Audi Ur Quattro Turbo Barn Find - rare survivor sat for nearly 30 years. Whilst all Ur Quattros hold allure to Jonny, this Alpine white example properly hooked him in. Why? Two reasons. One, It has been sat inside a council garage since 1994. Untouched. Jason (who got in touch with us) has no idea why his brother stopped using it, and why it was put on blocks and left. He also didn't realise quite how early it was. And that's the second reason. This is a 1982 car. It is one of the first 72 RHD versions made for the UK market, making it pretty scarce.
THIS CAR IS NOW FOR SALE VIA AUCTION: www.carandclassic.com/auction...
Same white Fuch wheels, but the barn (council lock up) find Audi had been fitted with some kind of bodykit and chin spoiler. As was common at the time, it has also had its quad headlights swapped for the post 1983 oblong units.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.

Hi folks. Thanks very much for the positive comments. It was a pleasure to meet Jonny and Phil. We tried everything we could in the time we had to get the old beast fired up, but it wasn't to be. I would love to be able to recomission the car myself, but it would be a rather costly exercise, parts for these cars are extremely rare now. Will most likely put the car up for auction, it will take a true enthusiast to get it back on the road.

Very cool car. For anyone looking to do something similar then NEVER attempt to put fuel from an old tank (be it fresh or otherwise) through a K Jetronic injection system. In all honesty it shouldn't be put through any injection system but K Jet is extremely vulnerable to dirt & once it gets in it can be impossible to get out. That fact combined with the fact that the system pressure is high (circa 70psi) means you want to give everything a good going over before you risk sparks & fuel coming together. Ideally flush the tank & purge everything through then pressure test. With no crank on this one & from the era that the car was last used then there is a good chance it has an immobiliser or at least a hidden switch somewhere. You can normally tell if the solenoid is actually pulling current as it will casue a voltage drop which can be seen by the dash lights dimming. The other obvious point for this car which should have been checked & ideally renewed was the cambelt. Given the fact that the engine had also been left open then you would want to turn it by hand & make sure it felt ok before going anywhere near the starter, ideally you would always do that. As it's a barn find special it would be good if there was a bit more structure to the process of reviving a car that has been stood for so long, if all the right checks & work has been done then it'll run & not destroy itself or catch fire.

Perfect response and also applies to any belt drive engine and any fuel injection system.

I had a similar reaction when Jonny said he was going to put fuel in an old tank. Should have been all spark plugs out and turned by hand. And only turned by hand after oil was put in each cylinder.

It makes me cringe a bit to think about the state that the oil might be in on some of these barnfinds. I know that starting the engine is part of the barnfind 'schtick', but I'd much prefer it done after the oil had been dropped and refilled with fresh stuff (and potentially flush).

Yes, the cam belt was definitley some thing that should have been changed before a start attempt. Good advice.

My father, who passed away last year, was a Fife farmer living about 60 miles south of Montrose. He was a classic early adopter and bought the first Quattro in Scotland. It was on a ‘Y’ plate and was one of the first cars I drove after passing my test 2 weeks after turning 17 (farm car insurance!). I remember driving it up the A9 to Aviemore through the closed snow gates (the police waved me through) on virgin snow for about 50 miles only knowing where the road was by the snow poles! It doesn’t seem real thinking back on it! He loved his technically advanced cars - he had one of the first 99 Turbos and lots of other interesting and unusual stuff (never flash though - it was all about the engineering). A great childhood that I appreciate more and more as I get older. Anyway, great video that brought back many happy memories. If only my father had kept it but that wasn’t his way!

It was actually silver - right hand drive. I remembered the very distinctive noise of the engine, and how fast it felt with that wonderful turbo lag that made 80’s turbo cars seem so much faster than they really were (I had a Renault 5 GT Turbo in the late 80’s that I still remember as being really fast despite only 120HP!).

Nice story except the part about getting wavred through the closed snowgates at Drumochter. Thry must have still been open because if they were shut, then nope.....not a chance bud! And how do I know? Becsuse I was a policeman stationed at Pitlochry from 1981 for 7 years who operated the gates and once they were shut nobody, not even god himself was allowed through! Everybody got stopped at Blair Atholl or turned back there if they had passed before the gates were shut. Nice story otherwise though. You were very lucky to get to drive such a beautiful car

Waved right through I promise. Lines of lorries parked and drove right past them. It’s possible there wasn’t a policeman there but I recall someone waving us through. The drive up the A9 on virgin snow is really not something you forget!

This is why I love these videos - and the community here. The crisp and sweet wrappers remind you how much more this was than just a car - it was of its time, and I can remember exactly what it was like as a child growing up in the '80s because of things like that - it's what made it all so special. The Ferrari Testarossa was for the bedroom wall - I was never going to see one of those in Swindon - but an Audi Quattro or a Sierra Cosworth? Those were real to me. They were always just within reach, and I'm fairly certain that anyone who's into cars today who was growing up then had a family member who drove a car like this - an older brother, one of your parents, that weird uncle... Thanks for the memories.

