Indeed the V8 RS5 is criminally underrated, kinda like this channel. I've had mine for about a year now and I still can't get enough of it, there's no way I'll ever sell this car for as long as it runs. Audi has really outdone themselves with this build and design, this B8.5 is arguably their peak engine/exterior design era. And I'm sure these cars will go up in value with time as they become more rare, so for those thinking of getting one do it now, I promise you won't regret it.

I have a 2013 RS5, and everything you say here is accurate. I got it because it checked a lot of boxes: ✅ Sporty yet elegant and timeless design ✅ Luxurious interior ✅ Pretty rare ✅ Fast as hell ✅ Reliable (with reg. maintenance) ✅ Practical for regular use ✅ Large trunk space ✅ Beautiful exhaust note ✅ Safe to drive in winter To most people it just looks like a common A5. But if you really know your Audis, you know this is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

That's exactly how I feel about my 4.2 allroad, only just over 2000 were made in the 05 model year. Chains and guides are done plus a bunch of other stuff. Shortly it'll transition from daily driver to full restoration and Sunday show car status. 6 speed swap (planned) and a full color change, I'm thinking of an audi race livery. Who knows ,it'll probably take me 15 years to complete as projects of love are never truly finished. Take care, save them old audis. @@chesspiece81 I’ve now had mine since 2018. Ownership has been fantastic. I’ve stuck to proper servicing schedules which has resulted in no unexpected expensive repairs. What I’m intending doing is a front resinator delete on the two exhaust downpipes. I’ve a factory sports exhaust but still feel it’s a little on the quiet side. I’m also wanting to install retrofit apple car play. The character of the car is the sound of the engine and what an engine it is. This one revs to a dizzy 8.5k - it’s a coupe that makes you ‘drive’ the car.

@@chesspiece81 I wouldn’t supercharge mine as it’s enough power to scare me. I’ve never owned a motor before that’s made me shake after a spirited drive. My advice would be, if it’s the last of the N/A V8’s you want - just get one because they stopped production of them in 2015 whilst they developed the B9 2.9 Turbo. The V8 Lamborghini engine is last of a kind and I bet you’d enjoy it as much as I do.

