• P0016 VW 1.4tsi Timing... another timing chain failure on the 1.4TSI.
A video showing how to replace the timing chain on a ea111 1.4tsi. This MK5 Golf GT came in running rough and had a P3008 fault code logged for the G40 camshaft sensor - signal out of range. I tested the cam sensor wiring and had a 5 volt reference, and a square wave hall sensor switching 5v down to 0v tested on a PICO oscilloscope, and a good earth. So the cam sensor is working ok. I checked the timing with the locking tools and found both cams to be advanced in relation to the crankshaft timing. This confirmed our suspicions of a timing problem. I stripped down the timing cover and found a stretched timing chain. The chain was so stretched that the tensioner allowed the chain to jump on the crank (the cams were in time to one another still). The timing chain, tensioner, and guides were replaced and the issue rectified.

Hi, when I opened the timing chain cover/housing then found timing chain was almost off the exhaust sprocket. Tensioner was fully released, timing chain almost touching in the middle at guides. One of the screws was lying at bottom of chain housing, bolt smashed, suffered blows from chain, pulleys etc. Do new timing chain to install. Most importantly, best way to achieve TDC is by TDC gauge. It’s more accurate than “drop screw in cylinder” method, and through piston stop tool. I have also removed sump so when it cylinder1 was at TDC, I checked crank shaft lobes from underneath , they were parallel to ground and locking tool goes straight into side of crank lobes. Hope that helps if somebody else is in same situation as me.
@ssss-df5qz
@ssss-df5qz Жыл бұрын
there's a locking pin for TDC on the back though. The gauge as far as I'm aware is to "check" the timing chain easily and is utterly pointless to use in the actual timing of the engine. The difference between TDC on the gauge and TDC on the crank lock pin is literally a fag paper. If you were there trying to keep dead TDC on the gauge you'd have a right headache.

Hy Daniel! It's been 3 years now, do you still have the car? How is the engine and what's your opinion, I just bought a second hand 150000 miles on dash VW Touran with the 1.4 bmy and I'm quite concerned about its reliability. My car has a dsg6 automatic gearbox, I dive like am old man, would last a long time of I look after it changing the oils, filters and timing chain in time? Cheers!

@@soareandrei6504 DSG 6 is very good. Just change the gearbox oil at a workshop that has done it before. The engine is not reliable. I still have it and love it, but it is very fragile. Change the engine oil to 5W30 Castrol LL (504/507.000) at MAX 10.000km... I still drive it, but a lot can go wrong on these. If you change the timing chain, then to a complete change. Also the timing gears, rails and check the other chain to the oil pump. A full original set from VW with everything is about €900-1000 for the parts, but it has every thing for a complete timing chain change. The water pump drives the supercharger, so if that breaks it is about €500 for the part alone + labour. Spark plugs and coils are not the best either, but I keep mine.

Absolute beauty this video/tutorial! Please i have a 1.4 FSI, AXU, 2005, 16V, no variator, 60k miles. No error on vcds or dashboard. After the car sits for more then 3 weeks, only at first key it rattles. Please 3 questions: 1)beeing a fsi, and everybody changes at 200k, it could be only the tensioner? 2)i saw on 1.4 tsi CAXA that has a revised tensioner. Yours(oem) is the old one, and is strange that they(the shop) didnt provide you the upgraded one. I m i wrong? Should i buy the revised one or stay with the classic oem(because i am an old fsi)? 3)from what i ve read on fsi it could be olso the camshaft axe worn out and nothing on the timing. What do you think? My logic, is that after i have the first key, in that day or the next seven, it has no noise, or only a fraction of a second in the seventh. So the tensioner it still holds some oil and you can think that there is no oil in the camshafts(longer periods of time). Thanks in advance!

