This is the newest EV from Audi, and it’s called teh Q4 eTron so I’ll bet you can guess exactly where it slots in the lineup. So thanks to Audi Milwaukee for letting me have a go
Q4 eTron…that’s probably the first time that i’ve heard the name of an electric Audi and gone “yep, I know exactly what that is”
And just like you’d expect, this Q4 eTron slots above the Q3 but below the Q5 in size which makes a lot of sense since the Q5 has always been a touch bigger than rivals like the BMW X3 and the Mercedes GLC
I think Audi will sell a bunch of these Q4s
They’re the right size
And more importantly, they’re te right price
The Q5 starts at $54,000 which is $4,000 LESS than a Tesla model Y. Full transparency this speccd out Prestige trim is 64,000…which is a couple grand over the Tesla Model Y Performance
And if I’m honest, this doesn’t exactly give you Model Y fighting figures
Sure it’s dual motor, but max power is 300 hp
0-60 is 5.8 seconds
And range…well that’s 240 miles
So this Q4 then shines in Premium or Premium Plus trim with some boxes left unticked. However, yanno another thing Teslas do that Audis dont? Fall apart.
This FEELS like a luxury car
This FEELS like an Audi
The build quality is there
There are no creaks or rattles
My windows go up AND down every time I ask them to
And not to mention, I’d rather be sat here over the inside of anything in Tesla’s range
The Q4 genuinely does feel better screwed together. It feels substantial and it feels familiar. You can roll on the power and feel it build like an internal combustion car. There are genuine differences between the drive modes and how they effect the manners of the car. And the ride and cabin isolation is exactly what you’d expect from the 4 rings
All that is basically to say, this Q4 won’t grab the crazy EV headlines we’re used to seeing, but it drives like something we’re used to driving.
It’s nice, it’s easy, and it’s just kinda faultless
So with that, let’s step outside
The Audi Q4 eTron is the first eTron to bear a conventional Audi naming convention
It’s sized between, you guessed it the Q3 and Q5
But it’s all EV all the time, no hybrid, no gas
This rides on the same chassis as the VW ID4
This one comes standard with the dual motor AWD
300 hp
240 mile range
Starts at 54k, this one is 64 as tested
Model Y STARTS at 68k
Lets talk looks
Like most modern Audis the design is thoroughly modern
With a focus on the lighting features
In this white it reminds me of the RSQ8 they have at IA
Grille is just design
No frunk
Some cooling below grille
Prestige has dual 5 spoke wheels
20 in
Bridgestone tires
Puddle lights
From profile it’s very ID4 shaped
But looks SO much better than the VW
Slightly flared rear hip
Taillights are so cool
It’s not super shouty about being EV
Etron on back bumper
Trunk is nice size, no frunk
White with brown interior is a nice spec
Decent rear seat space for being smaller than the Q5
Flat floor
No sunshades, no heated rear seats
Ambient light, rear climate
Pano roof
Auto start the car when you sit down and put foot on the brake
Auto turn off when you are stopped and open the door
Don't even need to put it in park
Very geometric cabin
LOTS of piano black
LOTS of sliders
Volume
Steering wheel
Sunroof
Steering wheel is weird shape
With all the uber modern stuff the infotainment is refreshingly familiar
Virtual cockpit is the best in the game
Prestige trim gets AR navigation in HUD
360 cameras
Heated seats heated steering wheel
No cooled seats

Q4 and tesla is not a even a luxury brand or a audi rival. Plus q4 is miles better than the overrated tesla lol.

Q4 all the way. Just because Tesla charges a premium for their vehicles does not make them premium vehicles. Quality wise they are no better than Ford or GM products.

