The German Touring Car Championship or (DTM) has a storied history dating back to its inception in 1984, and one of its most iconic moments came when Audi joined the fray in 1990 with the formidable Audi V8 Quattro DTM race car. This beast of a machine not only shattered expectations but also left its mark on DTM history.
The heart of this racing legend was a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V8 engine that produced a jaw-dropping 463 horsepower. This powerhouse of an engine sent its immense power to all four wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. What's even more remarkable is that, in adherence to the Group A regulations of the time, the V8 Quattro DTM retained its wood-veneer dashboard, giving it an air of elegance that contrasted starkly with its racing prowess.
Now One of the standout features of this car was its all-wheel-drive system, a novelty in the DTM series. This feature, combined with the V8 engine, proved to be a formidable combination on the track.
Within a mere 18 months of its debut, the V8 Quattro DTM had already clinched two championship titles, driven by the talented hands of Hans Stuck and Frank Biela. These victories showcased the car's dominance and left competitors in awe of its capabilities.
However, the 1992 season brought unexpected challenges. Audi introduced a flat plane engine crankshaft, initially approved but later deemed illegal according to DTM rules. This unfortunate turn of events led to Audi's withdrawal from the championship before the seventh race of the season, marking a disappointing end to an otherwise impressive campaign.
The Audi V8 Quattro DTM was a unique entrant in the DTM series. It was based on the Audi V8, a luxury sedan designed to rival the Mercedes S-Class and the BMW 7 Series. Notably, the V8 Quattro DTM was the first DTM car to feature permanent all-wheel drive, a feature that caught the attention of competitors and fans alike.
The car's enormous dimensions, with an external length of 4.87 meters and a wheelbase of 2.70 meters, set it apart from the smaller, more agile rivals such as the BMW M3 and Mercedes 190E. Despite its size and a high base weight of 1,230 kilograms, the V8 Quattro DTM's four-wheel drive and the potent V8 engine, devoid of turbocharging, made it a formidable competitor on the track.
Now Slimming down the luxury sedan for racing was a significant challenge. Audi had to shed nearly 550 kilograms from the original car's weight, which featured luxurious amenities. To achieve this weight reduction, the racing version eliminated interior trim, insulation material, seats, and a considerable amount of electronics. And Lightweight carbon fiber-Kevlar composite material was used for the hood and bumpers.
On to the engine. this specific V8 engine used by Audi in the DTM racing variant was a naturally aspirated masterpiece. Initially, it produced 400 horsepower, which was increased later in the season. The engine's performance and cubic capacity were crucial in determining the car's basic weight, as per DTM regulations.
However, controversy surrounded the engine's output. Competitors and critics alike speculated that the engine produced more power than officially stated. Audi's detractors even made a bet with Audi sports director Herwart Kreiner regarding the engine's power output, which Audi ultimately won.
But even with them proving that the engine made what they said it did. The racing version of the V8 engine posed a constant challenge. DTM officials often considered the engine's performance rating to be too low, leading to disputes between Audi and other teams.
In the end, the Audi V8 Quattro DTM left a mark on DTM history, not only for its performance on the track but also for the controversies and challenges it faced during its brief yet impactful racing career. Despite its ultimate withdrawal from the championship in 1992, the V8 Quattro DTM remains an enduring symbol of Audi's motorsport prowess and innovation.