I appreciate the time and effort you put into this, but wanted to offer some corrections. Yes, I'm the 'Actually' guy today. I'll be paraphrasing, but on the S8 review, you said that this model and engine played the biggest role in saving Audi. Although it is a great car, it didn't do anything to save Audi. First, it was sold in way too few of numbers to save anything. Second, Audi had already been saved by this point. And the cars that saved them were the B5 A4 and the C4 A6/S6, as well as the B4 80 and C4 100/S4. The D2 A8 came later and still wasn't sold in very large numbers. Not only that, but Audi was still selling plenty of cars outside of the US. They weren't at risk of going under, they were only losing sales in the US after the 60 minutes scam. The engine that 'saved' Audi was the reliable, stout 2.8 12v V6 and the inline turbocharged 5 cylinder that was in the 200/S4/S6. You also mentioned that Audi hadn't done anything between the Audi V8 and the D2 A8/S8, a gap of 13 years or so I think you said. That's just not accurate. The D2 was planned in the early '80s and was released in the rest of the world as the A8 as a 1994 model year. Several years before it was released in the US. Once Audi had stabilized a bit due to the success of the B series and C series chassis, it was released in the US. The S8 is actually on the tail-end of that run, not the beginning of it. You also mentioned that AWD didn't exist in sport models before the S8. That was kind of hard to hear and proves you might not know much about Audi. The original (Ur) quattro had AWD in the early '80s. Then to follow that was the Audi 200 which was their 'sport' version. Remember this is before their new naming convention of the '90s. The first S model was the C4 S4, also called UrS4. This was release in 1992, and guess what, it was AWD. That carried on to the C4 S6, which was still AWD. At the same time, Audi release the RS2 avant, but not in the USA. It was even a higher level of performance than the C4 S4 or 200. This was a sport model that was AWD. It wasn't until about 20 years later that the S8 was released as a sport model with AWD. If you want to research the S2 coupe (which wasn't available in the US), you might be surprised that was made over 30 years ago. You also mentioned that before the S8, Audi was a subsidiary of VW. Not quite. Go ahead and look up Audi's sales figures from the '80s before the 60 Minutes scam. There wasn't platform sharing or even engine sharing with the C chassis in the US. I could go on, but they shared more in the early 2000's with VW than in the 90's. Definitely not acting as a subsidiary. They had established themselves way before the S8 came along as a serious contender. You just didn't know about them yet, probably because you were in preschool. You said that they weren't able to compete with BMW 7 series and Mercedes S class. Yes that is true, but the reason is not quite what you think it is. It's because they weren't trying to compete in that segment until the D2 was released. But because you didn't know about the D2 being released earlier outside of the US than it was in the US, I can understand your confusion. But while you're at, take a look at some reviews of the C4 100/S4 and see where they fit into the puzzle. Not only was the C4 100 competing with Mercedes, the Acura Legend, and other well known cars of the era, it was even winning some of the head to heads. One of you said that all transmissions of that era were bad. Not quite. The tiptronic was a new type of transmission that was horrible. The previous 4 speed automatic ZF transmission in the C4/B4 were actually very responsive and reliable. Then when talking about the S6 you said that you have to go to '90s Japanese for that kind of reliability. Who told you that? The C4 generation is known for easily getting 300k miles without any issues. I hate to break it to you, but they are much better built than the C5's are as well. Then someone said that Audi had been pretty hell bent on automatic for sport variant. Umm no. I hope by now that is obviously wrong. The S8 and S6 were actually the FIRST sport models that Audi sold in the US that didn't come with a manual transmission as standard. In fact an automatic wasn't even an OPTION! Okay now that those few things are out of the way, it would have been great to hear more about the cars themselves. For example on the S6 review, you just kept saying how used and worn out the car was, but not much about the quality of the build. Since I have experience with 3 of the cars on your program, I'll answer that question. For some reason, the C5 generation of the A6/S6 is the worst built car Audi had made since the '80s. It was built to a budget, and it's obvious. Cheap plastic pieces that fall off of the interior, poorly designed headlights that turn signals melt holes in, cheap feeling dash, and a info display that wasn't even close to as durable as the C4 info display. However, C5's are comfortable and roomy. And it's good you reviewed the V8, because the C5 2.7T is an even bigger POS. The C5 hurt the Audi name more than ANY other car they made. Even B6's and B7's have a much better reputation. The C6 was a major improvement in some ways, but it wasn't until the C7 that Audi started to recover the C series reputation. Anyway, glad to have found your channel. Hopefully you found this factual information useful, or at least maybe your viewers will.

@ExhibitionofSpeed 2 жыл бұрын
Hey man! I appreciate the time and effort for the comment. Funny thing to address initially is I've actually owned a C5 S6, 200 20v avant and currently own a C4 S6, so I do have experience with those cars for sure. Alot of the things that were said are phrased in a way to paint a picture for an audience member that may have little to no info on these cars, which makes it easy to get lost in the weeds of the finer details. For example, it's true the D2 wasn't the first sporty awd vehicle for sure (ie your example of 200 and C4 S6), however to an individual outside of the Audi bubble it may as well have been as you're more likely to see one of those running around than a C4 S6 here in the states at least. Another example is the B5/C5/D2 Era having saved the brand. There's a lot of give and take here and probably more behind the scenes stuff that either of us will ever know, but suffice it to say that the sales numbers for that generation of the brand show the first major upward trend in years. I completely agree that the 200, 90 and S6 did a lot to undo the damage done by the 60 minutes bit, but that bridge wasn't really crossed from a sales perspective until the mid to late 90s. And as far as the C5 in particular goes, it's an interesting mixed bag for sure! I think there were a lot of backwards steps taken in that Era compared to others. A good friend of mine terms it as "Everything up until the C4 was made by the engineers. Everything C5 and later was made by the accountants". I feel that sums it up fairly well in that there was a notable drop in quality across the board compared to their previous generations. Own a C4 and having owned a 200 myself, I completely agree it is very evident that materials quality took a nosedive. Also my reference to automatics was specifically from this Era as, just like you pointed out, prior to this the manuals were abundant compared to the automatics all across the model range and there was a definite shift in the VW group as a whole to get Tiptronic into more cars from 996 Porsches all the way down to Passats. Sadly we can both agree that the generations prior to 5hp19 and 5hp24 Era were more reliable which definitely stained things a little. And as you pointed out a couple of times, these are also coming from someone who is from the states and our time line has always been a little different from others, thus why in the intro of the film we stated that these are the five most exciting models we got here in the states as there's sadly several others we didn't get, so most of my recollections and reflections are based on that and someone here. I do appreciate the comment as it outlines the difficulty we have as presenters attempting to present info to someone for the first time. If we go too far, we lose people's attention that are just learning about these cars. If we don't go far enough, we only scratch the surface and don't dig deep enough to give much meaning. It's a difficult balance and one that we are going to continue tweaking and have. -Justin