I have an Audi Q4 and a Tesla Model Y and both have pro and cons, but if I would have to pick just one I would choose the Tesla though. Model Y has significantly more space, better consumption, it drives better, charging infrastructure is better, the display is big and works very smooth, the seats are very plush and comfortable. Audi is robust, very maneuver in town due to low turning circles, good suspension, very well soundproof and a smoother “autopilot”.

very thorough review! thanks! question-thinking of buying the audi Q4 etron but wont be stored in a garage will be outside in Texas weather. Will this impact the efficiency in any capacity? or is Audi build quality strong enough to withstand this?

It's one year over and 30000 km with my Q4 40 SB. I'm still happy with and is very usefull for every day use and still most beautifull car on the road..

I agree with your summary. I prefer the fit and finish of the Audi over Tesla. Not interested in racing from stoplights. I dont want all the issues and service problems with their cars. Once Tesla opens up their charging network to other brands they will lose their main advantage.

Q5 is actually the smallest among X3 and GLC. X3 is the biggest, then comes the GLC and Q5 at last.

Tesla Y is a step above because you can get that third row in the back for kids that you cannot get with the Audi. That is the main frustration we are finding with looking for a EV is needing a third now (it doesn't have to be big) and we keep getting drawn to the Tesla Y with the third row. I would love to have a third row option for Audi or even the VW ID4, but for some reason they just keep making more 5-passenger EVs

No question the audi is more luxurious, But they are slower, less range and way more expensive now than the y with their price cuts and gov rebate, I bought the Y for those reasons,

Reviewer: this car is great! Mainly because it's not a Tesla! All it's specs are inferior to the Tesla model Y but at least the build quality is better! Also, I like that its not too advanced! It appeals to my fear of the unknown and my nostalgia of ICE vehicles that are slow to accelerate and equipped with basic, tired looking UI so I can feel right at home and not even feel like I'm driving an EV! Even better, the e-tron badging is subtle so I don't have to feel the cognitive dissonance every day that I bought an EV but don't actually want an EV but rather an ICE vehicle.

Cant compare any other car to Tesla. The charging network and tech prowess is enough to justify the sales figures.. U cant expect the luxury from an Audi car to be any-less. Thats all they have going for them.

Audi q4 etron is better than the tesla in everyway . Audi has better quality luxury comfort exterior design interior design more than enough performance and range .remember this audi will outperform its epa numbers while tesla do less in real life.

I agree with that statement for most Audi’s but not this one, the cheap piano black everywhere and hard plastic is really a let down for a lot of people and most car journalists in europe and especially Germany have pointed that out. They went a little cheap on this model on the interior quality and that’s a shame (not to mention the 240 miles range). I had high hopes for this model but I think I’ll wait for the refreshed version which hopefully will have better interior quality and an increased range. The exterior styling is great tho.

@@Oklm23 Who cares what car journalists say? Yes, too much cheap plastic, very embarrassing for Audi. But optically it looks good and who knocks the dashboard and the doors of their cars... By the way, it doesn't get any more sober and boring than the board and a 14 inch display in front of the nose like in the Teslas. I picked up our Q4 e-tron 45 quattro from the factory four weeks ago and I'm simply thrilled with this car. It is whisper quiet, has an impressive driving comfort and is far superior to Elon Musk's rattles. Believe it or not, there are honest Tesla drivers who have nothing good to say about their cars. @@panibodo I get why they built it that way, though. If it's the same price as the Y, then it's a serious no-brainer for almost every upper-middle class buyer who will simply fly if it's more than about 250 miles from home. And, yes, the Model S is nice. The Y? Austere and feel like it'll break if you lean on it too hard. It is basically a 25K car with a fancy battery and motor (and a lot of markup) and the Audi is a 45K car with a decent motor and battery. 0-60 in 5.8 seconds is how fast my Mustang goes and how fast the best sports cars from the 90s went. (M3 or similar) It's plenty quick in traffic and easily goes faster than 90% of IC cars around it due to not having to shift gears. It never feels like it's going slow and that's all you need in a car you drive every day. Racing a model Y to show off will simply get you more tickets. Not actually get you across town faster.