And now in eastern europe...even a regular Audi Coupe or most boring Ford Sierra is nearly unobtainium. Sucks since I really love the look of those. Only realistic 80s "coupe" is a 3 door Mk.2 Golf, or Peugeot 205 if you're reeeeally super lucky, both either the godawful diesels or lowest output petrol models...

I fell in love with the Quattro. I was also lucky enough to sit in Hannu Mikkolas Quattro around that time at a show either before or after the Circuit of Ireland in Maysfield Leisure centre in Belfast. As a kid, our next-door neighbours son in-law ran the Audi dealership in Belfast and took us for a spin in what he claimed to be the very first rhd Quattro. It was being toured around the dealerships in the UK. It was really fast and sounded life changing, but the main selling point was just how quickly it stopped for the time! It was also white with the Audi ring decals up the side.

My father's 86 ur quattro has been off the road also for well over 20 years always garaged. Myself and a friend tried getting it semi road worthy around 4 years ago but everything we touched ie bolts etc snapped due to corrosion, we even had it running but would need setting up again due to misfiring slightly. It now sits in a garage in mostly whole with many new parts fitted including fuel pump, leads, new oil filters and we even had the digital dash repaired. Even the 80s car phone still switches on in the cabin. with nearly £2000 of parts ready to fit it needs someone with professional attention and knowledge of these cars. I hope 1 day my father will get to drive his pride and joy again before its too late.

Great video, really enjoyed that! My brother used to work for Brian Rickett's of "GTi Engineering" and "BR Motorsport" fame. Sadly, Brian passed away about ten years ago and whilst my brother and the other guys who worked for Brian, where emptying out the workshop, they came across a stockpile of Ur Quattro parts (many of them brand new, still in there original packaging) that he had been hoarding. By all accounts, they had enquiries from enthusiasts all around the world, due to Ur Quattro parts being rarer than an honest politician... 🤣👍

Wonder was the cam cover removed for paint? They were badly finished and every 5 cyl Audi I owned (5) had a rusty cam cover from an early age. The UR was one of the first cars I painted when I worked for an Audi dealer in the late 80's . Suprised you thought of starting it with the cam belt being so old though.

For future reference johnny this old barn cars you are starting you should be draining old fuel entirely from the connection at the carb/fuel-meter/injection rail inlet then put in say 3 gallon of fresh fuel into the tank. As for what you did with the oil can there virtually a waste of time (as thoughtful as it was :) ) and removing the spark plugs as you did BUT with the plugs out winding the engine over for say 30 seconds 4-5 times with 1-2m breaks in between each cycle THEN everything back together and fire it up...Or at least try..hope this helps :)

@kimberleycannon6894
@kimberleycannon6894 2 жыл бұрын
You are better off draining the fuel tank on a UR by gravity by disconnecting the flow before the pre filter under the tank as the pre filter is easily blocked, the fuel pressure accumulator is also a weak point and then There is the fuel pump all before you get to the steel fuel pipe that runs post pump to the metering head in the engine bay. When you have done this you can add fresh fuel and then in the fuse box bridge the fuel pump circuit (as the UR ordinarily has to see crank rotation before it will power up the fuel pump relay/circuit). You should then hopefully have fresh fuel at the inlet to the metering head. TBH the old Bosch k-jet is not A fan of old fuel/sediment and along with the warm up reg has a few built In Gauze filters that will be blocked along with gummed up mechanical injectors so I wasn’t holding my breathe in all honesty as I’ve been there with old UR’s. As true petrol heads I think it’s always nice to try to breathe life into a true garage find but alas with this old girl I would prefer to just strip her down, clean and refurb/ reassemble and fire her up when the restoration has progressed the that point. Such an iconic car, I don’t think I would ever part with mine having owned it for the last 21 years.

@@jameshoward2738 Barely practical going to all that extra far from practical VERY excessive faff especially in his case lol......£10-20 12v pump off ebay is perfectly fine to put in line if need be....Not to mention another reason to do as mentioned is to also help move/flush stagnant crap along/out the lines and filter too! soon as the new fuels in repeat til a couple litres is primed through of the fresh stuff all back together and away you go
@jameshoward2738
@jameshoward2738 2 жыл бұрын
@@monkeymagic4555 All that faff is what you'd need to do before trying to run it from it's own fuel tank, filter & lines. I do not recommend trying to do that. I do not recommend trying to run it at all without some basic checks and recommissioning work. You need 6 bar of fuel pressure to the metering head which doesn't lend itself very well to rigging up a cheap pump and a bit of hose. From the pump, through the accumulator & filter, all the way up to the metering head & injectors are all high pressure lines & fittings. Once dirt gets in the fuel filter, it cannot be flushed though, the point of the filter is to trap the dirt. That car is surely going to go from there to some place the recommissioning work can be done on the back of a truck. I wouldn't try to start it first. That's just my opinion as a long term owner who has spent over 20 years getting to know these cars inside out. From the detail in their post, I could tell Kimberley has similar experience of them as me. That is why I replied to their post.

Love these videos and the UR-quatrro. Funny to hear it being pronounced in individual letters, the germans pronounce it as a whole as 'ur' stands for 'the original' in German. Also quite happy this didn't start, not a big fan of firing up a car that stood for 28 years without a valve cover and with old fuel in the tank.
