Impressive work and vid...very good indeed. Sure is easiest with the engine out of the vehicle., pretty cramped at the rear engine bay. Pity this engine does leak oil from various sources. Thanks for showing the details and process, excellent job

Yeah, For me it was worth the time to pull it out and deal with all the leaks. Seams you fix one leak, and the next one just shows up. I have done plenty of reseals in the car though. You need to get creative with tools sometimes to get in there and clean up. Thanks for watching, I'm glad I was able to help you out!

You can hold the cam with a 24 or 27mm (forget which) wrench while you loosen or tighten those bolts. The place to grab it is on the other end of the cam so it’s easier with two people. Saw this trick in a JH Motorsports video.

@WillPoweredGarage You mention at 7:05 that it may be necessary to press some of the valves with the cam lobes when installing the cam cradle. I have this issue on one side where the valve springs are preventing the cam from resting in the journals at TDC position. With so much spring tension on the valve springs, how did you manage to press the cradle with cams locked back onto the head?
@willpoweredgarage9692 жыл бұрын
it won't just lay even. The trick is to bring the cam girdle down evenly with all the bolts. you don't want to bring one side down and then the other. It will bind and you could break the camshafts. Just take your time and go down slowly, small turn on the bolts working your way around until its all the way down. Than torque to spec. Thanks for watching.

Hi, a big thank you for your vidéo on this engine, I don't know if you will see this comment because the video is old, but is there a particular procedure when reassembling the flywheel? I change engines but I keep the same flywheel and I don't see any marks or anything! thank you from France

Hi There, No there is not procedure. Like most Audi and Volkswagens the flywheel or flexplate only lines up to certain bolt holes. Once lined up I use blue loctite and torque to spec. Thanks for watching.

for the sealant used as the gasket on the cam girdle spark plug holes, were you worried that the lack of a rubber gasket being there may compress the cam caps on the girdle too much?
@willpoweredgarage9697 ай бұрын
No, these are still machined surfaces. Not sure how to explain it exactly but once it is tightened down the bearing surface is the same. As long as you do not over do it with the sealant. Besides all this, It is what VAG recommends for this sealing surface now. Thanks for watching.

Hi will, I am wondering if it's possible to replace head gaskets without renoving the engine or even the lower timing cover
@willpoweredgarage9693 ай бұрын
I never tried to do that. You might be able to assuming you lock all the timing to tdc before taking it apart. Its not very hard to drop the engine and makes working on it much easier when its out. Thanks for watching and the comment.

How long does it take to reseal the camshaft girdle in a 2013 Volkswagen GTI? What is the length of the entire process from beginning to end?
@willpoweredgarage9699 ай бұрын
It is about 8-9 hrs to complete a job like that. There is a lot to come apart and to be cleaned to reuse.
@pensiveintrovert43182 жыл бұрын
Were cam girdles originally sealed with gaskets and not the sealant you used? I have oil leaking from the junction between the right girdle and the base and trying to figure the easiest way to deal with it.
@willpoweredgarage9692 жыл бұрын
Sealant around the perimeter, gaskets around the spark plug tubes. After a while both start leaking.

If oil is leaking into the spark plug tubes, is it possible to remove the girdle to reseal it, but keep the timing components and camshafts in the head?
@willpoweredgarage96911 ай бұрын
The Short answer is no. If you are feeling dangerous, maybe you could sneak the cover off but the chances of it staying in time or not damaging the bearing surfaces is pretty high.

Hey question? Same car and engine. I might be leaking from my camshaft gurdle or whatever it’s called (new to Audi) I think it’s leaking from there maybe so I need to reseal it. Do I have to take out the whole engine?
@willpoweredgarage9699 ай бұрын
No, you do not need to take out the whole engine if you are doing just a gurdle reseal. You will need the special locking tools, though, to re-time the cams. Also, spend the money and use the recommended vw/audi sealant. That stuff works very well. Thanks for watching and for the comment.

Can't you pull the tensioner pin before torqueing the cam adjuster bolts?
@willpoweredgarage9692 жыл бұрын
Well, you should not rely on the tensioner to hold the cam phasers. Not to mention you need to counter hold them while tighten the bolt and the chain needs to be in the right position to do it.

I found this in a quick online serach. Its pretty simple. It is 3 stages starting from the center and working your way clockwise out. 40nm then 90 deg followed by an additional 90 deg. Make sure you use brand new head bolts since these are torque to yield. ! www.justanswer.com/audi/emmgw-need-diagram-cylinder-head-torque-sequence-spec.html

Hey man, when you have a little bit would i be able to ask some questions about this engine. Great video, i’m currently trying to do a head gasket job in my a 2010 a5 3.2 and i’ve finally gotten to the timing chain and head bolts to remove the head. I have the procedure for the camshafts and everything but in this video it seems you got to the head bolts without removing the cams. I’m also doing this job in car. not with engine removed. I’m just kind of stuck cause i don’t wanna mess up the timing but i also don’t want to take the camshafts out of time
@willpoweredgarage9692 жыл бұрын
Hey, No problem. I'll do my best to answer as I can. With this job, I did not need to remove the cylinder head. I only needed to remove the cam girdle so that I could reseal it. The rubber gasket around the spark plug holes gets very brittle and fills them with oil. My recommendation is if the head it coming off, pull the girdle and cams. As long as you have the cam retaining tool the timing is very easy on these. Really can't mess it up. The cams are in time with the flat facing up with the threaded holes. You will also need the crankshaft locking pin.
@treymallette16962 жыл бұрын
@@willpoweredgarage969 Alright cool, do you have messenger or a number i could text you with some videos along with some questions. And when u say Remove girdle and cam does that mean all together like you showed in the video? Because by the looks of it You removed the gears and then the girdle and cam came off and held its timing in place. Also as for the crankshaft locking pin is that able to lock the crank from the front of the engine? because i’m only 16 and doing this in my garage so i’m very limited with space and equipment.
@treymallette16962 жыл бұрын
@@willpoweredgarage969 And also to add i believe i have removed everything else that has to come off to remove the cylinder head. I’ve taken the cats off, and everything virtually attached to the head. Just the head bolts and the timing chain holding it on atm
@willpoweredgarage9692 жыл бұрын
@Trey Mallette ok, so to get the chains off you need to remove the sprockets. That's why you need the cam locking tool. There are no key ways or way the cams are fixed to the gears. The crank locking pin goes into the side of the block by the driver side motor mount.
