Hello good fine people out here in the internet wilderness. I have a similar engine in my 2013 A3 1.4T Sportback. I've had it 4 years now and in the beginning I was concerned about the startup rattle noise that then dies down. I then first, scoured through internet resources then technical manuals and finally my good old mechanic friend. There's nothing to be worried about. The sound is the the engine trying to get the oil pressure up to optimum levels. Thus, several components that need oil pressure to work without noise in the valve-train will make some nosie in the process. While this takes place, you'll notice the RPM start at around 1,100 - 1,200rpm. They then slowy drop down to around 900rpm as the noise disappears. It's not catastrophic but always, do your regular maintenance. That is ensuring there's enough quality oil. Not too Much not too little. Moreover, understand your engine, proactively look out for any anomalies and timely replace what needs to be replaced on time. In those four years, I've not had any issues. I should however point that the only major component replacement I've done is that of various bushings in the suspension as well engine and transmission mounts. Of course theres the usual regualr maintenance of consumable substances and replacement parts. Regards.

Is that rattle on start up normal? My car does the exact same - it rattles on start up then does after 2 seconds?

Hi, I know this is an old comment, but just in case you’re still wondering by any chance: I have one of these cars as well and it makes the same noise on startup. I’ve been reliably informed that it’s just the tappets making that sound and it’s no cause for concern. Apparently they are self-adjusting tappets that use hydraulic pressure, so in the first couple of seconds after a cold start there isn’t enough oil pressure for them to work silently, so they make that tapping/rattle sound, then once the oil pressure rises they settle down and go quiet. But it’s considered normal. I hope that helps!

@@jal2381997 Unbelievable that I stumped on your comment just 1 day later. I had the same question like the first guy, since my A3 FSI does the rattling on startup. If it's no point of concern now though, couldn't it create a problem in the future? I mean it does sound kind of rough few times (which is totally random). I keep getting pressured by my buddies/co-workers to replace the whole timing chain kit, because they say that sound isn't normal from the factory and it can obviously destroy my engine if it breaks the chain. But most info online says the 1-2 sec rattling on start doesn't pose a problem. *I don't know what to believe* 😅😅😆

@@John_Stur mine needed the timing chain doing too. The main difference is how quickly the noise quietens down. If it’s literally just a couple of seconds and then it stops then it’s likely the tappets, but if it keeps going for a while I would get your timing chain checked by a specialist. On mine, it was quite apparent because it continued rattling even as I drove along for about 5 minutes or more. If in doubt, it’d probably be best to get it checked. Hope that helps. : )

@@jal2381997 Thanks for your response. Its a hit and miss noise, so sometimes it makes a rattle and sometimes it doesnt. Other times it rattles really hard but i dont think it has caused any underlying issues yet. Been driving it for about 4 months now and no issues hopefully. Thanks again!

Ja wymienilem pompę oleju rozrząd wariator i łańcuch i jest to po prostu wadą tego silnika nowy osprzęt to samo zachowanie... Odpal auto zgaś i zapał po 2-3 sekundach i nie ma falowania ani wariator nie buczy. A jak to ogólnie zniwelować nawet mój mechanik nie wie bo wszystkie punkty które to miały powodować są nowe 🤦
