Subaru is more effective in these tests because they use abs braking to the spinning wheels, the audi doesn't have that and only has the mechanical lsd which isn't very effective for these tests. The subaru has an open diff which you can see highlighted with both wheels on one side spinning. 0:44 They both spin a ton until the abs braking slows them to transfer the torque to the other side. Still, I would've thought the audi LSD would be more effective. Maybe under real driving conditions(ie just snow, rain, ice it has enough torque that it doesn't matter?).

TBH Audi's quattro is as good as Subaru's, it's all the fake and shitty toggle on slip systems in FWD Crossovers and Suvs that lie about having actualy all wheel drive. Everyone else beyond Subaru, Audi, BMW and hardcore offroading vehicles makes these fake shitty systems that are FWD until you are already sliding but not always. Its both safer and more fun with actual 4WD/AWD than these glorified FWD cars prentedning to be AWD. Even if it works correctly they make cars unpredictable and prone to loosing control just because how sudden torque steer followed by brief toggle of rear drive can be.

All 3 are good, and infinetly better than whole sea of useless and pitiful pseudo-"AWD" systems everyone else uses. Half of which dont work at all and are there for people to buy false security and others work badly toggling only you're already in a slide combined with torque steer and sudden engamegement of these, which can only make it worse if driver dont know how to drive that well to begin with. Only proper choices are Torsen, Halex or Symmetrical-AWD from Subie well and ofc hardcore 4x4 drivetrains in pure offroad cars, but that is obvious. Well and Suzuki still makes decent AWD systems, but they seem to go more to simple copycat pseudo-AWD in their newest crossovers, so its just a left over of their good selves from 2000s and prior.

If somebody else slides into my parked car at 15-20MPH and takes off, I'd rather have a cheaper repair/replacement. The Subie also has a decent/improving aftermarket for offroad goodies, like winchmounts, diff-lockers, suspension lifts, skids, etc. It's probably a less stressful vehicle to own, and capable of legal fun.

I think the issue with Crosstrek and CVT is that its good, but when you need that torque because its driven by belt type system there is slippage vs mechanical where there isn't. So CVT can be weak in that regard when you eagerly need the tranny to provide that torque and power but it doesn't want to.

Not really, especially in the first test where one axle is placed on rolls on one is not you can clearly see that Audi seems to be using all open diffs and hence the axle on the rolls keeps spinning and the Audi barely makes it off the rolls. Subaru uses a center locking or limited slip diff and hence the Subaru gets of the rolls imminently.
@Trades46
@Trades46 6 жыл бұрын
Mechanical system vs. electronic system. Different implementation but the end result is similar. While it may seem the Subaru system reacts faster, it may also catch drivers by surprise if the system intervenes in the middle of a turn. This is why the Impreza STI has its own unique mechanical AWD system similar to Audi's quattro as the 'slower reacting' system is more predictable.
@SufferingAddict88
@SufferingAddict88 6 жыл бұрын
I don't really know much about Audis system (read: I don't know shit about it), I just interpreted what I saw in the video. To me it looked a bit as if the Audi only came of the rolls due to finding some traction on the rolls rather than due to power transfer to the front wheels. If this is in fact an electronically controlled system that I would say it's reacting way to slowly. Regarding the Sti (btw. just to be nit-picky it stopped being "Impreza" quite a while ago, now it's just called WRX Sti): The system reacts pretty much instantly. It has limited slip diffs front and back (although different types) and one limited slip diff in the center as one as an electronic one in the center with clutch packs so that the driver can adjust the default power split. I would say "intervene" is the wrong choice of word with such a system, it simply puts the power wherever the grip is due to the mechanical set up. So in the test in this video where only one wheel is on the ground and the others on those rolls you would likely get of the rolls almost immediately.
@SufferingAddict88
@SufferingAddict88 6 жыл бұрын
edit: so I just informed myself a tiny bit on the quattro system and according to Audi it switches to front wheel drive as default and only activates the rear if needed. But it claims to do so in just milliseconds... Anyway, this is a bit surprising looking at this video because if by default all power goes to the front, than why did the Audi not get of the rolls in the first test instantly?