I remember first meeting Justin when I was in High School. He took my buddy for a canyon ride in the S6 and I joined them. Sitting in the back seat, flying through the canyons; at night. It was insane. That was pre-deer incident but even after I bet the car drove remarkably. I never drove Justin's, but I did drive my buddies C5 S6 and it has this charm that you just can't find in another vehicle from that era. It isn't the fastest, it isn't the most luxurious, and it isn't the most beautiful. But he gives you a connection that I feel a lot of cars from the early 2000's don't have. Even when I drove a E39 M5, it didn't charm me in the way the C5 S6 does and can. I crave driving that vehicle. And I think it all goes to that engine. That "little" 4.2 liter V8.

Remarkable video Mr Ronin, I love that BATTLE WAGON. I just yesterday completed the refurbishment and assembly of good S8 heads onto a C5 A6 block and installed into my D2 A8L. 11 of the valves were bent so I installed some from a Touareg and of course lapped them and changed the valve stem seals. Sadly I have low compression on cylinders 1 and 6 so perhaps should have verified leakage with gasoline or diesel fuel poured into combustion chambers even though zero light shone through any while closed. I will perform leakdown test soon to determine source of leakage. It is just MARVELOUS to see my gorgeous hometown of SL,UT and those fantastic winding canyon roads! I love my B8 2011 Audi s5 4.2 premium plus I’ve had this beauty since November 2022 I luckily got it for a steal just $15,000 for 78k miles… I know have just over 131k and I daily drive this thing all over CA and it’s been the best experience any car has ever gave me! Yes the maintenance may be a pain but you obviously have to know what you’re getting into before you purchase a car, only things I’ve need was new upper and lower control arms at around 105k I upgraded to the 034 for stiffer handling around the corners and its quite impressing how much it changed the whole handling with the car! I do have a muffler delete with and AWE exhaust and AWE intake. I love this car and plan to take this baby well over 200k miles.

I was gonna say... no mention of ASF and barely mentioned the S8's fame in the movie "Ronin". When I mentioned to my friends I was getting a D2 S8 they were all like "oh, the 'Ronin' car!" And yes, the 5HP transmission is the worst part of the car. It seemed less bad in my RS6 but in the S8, especially over 180k miles in my car, it's pretty lame.
@ExhibitionofSpeed
@ExhibitionofSpeed 3 жыл бұрын
So the funny part about the aluminum space frame is that we actually discussed it off camera and said "Oh yea, we should probably mention it at some point." And then it kinda slipped our minds after that. A bit of an oversight for sure. Aluminum being in the title is not about the ASF, but more so the aluminum engine block that the 4.2 is made of. Thanks for watching! -Gavin

The mk1 TT saved Audi’s ass here in Europe. I adored Audi the brand prior to the late 90’s and early 2000’s owning 5cld 20v turbo cars and V6’s. The phase 2 brand new S8 I drove at an Audi test day absolutely blew me away. Something delightful about the aluminium body rigidity and lightness coupled with that wonderful V8 that felt like nothing I had experienced before in a big luxury saloon. Fast forward to today I drive an alu body A8 executive sport, that has that inherent bloodline magic that D2 S8 had.

