@Jaze2022 5 жыл бұрын
That is a great idea. I need to try it. Careful using words and saying things that don't belong to you though or that you don't truly understand inside and out. I remember Dr Peterson once said that (and I paraphrase) "one day he realized that he was saying things that he hasn't earned the right to say. He was quoting and referencing great minds that he has read in books but did not truly grasp the meaning to." I still try to reconcile with myself on what that truly means. The best that I've come up with is that if you can't debate those ideas that you believe in with someone smart and disagreeable then you don't truly own those ideas. So if people start using your statement in bold, it'll either go over their opponents heads, shutting down any fruitful discussions or they'll be challenged to give examples and to explain themselves or be given counter examples, all of which will make the user of "unearned statement" look like a fool and a mindless drone. Just some caution to the wind.
@impancaking
@impancaking 5 жыл бұрын
@@Jaze2022 well winded caution :) Introducing people to Peterson can go over easier if we accept that lots of people havent been exposed to him in a psychologically safe way. We can counter that with mindful and patient discussions. *as in use good quotes as long as we're willing to follow up with discussion.

@@impancaking :) long winded but I think it was worth sharing my personal experience. It was surprising what people countered my arguments with. I felt I had a good grasp on Jordan Peterson's message. But to try to transmit that to those you care about who have anecdotal experience on the contrary is nigh impossible for me. Lets not even talk about how strangers/oppositions will react to your message.

@@Jaze2022 we all live in different worlds. Sometimes its use of a word you dont know that person has a hang up with (that person may also not know of) or tone of voice or gesture, and the opportunity to exchange ideas is lost. Often I find people (including myself) arguing the same point against each other, using different terminology for the same concepts. Completely unaware they agree. We all live for those moments of breakthrough, either in others or ourselves. Maybe all we can do is enjoy practising?

As a regular person, one similarity I have with JBP is that I almost finished studying Political Sciences, and then towards the end I understood that I will never get into it, and its not a correct level of analysis for the problems/things I was interested in. It was veeeery useful to study and dwell on political philosophy, theory and history. Its another story to "get into politics". Its a crushing machinery that discards and also kills decent people that are trying to be everything JBP counted as grounds for actually being a good politician and doing something.

I firmly believe, we can see how a world wide change starts at education, e.g. Universitys, then it gets a diploma, then those diploma carriers go into system critical jobs, and input their ideology into that system and the system is being updated/upgraded/reprogrammed

OMG. Professor Petersen, you're at 2.26 million subscribers. That's got to be the highest climb ever seen for a non-vacuous channel ever. People accidentally watch one of your interviews or formal presentations, and they track you down. To here. It's pretty clear you understand the Zeitgeist in historical terms and future potentials. I am not religious, but I can see how old texts are trying to impart wisdom and tell of terrible catastrophes of old which could reoccur.

Jordan, in your book you have a chapter called be precise in your speech. Can you expand on that idea? “Well, it depends on what you mean by expand on that idea.” Jordan, it’s your book. “It depends on what I mean by being precise. It’s not obvious bucko.”

I came hoping he wouldn't. He's got a lot of valuable things to say, but he's a hypocrite in a lot of areas and would not be any better than any other politician. I certainly do not trust JBP on freedom of expression anymore.

@@SolSystemDiplomat do you realize you've written a word salad? There's a difference between being articulate and being wordy to sound intelligent. Like Michael Dyson. 1. "If you've done nothing wrong, you should never apologize" - why did he suggest Kavanaugh step down from his nomination?

I feel that those last lines are describing our current primeminister, with the waving of a wand to fix the worlds ills. Quite ironic that this is from his speech in Auckland. Come back to New Zealand when you can Dr Peterson, hopefully we’ll get rid of the children playing as grown ups in government by then.

Under his definition, yes, it’s useful, because people did depend on them in those positions and maybe they succeeded in that or didn’t. That doesn’t automatically make you competent to have a political office, that’s more dependent on their decisions and effectiveness, being able to marshal people and speak with authority and then use that to get things done. The evidence of competence is obvious because it’s effective. Whether you agree with their aims is entirely different, Professor. ;)

To be honest, I think our politicians are a little too competent. We need our politicians to be less competent as a whole so we can control them. At this point I'd rather have an honest incompetent person who's too stupid to lie, and has too much pride to keep their office if ousted as a liar than a silver tongued snake who can do their master(s) bidding and pretend they're doing it for the good of the country.

I feel that more salient question the any person should ask themselves before getting in to politics is - WHY am I doing this; and then write that down.After that the person needs to hand it to their friends for an honest review. Bureaucracy is about doing things; politics is about having the power to do it.