@Four Rings Auto I have a Golf GT 1.4 tsi with the BLG engine, and the P3008 code poped up. The car is at 200K km right now, and the timing chain was replaced at a VW dealer along with a engine rebuild at 130K km. The oil is change every 15k/10K km intervals. I can hear the chain rattle, so my question is how long should a chain last? And is there some regular maintenance that i should have done so that the chain last more than 70K km, like change chain guides and tensioner. Also since the sprockets were changed fairly recently is it ok the change just the chain, tensioner and chain guides. Many thanks in advance, I could find much helpful information on these engines and your videos really help.

Hi, nice video, thanks. How to check timing without dismantling timing chain cover? Because on this model full cover need to be removed to access chain. Can I do it by removing camshaft cover plates and check whether both camshaft in certain specified angle to fit the camshaft tool properly? If both camshaft holes are as specified in repair manual (45 degree) then does this means timing is fine? Look to your reply,
@FourRingsAuto

Yes that is correct. Remove the plugs at the gearbox end of the engine, and remove the spark plug from cylinder 1 and check it's at TDC.

Four Rings Auto thanks, I will check , actually I m having starting issue, no engine code , spark plugs gets wet instantly. While cranking oil pressure light also starts blinking. I removed sump to check oil pick up tube, which is fine, now will change oil level sensor & oil pressure sensor too. I was told that car goes in fail safe mode if oil pressure is low, and Computer doesn’t let car start. I will check timing after changing sensors. How to find TDC? Can I do it by putting long screw driver in cylinder 1 and turn crank clock wise to find top high position of screw driver? Or should use compression gauge to find TDC? Thanks for your reply.

Do a compression test also though if your spark plugs are wet with fuel. This can be either an ignition problem or compression. Check to see if you have spark.

Four Rings Auto thanks. I Did compression test after drying cylinders out, it goes over 200 psi in each cylinder. I also did fuel, sparks, etc, all fine. Cylinder gets flooded heavily upon cranking. I can see fuel on top of cylinder after removing plugs. Which one is cylinder 1? Is it nearest to crankshaft pulley/timing chain side or the one near to battery/ gearbox? There is another video of a German guy who changed chain on this particular model (1.4 tsi 170 bhp golf mk5), but he used cylinder nearest to timing chain to find TDC rather than far right cylinder? Appreciate you time & help. Regards

Even if you're rarely driving it the engine oil (and filter) should be replaced every year at an absolute minimum. I wouldn't bother changing the chain/tensioner if it's not rattling or making unusual noises but like I said, service the car regularly as the tensioner relies on oil pressure and old/poor quality oil is a common cause of chain failure. PS Go for a decent drive and give the car a good rev every so often once its up to temp, short distance driving is terrible for these d.i. cars

Yes, it is a common issue that they can rattle worse after an oil change or even jump time. The tensioner can drain out and the engine is run with an empty filter that takes at least 5 seconds to 10 seconds to prime. So if your car was bad prior to changing the oil, there's a good chance it may have jumped when the engine started with no oil pressure for that brief period. Chains generally jump when cranking.

Can check the timing with either an oscilloscope and a competent user, or set the number 1 piston at tdc via the spark plug hole, and take out the plastic caps on the rear end (gearbox end) of the camshaft housing. Then see if the tool fits or not. Make sure it is on the correct tdc, if the tool is no where near fitting it'll tell you the timing has jumped.

How did you adjust cam shafts to get locking tool in when it was out of time? I had head off and therefore cam cover out with cams. Before reinstalling cam cover put engine to TDC on 1, crank pin in and lock tool in cams. I want to adjust cams position as tool bit hard to get in and out but don’t want to undo sprocket bolts.

I fit the tool before refitting the cam box.
@FourRingsAuto
@FourRingsAuto 3 жыл бұрын
If the tool is hard to get in, you have to undo the cam sprocket bolts. That's why in the instructions and in the video, it says to only torque the bolts to the nm amount, rotated the engine and recheck if the tool fits easily. Then carry out the stretching of the bolts. It is ok to loosen the bolts if the stretch procedure hasn't been carried out yet.