If you're just comparing the AWD systems, Subaru wins. However, these vehicles are worlds apart in terms of comfort, style, and overall quality. Our 14 XV had the strut mounts replaced before 20k, the gas struts on the lift gate failed, had random rattles in the dash and now has issues with a sensor causing the check engine light to flash. Our 13 Outback made so many noises & rattles and took 6+ trips to the dealer to sort out. Towing was also a joke. (1500 lbs real capacity, not the advertised 2700). Now we have a real SUV.

More like just them having true AWD system and longitunual drivetrains in most cars. But even with transverse Audi keeps it real. Toyota used to have cars like Subie in these terms like GTFour celicas, Lancer when they had Evo and Eclipse GSX. Now its incredibly rare most manufacturers use these phony stupid fake AWD systems that may turn on if you already loose traction, which just makes it more dangerous because people thing they can rely on it and it then makes car suddenly behave in different way which may just lead to more dangerous loss of control or overcorrecting. If you have manual Subaru you have really constant and predictable awd, and fun too because it will nicely oversteer in gentle way helping with turning on snow or ice, it never fails to deliver the power to the ground and move right away.

Is Audi Q5 prefacelift (Torsen diff) or Audi Q5 facelift (Crown differential). The problem with torsen diff is the the ratio 1:4. If fronts do not move the 4x multiplication torque factor that theoretically could be send to the rear differential (ratio of front rear) is zero. So for Audi Q5, if prefacelift, I would love to see the same test with front wheels on rollers (no friction) which is their weakest link.. Cheers for the video.

The rollers don’t really kick in Quattro instantly because Quattro detects ice first not rollers. And then will send power instantly to wheel with traction. It’s just seen as an off-road or mud/snow situation.
@4x4.tests.on.rollers
@4x4.tests.on.rollers 6 жыл бұрын
+Audilife If there is zero traction under one wheel, no matter if it is on roller or ice, Quattro (Torsen) is helpless, it behaves like open diff. Above tests (side and diagonal) are more about traction control, without that both cars would not send power to wheels with traction.

duszaniespokojna lool that’s not the point before the car even begins to move if ice was detected by sensors there would be an immediate response. Quattro is very sensitive and can detect different situations. I understand from a view of no traction. But my point is the sensors didn’t detect ice and has a slower response.

Until now I had no change to compare them with LED powered headlights, because they cost like 2 grand and nobody is willing to order them.

If i would go for AWD, then definitely Acura's SH AWD aka IVTM4 on Honda (also good value), no center clutch only activating on slip like Subaru, there are many other awd systems which can actually lock center diff or close center clutch pack by selector if desired. I hope Subaru will ditch cvt and add at least center locker, even Jeep Renegade has it, Subaru needs to remain iconic and capable
@4x4.tests.on.rollers

@@4x4.tests.on.rollers Not all, but Crosstrek, Legacy, Outback, Tribeca and Impreza vrx does with few slight differences like it closes either 50/50 or 60/40 on slip only...Renegade has center locker selectable with "4wd lock" button with limited capabilities to prevent binding, but it can be locked in speeds below 70mph, or before vehicle is moving and you take off with 50/50 split, there are even YT videos proving this exactly behavior on loose surface comparing to Crosstrek

@@4x4.tests.on.rollers Yes you right, Subaru's vtd, act4 detects slip, also uses other sensors and has good response to variables, but it can't be pre-locked and again slomo video proves how it takes off 2wd and slightly later it engages rear...It was the result which made me interested in that I do not know what exactly is locked with lock button in Renegade, but the result is that it spins front and rear together from get go I don't doubt Subaru's system is sufficient for dirt, wet, snow, nobody will rock crawl those needing uninterrupted momentum
@4x4.tests.on.rollers
@4x4.tests.on.rollers 3 жыл бұрын
@@tallll70 You are making very common mistake in understanding of rear wheels engagement - that is wheelspin (angular speed) vs torque. You can't SEE if rear axle is engaged from the beginning, torque is invisible. You can only see when it get locked with front one. If the initial torque split is for example 70/30 then there will be always overspin of front axle - but it doesn't mean at all that rear wheel are not engaged. In Subaru - if you press the acceleration pedal hard - clutch-pack gets locked. In Renegade - whatever mode you choose - dog clutch in PTU and rear clutch-pack are engaged or even locked at start. If LOCK mode isn't engaged - the system may disconnect completely the drive shaft so it will not rotate. If LOCK mode is engaged - drive shaft is always connected and spinning, even when only front wheels are powered (rear clutch-pack open).
