Thank you Autogefuhl for a fantastic review of the Audi S3. Your reviews are always so thorough and you offer a great approach that considers everyday use of the car and not only driving dynamics. The S3 has been often maligned for its understeer and "false" Haldex all wheel drive system, but as someone who recently purchased one, I can totally agree with your assessment that it is a sporty versatile everyday driving car. Keep up the amazing work!

I totally agree with you about the wheels! They do remind me of the spoke lace BBS wheels that were on my brothers 1988 Audi 90 Quattro 10v. Out of all the auto's we've had, the Audi is the car that I'm fondest over. Man I loved that 5 cylinder.

Brilliant Audi in a great review Thomas! I like these 18' alloy wheels, the high quality interior and that shiny red exterior, but it's too bad that most car manufacturers doesn't offer for their top versions an alternative to the genuine leather, as for the middle trim levels.

6 years later - this is still my daily car. It’s only done 35k miles and I’ve only changed my tyres twice and brake pads once. I almost went to the TTRS a few years ago, but I’m happy I didn’t and I’ll be driving my S3 until it literally falls apart. I may have changed a few things - added folding mirrors, added RS3 carbon fibre trim, RS3 start/stop button, RS3 alcantara DSG shifter, swapped the steering wheel for an R8 wheel, made a few VCDS changes, and added facelift rear lights. Really surprised why Audi stopped using MMI controls since you can control them instinctively without losing focus on the road. The only thing I’ve been disappointed with my S3 over the years is them dropping Google Earth view a few years ago. I no longer use navigation as a result as Earth view kept maps up to date as you could see things. There’s ways around enabling moving video btw 😉 18:38 - I drove a rental A3 on the Amalfi Coast a couple of years ago. If I didn’t own an S3, I can guarantee it would have many scratches and maybe a few mopeds embedded in the bonnet. I’m in the US and once drove from Florida to Colorado and back in a week in mine (3,600 mile round trip) - felt fine afterwards even in the sports seats. Btw I also drove up Pikes Peak (15,000ft) in mine - power wasn’t great above 13,000ft 😂 I know the focus here is always new cars, but we rarely see reviews of cars that owners have had for years and love and why they love them, what the service issues were (I had zero except all the passenger airbag recalls), and what they’d maybe change and what recommendations they’d have over years of ownership. I’m no engineer, but if Audi would reach out to long term owners for their thoughts - I think they’d learn a lot. For example: 19” summer tires are useless, throw on some EBC red stuff carbon pads, there’s a little oversteer on the rear, MMI works etc.

Hey Thomas, thanks for this review! I'm actually comparing this car against one that may not be a natural comparison - the C450 coupe. Other than the obvious differences such as shape and backseat use, how does the driving experience compare in your opinion?
@autogefuehl

+Drew Furney thanks! Sure I have no problem with any comparison. Did you see our C-Class reviews? C450 AMG sedan: kzbin.info/www/bejne/roaTY6Cvh8xkiMk C400 & C63 Coupe: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6iuc6N9atWYg7M The S3 is the most agile of those. The C450 is however also very much fun. My absolute favourite however is the C400 as the ride is total smooth!! If you want to sportiest ride, go for the S3. Most comfortable ride C400. Something in between C450 :)

Thanks Thomas, another excellent review! I love this car's exterior. In my view this car is exactly the right size, and it looks elegant because they got the proportions just right for this one. Arguably the best looking sedan right now. And I also think it will age well, and continue to be beautiful in the future. I have to admit though, that the wheels are not my taste, The interior is very high quality, but as you mentioned there are very few elements. It looks a bit 'simple' in that sense. I prefer a bit more standard setup, like in the Golf. Or in the new A4, I really like that one too, even though it also doesn't have that many elements. Great car overall, but quite pricey once you add all the options you really want. It's pretty silly that cruise control is not even standard on this car, and options on the Audi's are always quite expensive. But it looks sooooo good..

Great review as usual Thomas. A quick question- why don't you like genuine leather?
@autogefuehl
@autogefuehl 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking interest in this very important topic.A special video from Autogefühl can be found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpecYn6dl7uVgLM Furthermore, you’ll find footage of leather production here, starting 28:08 kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5CwkIGEdp2ForM To the often said argument, animal skin would just be a byproduct, please google/youtube "leather is not a byproduct" you will find plenty of information. A good overview on all those issues can also be found here: adaptt.org/ Key facts: 1. There are productions where the cow is killed for the skin first, sometimes even alive, the skin is the most profitable part of the body. 2. Even if a cow gets killed for meat first, you give additional money to an industry that relies on murder, pollutes the environment and harms people with chemicals 3. Does it really matter for which cause a mammal, that is 99 % genetically identical with us, gets killed? Help to raise awareness on this subject. Thanks!