@@FourRingsAuto ok thanks. Yeh I put lock tool into cam box prior to fitting but since removing tool, cam alignment is off ever so slightly. Is it possible to remove chain and turn cam shafts independently? (With engine crank pin in for tdc no1)

Hi, nice video, you made it look very simple! I'm motivated to do this on mine, it rattles on cold starts like an assault riffle but wasn't sure if it was the variator or the timing chain, want to ask a couple of questions. Is it necessary to change the variator, or is it something that will suppousedly last as much as the car? And for the gasket, what do you do for the bottom part? (The one that matches the oil pan) do you use gasket silicone? (or whatever is it called)

@@FourRingsAuto Another question, I can see a kit from INA (Schaeffler) -559 0154 30- with EVERYTHING needed, however, as in this video, the tensioner has the same reference as the one that came from the factory with the car, and in this video I can see that it retracts back, Isn't it supposed to stay out to compensate the chain's stretch? Also, was the problem of the camshafts out of time because of tensioner or the chain? Sorry to bother you, but it looks to me that it will only keep the car running fine for a while until the tensioner/chain fails again soon

Hi, how far can the timing chain stretch before valves hit the pistons? and is there a known Fault on the mechanical fuel pump Failing and then flush fuel into the oil?
@FourRingsAuto
@FourRingsAuto 5 жыл бұрын
It will jump and hit valves with a stretched chain rather than the chain be stretched enough alone for the timing to go that far out. This one had jumped on the crank it seems, as both cams were in time with one another still. You are correct with hpfp failure lime that, more seen on the fsi v8 and v10. Fuel injector leakage will also result in fuel in the oil. Any form of rich condition repair should have the oil changed afterwards.

A fine and helpful clip but you are taking liberties ( and not doing the job properly imo ) by not removing the sump. You'll know well the sump adds a lot of work and time to the job( especially those awkward two rear bolts ) but at least then you can change the crank sprocket and less likelyhood of an oil leak on reassembly test.

Has anyone actually tried to see if it could jump teeth (16:35)? I did! with all components changed, when the tensioner is fully in there is still enough slack in the chain to jump a tooth if the engine turns backwards by 70 or so degrees. Then I wondered what could turn it back with a DSG box, engine is free enough to "bounce" on compression, and also the cams can turn it backwards in one position. Flick the crankshaft forward and it jumps back enough to jump a tooth, although it did not actually jump, it can! How can VW design a beautiful engine like this but with this issue! kzbin.info/www/bejne/iovUmKtqnJajo6M

Hi guys, great work and thanks for the video The chain on my 2011 1.4 tsi Golf 6 (130.000km) is starting to get noisy on cold start and it's getting worse day by day. Changing the chain might not be a problem for me, but timing the engine seems complicated and I didn't understand all the steps (english isn't my native language) Is it really necessary to change all the gears even if they don't seem damaged ? Thanks for explaining which way is up thanks. Just about finishing rebuilding a 1.4 tsi cave code. pistons like you had. And fitting revised injectors.

Glad I could help mate! The best way to fill them is with a tool that can pull a vacuum on the system, which pulls all the radiator hoses flat. The vacuum in the system then pulls the water and coolant in with no air locks. But to be honest, these engines are pretty good at bleeding themselves. Just pour your mix into the coolant resevoir, and start the engine with the cap off the resevoir. Run the engine until up to operating temperature with the heater switched on to High (maximum heat). Keep topping the level up whilst the engine warms up, keeping the bottle full. Once the radiator has cycled on and off, take it for a drive. Let the engine cool and recheck the level. Top up where necessary.

@FourRingsAuto
@FourRingsAuto 2 жыл бұрын
These engines crack pistons. Either do a compression test, or disconnect the coil packs and crank the engine and listen to how it cranks. Low compression on 1 cylinder will make the engine cranking sound uneven as it'll speed up on the cylinder with low compression due to less resistance on the starter.