Glad you two like my car so much! I just bought a 2013 RS5 with 4,700 miles on it! Yes, you read that correctly! Icing on the cake? Hows about a 4 year 50K warranty from AUDI? Yeah got that too! So I got the chance to own a practically brand new and it is if you don't look at the 4,700 miles on the clock! The passenger seat and rear seats were never, ever sat in! I can tell this is a fact, trust me! It also came with a P3 Left Vent gauge. Which I think is really cool. Whom ever owned this prior had it installed. The car is in fact as brand new as anything else Brand "NEW" on the dealership floor! I could not believe my eyes! When I saw this I bought it without any hesitation! In fact I have fallin in love with this car. So much so I am going to pickle it! And buy a S5 with a DSG if they are available or a manual if not. I have seven cars, this is my Favorite, I also own a MINTY 2010 BMW M6 that I got back in 2013 with only 22,000 miles on it. It now has only 34,000 miles on it. I';m able to not drive it too much and able to keep this mileage very, very low. I also own an Audi A8L 2002 Black on Black. That car had 34,000 was a cpo and I paid like $32K at the time (2006 january thereof) I bought it I loved that car but it got into a legal case dispute that lasted 9 years! When I got the car back it was NOT in the pristine condition I last saw it, so back to court we go! GRRRR. I am keeping it if it's not destroyed mechanically. I left it with 98,000 and fresh just done timing belts at the time on 2012 when this whole legal nightmare began! Now it has 117,000. Anyways, that is how i came to love the Audi brand. Interesting channel. keep it up and grow. Look at that IDIOT Doug Demuro or whatever this duffus A** Clown name might really is! He is painful, you are getting much better, LOL Kidding! BTW, my brother has an RS6 with 60,000 LOW miles on it. We are starting a collection! LOOOL three so far! As I said mine it a time capsule, I am going to garage it this winter I cannot handle the idea of driving this in the snow! I just can't! I have two winter cars, the 2002 A8L once it is cleaned up and brought back to the same good perfect condition before the legal battle! Since that car is made out of Aluminum the whole thing! It will not rust and if washed weekly in the winter it never hurt it! That one has the 5 Valve (40 valve) V8 with 310 HP Quattro of course! Shipped it to Eastern Europe, where I lived for 8 years. Then shipped it back so I have lots of good memories with this car! Especially driving it on the Autobahn! Yeah really! Take care guys, keep it up!

As a b8.5 s4 driver with a neighbor/friend with the RS5, I think I’m gonna cash in the s4 and find an RS5. You really nailed it with this being the last generation of cars like this and I agree, one of the golden ages for German cars in general. Seeing an RS5 in 20 years is going to be a holy sh*t moment and this really summed up what a pivotal role the 4.2 played over the many generations. This really captured that recent + future nostalgia for the platform.

gents - a GREAT comparison of the same engine plant in different platforms. Nice level of detail and perspective of x vs y vs z etc., ... Of course ... I have to quibble the statement of RS4 being a HALO car along with R8 ... there's no doubting that the RS4 is an awesome weapon but the HALO car of that group is undoubtedly the RS6. Yes ... it's turbo / supercharged (depending on generation) and not naturally aspirated like the rest of your "study group" but that RS6 ... holy moly ... WHAT A BEAST. I took one for a test drive 4 years ago ... TOOO MUCH (admittedly it had been "tweaked"). I suspect you just couldn't get your hands on one for this comparison but (personally) the RS6 undoubtedly spanks it. That said, as an everydaydriver ... I'm not sold on it ... I'd rather drive a small car fast than a big car slow. However ... I have to agree with all of your comments on the RS5 ... I sat in a mate's about 6 years ago and OH .... MY ... GOD ... the sound on that was PHENOMENAL. The torque was pretty decent too. Keen to try a 4 door but not sure I'd want to do a long distance journey in it. Now... funnily enough ... my 2007 W164 Mercedes ML 63 AMG (6.3 litre v8 supertuned to the nuts to lug a 2.5 tonne 4x4 around) ON PAPER outperforms the Audi S4. But when I'm driving my B6 S4 it feels SOOOOO MUCH FASTER on acceleration. And the grip on corners is farrrrrrrr higher than the ML63. (Which disappoints me because, to be honest, I love the thought of "sleepers" ... which is what the S4 is ... as is the ML63). Not sure about top speed as I've never taken either of them there. But the S4 is a HELL OF A LOT MORE planted and confident. It just didn't fit my retired greyhound ... hence he had his own car :) I love them both - for different reasons: - The Mercedes ML63 ... the fact that a 2.5 tonne brick can accelerate and handle like that IS NUTS. But expect HIGH maintenance costs if you're going to drive it like a nutter. (CAVEAT: it's hard NOT to drive it like a nutter ... it. just. goes. Except past service stations. It drinks gas like crazy! 95 litre tank ... it's best just not to look at the receipt!) - B6 Audi S4 ... just so bloody capable. Yes, I'm not 24 anymore and have to stoop down to get into it ... but when I do, I remember that the only reason I have the ML63 is because I needed something that was physically big enough to fit the greyhound. Otherwise ... the RS6, beast as it is, is just too big, as is the ML63 ... for me the perfect size is the Audi x4 platform. I suspect the same goes for BMW drivers when choosing between the M3 and M5. Anywho - good review gents. If you're ever in New Zealand and need cars to drive for a shoot ... give me a shout. Or bikes, for that matter ... just holler and we'll hook you up :)

