Ya, the front driveshaft was never serviced on those trucks. People forget that front driveshaft is live since those AAM don't have free spin hubs like Dana axles. The later model AAM come with the CAD axles disconnect.

I would be willing to bet the failure was a u joint and it destroyed the transfercase.

I can't begin to count how many of these transfer cases I have replaced on these. The front driveshaft is what causes that. The joints go bad and eventually destroys the transfer case and, in some cases, it will destroy the transmission too. Just depends on how fast the person was driving at the time it let go So, if you have more of these trucks replace the front driveshaft with an upgraded shaft. I believe RAM/DODGE has a TSB on these, can't remember.

In 2001 I bought a new DODGE 4x4 with the Cummins. In 2012, 2013 and 2014 I bought new RAM 4x4 pickups with the Cummins engines. The engines are great unfortunately my newer pickups left a lot to be desired... I wish I would have kept the 2001 because it was a great rig. It only had 87,000 miles on it, and still looked like new when I decided that I needed a new pickup... The only problems I had with my 2001 was the lift pump shit the bed right on schedule at about 78,000 miles, and I lost a seal in the turbo. I could write for hours about all of the electrical and emission problems I had with my 12, 13, and 14 RAMS.

Are company has a 2011 Ram 4500 cummins with a 11 foot service body 4 door. She is long. Been Very reliable still has the stock emissions. Can't remember the last time the cel has been on. The only issue was 4th blew up coming back from a road call. Good RFE trans.

I had my eye on that same truck for a while too.But the reason I didn't want to get it is for the exact reason you're repairing right now. I didn't have the space or the time to actually to repair the unit. You definitely got a deal on that one

Yeah, you could say Matt has a problem LOL... I'm glad the transfer case worked out. Your pickup has some miles but it should still have a lot of life left in it, and it was only $5,000. Several years ago I was at the Cummins shop in Coburg because the head gasket in my Pete wasn't gasketing anymore, and I got to talking to a guy that had his 98 Dodge with the Cummins in the shop getting the oil changed. Him and his wife were traveling, and he was pulling a big ass three axle 5th wheel travel trailer. He had 810,000 miles on it and the engine and trans had never been touched except for service... Back when I was younger I destroyed the NP205 transfer case in my 76 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 but I know what caused mine to disintegrate. It was a case of way to much horsepower, and a complete lack of intelligence on my part... Unfortunately the TC wasn't the only casualty. I bent the front axle housing, broke two shocks, bent two wheels, broke one of the motor mounts, and somehow broke the metal battery tie down. When the tie down broke, the battery flew out and landed on the headers and burnt a big hole in the side of it... If the Army Corp of Engineers wouldn't have drained down the reservoir, this wouldn't have happened. Well, that's a lie. It just would have happened somewhere else LOL.

Famous transfer case destroyed lol Huge common issue on 3rd gen 2003-2007 min with running on bad ujoints or ignore maintenance on front drive shaft. If bad enough it take out the OD housing on 48re and possible damage under neath

I have a 05 ram 2500 with the hemi, I had a body shakin vibration when I get to 60 mph I checked everything I thought, turns out there is a alignment pin inside the front driveshaft that holds the double joint I can’t think of the name of it anyway it was no longer a line and it was sagging which let it move around a lot. That was my vibration.

The high output Cummins was only available on 1 ton duallys. Probably a replacement tailgate.

Dodge has been sick for so long, I don't think I'd take a free one. Good luck with your wiring is all I have to say about Dodge. $2K for a Cummins diesel isn't terrible. And it's a '12 which isn't the worst year for Dodge, I guess you still came away pretty darn well. Cheers.

Not sure if it has the DEF system in it but be careful and not hit a bump or potholes and the system “falls off “. 😆😆😆😆😆

Failure to grease the double cardigan joint in the front driveshaft is likely the culprit. It happened in my 2008 Power Wagon. Unfortunately I had much more damage from the front driveshaft slamming into everything after the t-case blew apart. I was going about 70 mph when it happened.

That looks like TIPM failure, it will shift the T-Case into LOW while going down the freeway. Use a Ford np273 and swap the internals (way cheeper than dodge T-case)
