A bit of an unfair comparison between a sports car and a coupe built on a hatchback platform, the Audi looks modern/stunningly beautiful compared the Porsche timeless design that will age well in 50 years time. The Porsche Cayman is a focused Sports car with midship engine, no useless 911 type backseat. Give me a flat six BoxEngine coupled onto a manual transmission to prevent redundant left leg🦵for a well deserved analog drive, the feeling is so rewarding no matter how slow or fast you drive. That to me is my definition of driving purity.

You could say that but the TT in various versions, usually the RS version have appeared in at least one comparison tests and won. I’m not entirely sure it matters that the TT was built on a hatchback platform, I think you need to look back at how Audi dominated rallying years ago and why.

On the subject of looks I have a 2016 TTS and sometimes I park it beside a 2015 718 and the Porsche looks very old to me. On engines the Audi 5 cylinder turbo has sounds that a 718 will never equal. Choice wise I’d choose a TTRS over the the Porsche, even more so as it’s so hard to come by now.

@@LifeInMotionuk Yeah it’s quite something. I watched a clip from Fifth Gear, with a TTRS, a 2.0 turbo Jag, a bm something and the Porsche. Only looked it up after watching your video and the Audi won. End of the day it’s down to money as well as preference. If had a choice and the money I’d still got for a 5 cylinder turbo Audi coupe. Got to wonder what rationale Audi have for binning the TT and the R8, maybe they have plans to bring out an electric alternative. If they bring something out that’s not in the same vein as the TT and R8 it’ll be a mistake. Still a market for sports cars, I don’t see Porsche going in a different direction from what essentially they’ve always been known for.
@LifeInMotionuk Жыл бұрын
I don’t recognise that fifth gear video but sounds good! Audi coupe would be a very very good choice. I was very surprised and gutted about the R8 and TT being no longer. Both superb and great successes. I’ve definitely got the R8 on the list, but an early manual coupe would do me! Agreed, but suspect electric will be what’s coming. And perhaps they want to avoid a situation where we compare new cars with the TT and R8 Very true. I know the electric cayman is on the way but they’ve also made small improvements to make the best. It’s worked very well for 50+ years

When I first started considering a Cayman, I took a test drive both on 2.5 GTS and 4.0 GTS. At first I could not really see what all the fuss was about. 4.0 sounds great, but 2.5 is by no means bad. The thing was, 2.5 GTS had around 15k km on it, and I've driven it hard on the road, did launches. 4.0 had, I think 300 km or something and I was one of the first people to test drive it. So I was mostly gentle with it, but had sports exhaust on. At first I did not really think that 4.0 was worth extra money and extra gas, but went for it for two reasons: I am allergic to turbos (even though 2.5 is miles ahead of my Audi in terms of turbo lag) and second hand market prices were abysmal. After a couple months of ownership I found out that lower end torque is really fine compared to 2.5 due to sheer amount of power alone. And I am not a speed junkie, 0-100 times worry me less than rolling acceleration. When I've finally broken in the Cayman, I started pushing it to redline, and it's intoxicating. Engine wakes up after 4k rpm and starts to sing, and going from 7k to 8k feels like a nice and warm hug. That's not something that you have in 2.5 unfortunately. So in the end it depends on what you're comparing 2.5 GTS to. In absolute value 2.5 is a tremendously good package and I'd recommend it to anyone. The driving experience, weight distribution, chassis, steering - it's all there. It's just 4.0 is too good. As for Audi TT. It took me probably 20 minutes to write it off my shortlist. It's really just an Audi in a form factor of a sports car, but not a true sports car. And no, it's not a baby R8.
@LifeInMotionuk Жыл бұрын
Wow! Thanks for that feedback. I think if I had the budget for the 4.0, that would have taken my fancy I do feel when the 2.5 hits 7k rpm it starts to sing however it ends so quickly…I just want more! Thanks again- enjoy your GTS!

I’ve had both a 981 S, 2.5 GTS and TTRS. Much preferred the RS for daily driving, noise and straight line performance. The RS is more of a 911 4S rival than a cayman in terms of pace. The question about the sound between the 981 and 718 will be around as long as the two models exist… and the winner will always be the 981 - it’s just on a totally different level. Just that alone will give an ownership experience that cannot be rivalled each and every time its driven (particularly with the GTS and GT4 models). However the 718 is, in every other way that can be scientifically measured, the better car. That will also give its own different but enjoyable ownership experience, albeit not as unique (IMO).

If you're looking for a TT go with the TT-RS; the one equipped with a foot pedal specifically. The multi clutch of the base TT and TTS is the equivalent of someone periodically tapping on your shoulder and demanding $5k. The Mechatronic unit is expensive too. These also require dealership only tools so you aren't putting it on a trolley jack for an afternoon. The compact design of the 4L Turbo engine also makes replacing one component a matter of taking out several which increases labor times therefore labor bills. The TT-RS is a slightly larger engine and easier to work on and is opposite of what was written above.
@LifeInMotionuk Жыл бұрын

Only twice the price! There’s the person looking for the TT you could talk into a TTS maybe, but TTRS isn’t even the same league of car (hence the price) typically you aren’t going to cross shop a base TT and a TTRS.

@@juelz4516 Considering the multi clutch on the TT/TTS is $6200 to replace, the timing belt another $4000 and most other components require multiple branches into the service manual to get done one can easily justify the TT-RS at $10 to $15K more given it is chain driven, has no multi clutch and isn't as labor intensive to say replace a thermostat or a water pump. Thermostats on all cars require removal of the airbox but the TT/TTS also require the intake duct, the alternator, radiator shroud, three times as many coolant hoses and a coolant pipe to all be removed just to get to the thermostat. The TT-RS only requires the removal of the airbox, a hose and one pipe. The water pump requires one to get to the poly V belt on the TT-RS but on the TT/TTS it's driven by that timing belt which has a top and bottom cover/ about 12 pages of reading say to the TT-RS's 4 pages. It's less a matter of savings and more one of delayed costs to own the vehicle due to the layered nature of the drive train along with the labor intensive design.
@Alexandru-T. Жыл бұрын
@@mightymulatto3000 In what country a timing belt costs 4000 dollars? Plus, it doesn't even have a timing belt. The 2.0 TFSI is chain. All TT's are equipped with double clutch gearboxes, be it normal, TTD or RS. The RS just has a model that can cope with the extra torque.
@mightymulatto3000 Жыл бұрын
@@Alexandru-T. My 2010 Audi TTS is belt driven. The shop guide lists the steps to get it off. It's also listed in the service schedule as: Timing Belt - Replace. Check condition of timing belt tensioning system, dampening pulleys, and idler pulleys and replace if necessary every 110,000 miles. TTS only. Parts are about $500 total since the water pump is down there too behind the upper and lower timing belt cover. The $250/hr labor rate is what inflates the cost. Quoted as a 14 hour job.