Definitely agree. Had one too. One of my favorite cars I’ve owned but the previous owner dogged it and the transmission went at like 80k miles. Finding a replacement manual transmission was nothing short of an expedition. Took me 4-5 months of scouring the internet everyday till I found one because they're so rare. Something to keep in mind if you plan on buying one.

I consider myself a true petrol head. Grew up with multiple JDM pearls (...B16, B18, K20) then dabbled in GDM (Audi 3.2 V6 Quattro DSG), loved my two years in 2018 Focus RS mk3. Finally decided that manual gearbox belongs to the museum. It was fun during the times the 200HP cars were considered fast. In modern cars it's just the biggest hindrance to the whole experience. Yes I would still enjoy manual in the oldschool Civic 1.6 but in something like S5/RS5/R8 V8/10 I would always go with DSG aaaand Quattro. It makes the real impact on the whole sporty experience. You can't even enjoy proper acceleration without a fast automatic gearbox, and IMHO the acceleration is the most fun part of the spirited driving, not the max speed. The second most important thing are of course the brakes. You can go as fast as your brakes allow you to, but those are decent in most high end car models. I wish more car manufacturers would allow us to enjoy fast DCTs

You make some valid points, but even with some higher horsepower cars (for sake of argument, 400+) that are still genuinely fun with a manual gearbox. 997 GT3, S550 Shelby GT350, Manual R8s, etc. Luckily, there are great automated boxes out there like DSG, PDK, and the Tremec DCT in the C8 Corvettes. Also, ZF did a great job with their 8-Speed auto like in the A90 Supra. Thanks for watching!

@@thomasbummer4361 it's not all about the speed. Have you driven one? Search what experts think about the 4.2 V8 in these RS4s. It's almost always listed as one of the best v8s ever. I've owned Corvette Z06, Lotus Elise, Camaro SS, Evo 9, BMW M3, S2000, and driven many other sport cars. The RS4 is the most balanced car I've ever owned. It's fast enough, the awd is awesome, the sound is unbeatable, the 4 door is great, the v8 is great, and the 6 speed is great. The fact that it doesn't look like a boy racer car is great too. To each their own... And the reason it's underrated is because there was only about 2000 imported here. The community size will never be that of the cars you listed.

Make sure to check your timing belt (yes it's still a belt with this car), keep an eye on how the transmission shifts and drives, and make sure the control arms are solid. The struts and springs are damn near bullet proof seeing how long they lasted on the car we tested. Congratulations on your acquisition and we wish that it gives you many years and many miles of happy Motoring. Thanks for watching!
@Jas6avant
@Jas6avant 2 жыл бұрын
@@ExhibitionofSpeed Thank you so much! Yes the car’s basically bulletproof so far, especially for its mileage. Mines an East coast car so rust on the struts and light leaking due to salt etc. so swapping to coil overs soon. Doing the belt and brakes soon but have been wondering recently what light mods do you think is a good upgrade outside of the manual swap for more power? About the arms can I just replace ball joint etc.? Or do I have to do the whole arm?
@ExhibitionofSpeed
@ExhibitionofSpeed 2 жыл бұрын
You're going to have to do the whole arm. As far as power is concerned, there's not a lot to do. An S8 cam and a tune will get you all of 30hp, and out the door a supercharger will cost around 15k and get you not even 100hp. Just make it sound nice, swap the trans for a manual, and enjoy.

1:10:34 - I owned that 4.2L v8 RS5 (2013 model) for a few years with the “dynamic” (fixed/sport) suspension. I knew it was special w/ that high revving engine and the dual clutch transmission. I eventually got (and then tuned) a 2019 TT RS after that. I missed the RS5 once I sold it, so I had to go back to Audi Sport with something else similarly as special and interesting (now a 5 cylinder turbo charged, not naturally aspirated though). Tuned up to ~455hp though and still has dual clutch transmission, so it sounds and feels great (also lowering springs, locked down the drive line, etc). 😅
