Absolute genius! Same problem on 3.0 V6, 04120 code on bank 2. A very simple solution (which are often the best) but huge respect for coming up with the idea in the first place, well thought out, logical and well explained. The main plastic gear wheel inside the unit can be very brittle (mine's 17 years old now) so be very careful when you're drilling for the screw, mine started to split a little so I filled the voids around the screw with epoxy resin. Thanks a million!!

I think that was the best diagnosis and ingenious mechanical repair video I've seen, well done! thanks so much. My 2015 q7 3.0 gasoline was just in the shop for pvc/oil separator replacement $$ and now show flap position error. I did see n the internet a quick fix being sold for this problem. very similar to yours but the "stop" was with a externally mounted metal bracket. remove the top two screws, hold up the flap actuator arm and insert the stop, is held on by the two top screws. thanks again

Excellent video! I have the same car as this which had a similar problem at the same milage is this one, it was a bit of a difficult one to diagnose! it turns out The ECU works out a fault on the intake manifold runner system because it looks for an 89%efficient working of the system anything out of this range and it flags up The EML light as the actuator motor Will be travelling up and down out of its normal parameters, The worn swirl flap bearings cause the lever arm to have excessive slackness, I rectified this by replacing the swirl flap Rods/bearings it's quite a straightforward job for a competent as the manifolds will need to be removed the repair kit is available for around £60 per manifolds. Imsvvavr is a very competent guy watch all his videos and you will learn a lot I'm very impressed with most of his videos and it's really good of him to take time and effortgoing out of his way to show us his skills ! @@LMAutoRepairs I decided that, whilst waiting for my new flaps and actuators, I should try your trick. I actually noticed that I didn't need to measure anything because my actuator is identical to the one you worked on. I drilled and placed the screw in the same position as yours. Bam ... nailed it, fault went passive immediately. Solved my year long irritation I must say, I didn't realise how small a drill bit I needed until I started working on it. You can't force the screw in without drilling a hole and you can't use a wrong size bit otherwise you can destroy the wheel. In the end, it was an easy task to follow, thanks to you😁. Would you explain a bit more about PASSIVE TO ACTIVE (fix confirmed) in the scanner ?
@LMAutoRepairs6 жыл бұрын
Jason Kim Hi No worries... I believe you are referring to the fault codes, being active or passive... Active, means the code/fault is present, when the ecu does the checks, or found a problem with that system... Passive, means that the ecu no longer sees a problem in there, it saw a problem before, but not anymore... When you clear the faults, the passive faults will clear, because as I said they are not present, all the active ones will stay... Don't know if that makes sense... Hope so...
@brendanmcgorisk71616 жыл бұрын
I love the fact that you came up with such a good idea for repair but can you be sure the problem is with the control motor? It could be worn bushings/rod that the swirl flaps rotate on. That will throw up the same fault code. I'm getting the fault code of lower limit not reached for bank 2 and after replacing the control motor and actuator arm for new items, the fault code remains. That can only leave the swirl flaps as the culprit. Could it be the same problem on the car you worked on?
@LMAutoRepairs6 жыл бұрын
Brendan McGorisk Hi You actually nailed it! The problem is not the actuator... Is everything else that worns out and let's the actuator to move more than what is expected by the ecu... Theoretically, you need to change the entire manifold... All I have done here, was preventing the actuator to move over the limits... So, most likely you are suffering from the same problem... Hope that helps. Thank you for watching!
@brendanmcgorisk71616 жыл бұрын
LM Auto Repairs - your video was really helpful to me. I've found a pair of manifolds online for £199 which I'm considering buying - rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F332616287882 - would you think they're any good or sub standard? How much would you charge a customer for fitting those? Where do you work from?
@LMAutoRepairs6 жыл бұрын
Hi They are aftermarket, so it what it is... if you know what I mean... Those new manifolds will or should sort your problem, the thing is, as the shaft starts to worn, the problem will return... it will might take a few thousand miles, or a few years... If your manifolds and swirl flaps are good, what I have done is a good way of fixing your problem... If you don't bother, you can also consider this: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Repair-Bracket-for-Plastic-Intake-Manifold-03L129711AG-03L129086-P2015-Fault/382050600467?fits=Car+Make%3AAudi&epid=786093839&hash=item58f3fd8613:g:mEQAAOSwCmZZSQTk These are fitted on the outside, and they limit the arm movement... the same as I did, but on the outside. There is a few hours labour to remove and install the new manifolds, plus gaskets and/or seals that might need replacing... I am in Peterborough...
@brendanmcgorisk71616 жыл бұрын
LM Auto Repairs - I used to live in Leicester until 2 years ago and would have taken my car to you to get this sorted but I'm now living in Somerset. With that bracket fitted or with the fix you've done, am I right in thinking that the swirl flaps still won't be operating as they should be? Does the bracket just fool the ECU into thinking the rod and flaps are working properly? Do you think that bracket will fit the 3.0 TDI engine? It says it's for the 2.0 TDI common rail engine. I've found one specifically for the 3.0 engine but it's £90...which is more expensive than the swirl flap and bushing repair kits that can be bought on eBay.
@LMAutoRepairs6 жыл бұрын
With my fix, or with the bracket, the swirl flap work as normal... the only thing it does, is that prevents the actuator lever to move out of the specs, which happens due to the wear and tear of the swirl flaps components in the manifold. It is your decision Brendan, how much you are willing to spend etc... Consider to support my channel and all the hard work put into it at www.patreon.com/LMAutoRepairs Thank you

I saw on eBay you can buy for £23 an flap actuator repair kit from Poland. This provides, allegedly, a better quality set of gears for the inside of the actuators that don't wear out like the oem ones tend to do. Have you heard of these? If so, can a non mechanic, without your diagnostic machine, fit them and make the engine light turn off. A local garage has quoted me £2k to fix this problem. I suspect they're preparing to rip me of like most garages do.
@LMAutoRepairs4 жыл бұрын
That will be a waste of money... the problem on these has nothing to do with the gears inside... is the actually wear of the linkage outside and the flaps shaft itself... Thank you for watching!

@LMAutoRepairs4 жыл бұрын
@@wightwalker2453 Should do indeed... hope you have replaced the intake manifolds, or repaired the swirl flaps bearings... this last, is what actually causes this faults, the excessive play, allows the actuator to move too much, triggering the fault... that's why I sayd earlier, this issue has nothing to do with the actuator gears... as also explained in the video... Obviously you can have issues with the actuators... usually that is not the issue... 👍👍👍