+Hundra14Kronor Remaining SAAB 9-5's were sold for 25% off, a great buy...until you find out there was no warranty. An after market warranty could be purchased but was sometimes US$10,000. Again components unique to SAAB are almost impossible to find. And, there aren't any cars at the junk yard. Sale was extremely small.

The brilliance behind ALL of Thomas' reviews - notwithstanding he and the filming/production crew's intelligence - is the (again I must say) intelligence......, intelligent perspective of showing the vehicle as it fully should be shown (going over all relevant points) and then driving the car as one intelligently should............ Not stomping on the accelerator, endlessly laying rubber left and right, taking turns at 10,000 mph, revving (read: trashing) the engine to 50 million rpm, etc., etc., especially as that bearded fatso American does for Motor Trend.This IS how an intelligent revue should always be. Owning a S3 i need to disagree with two points. The suspension even with adaptive drive is rather hard. Thereby the difference between the Modi (Comfort, Dynamic) is for the suspension very low. Next point is the gear ratio (with DSG), at high speeds the RPM is pretty high and i sometimes whish to have 1 or 2 gears more. But overall a great review. Furthermore i need to admit that the consumption is for such a sports car rather low. My average for the last 13000 km is 9,5 L/100 km. Yesterday i drove through Switzerland and managed in Efficiency Mode on the highway 6,8 L/100 km, astonishing!

Amazing review Thomas, I must say I love the S3!. Regarding S3 vs RS3, mmmm .... the driver in me says go for the full banana, the RS3, though I shudder at the price ... here in Australia ... *gulp* ... $89k AUD ...! ... which is AMG A45 money, a very serious hot hatch weapon, which I would be leaning towards. For me, call me tight, but I would be looking at the cut priced alternatives, which are about 90% the way there for about 2/3 of the S3 price ($72k AUD). Volkswagen Golf R and Jetta 155tsi, are $58k and $39k respectively. Not sure if the Golf R is $20k better than the Jetta, which is why I have the Jetta in my driveway. Call it the poor mans S3 if you like, but I cant justify the $33k difference between it and the S3. Yes the S3 has AWD and 50KW more, and does 0-100kph in 5 seconds, the Jetta getting there in 7.2 seconds (though I have managed mid/high 6's), but i dont think it justifies the price premium.

+Autogefühl Would you prefer the s3 to a slightly less powerful A4? check out this configuration that I made in the audi configurator at audi.es (in other country sites this code doesn't works): code AV6G09SR
@autogefuehl
@autogefuehl 8 жыл бұрын
+pitthepig A4 is more expensive, however it is quite a different car indeed. The A4 is the more refined, luxury one, the A3/S3 feels more agile and sportier. When u pick the A4 with the big petrol engine, it is more than enough power of course. Question is, do you want to play the extra price for the A4 ? Hmmm where is the fiel where i can enter the code?
@pitthepig
@pitthepig 8 жыл бұрын
you have to go to audi.es, select a4 on the top list, nuevo (new) audi A4 - configurador, and on the right panel select audi code. A new tab opens (appears a new code but is the vanilla car) and at the right you can paste any code and load it. This way you can see any configuration that someone has made if you have his code. Unfortunately it seems that it has to be on the same contry site, i've tried to load it on audi.de and it doesn't works.

Hey Thomas, great video as usual! I am planning on buying a car within the range of 50,000 USD and I would appreciate your opinion on which car you would pick? I have narrowed it down to either the BMW 435i which has excellent exterior looks, the Audi S3 which has a very loud exhaust and engine which is something I love, and the 2017 Audi A4 which has a very nice interior with great new technology but not the same power as the S3 or 435i. So which car would you choose and why would you pick it? Also if you have any other cars around that price point that you think would be good as well please let me know. Thank you and I would really appreciate your help

+RamoThePharaoh hey, sure I can help. So what is your main purpose? How sporty and how comfortable shall it be? Will you be driving alone or with how many other adults? Of your presented choice, the new A4 is surely the most refined car. S3 is one segment below, compact. 4-Series and A4 are mid-size. In that mid-size segment, you can also go for VW Passat or Skoda Superb or Mercedes C-Class.

I don't understand this real leather - artificial leather argument? Some people eat the meat of animals and leather is left over. Should we use it? Or should we further pollute our environment by burning oil and making plastic seats which will remain around us forever, which will never dissolve naturally, not in a thousand years? By the way, great review.

+Vlado Vujo Thanks Vlado! See our video about that leather issue here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpecYn6dl7uVgLOJsing animal skin on seats kills. It is a lie that so called leather is just a byproduct. In some productions, maybe. But a lot of productions kill the animals for the skin. And even if this is not directly done, with buying leather you support an industry that relies on torture, oppression and murder. I have also bought two cars with animal skin seats in my life so far - but as I have seen for myself how humans and animals have to suffer from the killing and the chemicals being used, I decided never to buy leather again and also try to inform others that they dont make the same mistake. Google and youtube 'leather is not a byproduct' and you will find plenty of information where you cannot come to any other conclusion. Clearly, the animal aspect is far more important than anything. But just for info, if you look at the ecobalance of the whole process, the artificial seats are way ahead because so much less water, energy and chemicals are used. Leather is _not_ a natural product, that is a misconception. Google 'why leather is not eco-friendly'. And finally, to the practical side while using it in the car, leather makes you sweat in summer and leaves you cold in winter. Best is when you have cloth or microfibre on the inside of the seats. On the outside, faux leather could be used for the visual part, if thats available.

+Autogefühl I think that a lot of what you wrote is basically speculative. Have in mind that more than 95% of people worldwide eat meat. What do you do with all the left over skins? You make leather out of them, amongst which the most goes to car production. The treatment of those animals is as humane as it can be, in developed countries. It is rather philosophical question, but none of those animals would be bread if it was not for the humans who eat them (I am not talking about rare animals used for fur or some other special skins) so basically most of them wouldn't exist if it was not for hungry humans. So skin is actually left over, believe me, I am in the industry, I have a slaughter house for those pigs and cattle. I just watched "How It's Made" on artificial skin, it is 100% artificial; chemicals and oil based products. The stuff that once is made stays on the planet forever. We should start taking some care of our planet and stop polluting it. My opinion.

+Vlado Vujo I am very sorry that this affects your job, but I think that people should stop eating meat. We are not talking indigenous people, we are talking modern lifestyle where you dont have to eat meat to survive. Why should I kill another being if I dont have to?

Hi from Canada Thomas - I enjoy your videos. I was wondering if you knew why if Germans consider sedan style cars 'old fashioned' (from the Jetta video) vs. hatchbacks, why is there such a market for all these small sport sedans (S3,RS3,3/4 series M , etc etc). I.e. Curious why the S3 will sell in Germany, but not the GLI . Thanks!
@tsint
@tsint 8 жыл бұрын
+W. Ian in Sweden only old people has sedans, and I think that most people here think that estate/hatchbacks are better looking than a boring sedan.
@MrCarGuy
@MrCarGuy 8 жыл бұрын
+tsint People don't have sedans there because they're more expensive than estates.
@tsint
@tsint 8 жыл бұрын
+MrCarGuy20 no, not the list price at least, A4 Avant is €2000 more expensive than same Sedan, same for A6, BMW 3-series and 5-series. What makes sedans more expensive is perhaps the resale value, which is really poor.
@MrCarGuy
@MrCarGuy 8 жыл бұрын
+tsint Well, that's part of what I mean. Cost isn't only measured by nominal price. You have to consider depreciation, storage space, other usability, and resale value over the life of the car. In the U.S., for example, many people own both an SUV and a sedan instead of just buying an estate. It's mainly because we require a vehicle strong enough to tow very heavy weight like boats and also have room for things on the interior when we need to.

I like the interior design, but do you guys think it is worth the 15.000 Euro - or 50% (!) - premium over a Seat Leon Cupra (ST) with the same engine and underpinnings? I don't think so... Due to current discounts you can get an almost fully loaded Seat Leon ST Cupra 290 for under 30.000 Euro brand new, the Audi will cost you at least 45.000 Euro with a similar level of eqipment with the current discounts. I don't think the Audi badge is worth the premium...

VW has proven it can take a 4 cylinder engine and get V6 power from it. Sadly, manuals are scarce with this engine in America. The DSG is really nice, but doing racing or autocross just begs for a manual. plus, you save over a $1000 US.

The S3 sadly doesn't use a Quattro AWD system. It uses a Haldex designed system.
@autogefuehl
@autogefuehl 8 жыл бұрын
+MrCarGuy20 Quattro just means All Wheel Drive at Audi. In fact, they once published a set of graphics showing the different quattro systems. There are like 3 or 4 different principles used, but they just all call them quattro.
@MrCarGuy
@MrCarGuy 8 жыл бұрын
+Autogefühl Not exactly, though. If an Audi vehicle doesn't have a "Quattro" badge on the vehicle, it does not have an in-house Audi-designed AWD system (at least in the U.S.). Quattro systems are able to have a 50/50 torque distribution between front and rear axles. The true Quattro system is usually reserved for RS models. The S3 has a system designed by the company Haldex. It is only able to send about 30% maximum to the rear axle (and is essentially FWD).
@autogefuehl
@autogefuehl 8 жыл бұрын
+MrCarGuy20 I know what you mean, yes indeed. This car is predominantly FWD. What I just meant is that they still use it for marketing ... just look at the Audi website, S3 is described as quattro

love the color and wheels. Makes this bit boring, but still the nicest sedan from Audi, more fancy. I always miss emotion at the S/RS range at Audi. Mercedes and BMW do it way better. Fast in a straight line but horrendous in the corners due to much weight on the front axle.
