For those wondering how this compares to a basic $100 interface, it's not amazingly worlds apart better in one particular aspect but it offers many little improvements that all add up to a better overall package. Audio sounds a little crisper. Recorded audio sounds a little more crisper. Pre-amps supply more power. Output ports are TRS instead of RCA (meaning no noise interference for speakers). Two XLR mic ports instead of one. Better build quality and neater cable management in the back than something like the Focusrite. The knob that controls speakers and headphones volume individually.

Awesome review! This is about the only review I've found that is actually informative. I've been using various audio interfaces over the years and you've explained things I didn't like about the ID14 right off the bat! They could have done away with half of the gain circumference. I went through my setup twice thinking there was no way I had to crank it up past 3 o clock for a nominal level...well you do. It doesn't push my monitors or headphones very well in my opinion, again I have to crank the monitor and headphone levels almost all of the way up for a decent listening level....still considering returning it at this point. Thanks again for the review!

@beardedburner6 жыл бұрын
@Greg I run my Sennheiser HD-650 (300 Ohm), they sound really good. However not as good as using a dedicated headphone amp. If you want to go for loudness, chances are you’ll probably clip the Id-14 before you reach 90 dB. It’s not a huge problem, but it irks me to have the volume turned so high on the card during casual listening. (This seems to get a little better if you can be bothered to bring your power plug with you) I do love the card though, as a portable solution for recording, and an easy way to enjoy higher fidelity music. Tl;Dr : id-14 + high impedance cans = not loud, but very enjoyable. Closed backs get more out of this card.

Great video! I'm willing to buy the ID14 but i'm indecisive between it and the ID4, i like the ID4 dual headphone outputs, and i was wondering if it will make any differenve in quality using a headphone splitter with the ID14 to have two outputs? I also like the monitor pan button on the ID4 and i wonder if there is a workaround achieving that with the ID14. Last question regarding the ID4 if using a bus power could affect the preamp noise compared to using the power supply with the ID14?
@RealHomeRecording6 жыл бұрын
The iD4 only has one headphone output. Quality will suffer if you use a splitter. Volume may drop a little as well and you can't separately control the split volumes. The way around the latter issues is obviously to buy a couple headphone amps. I have found there to be more a little more noise when using wall power, actually.

Thanks man. Ok - I know this seems to be coming up, but I'm upgrading my m-audio fast track pro and am torn between the Audient iD14 and the Clarett 2Pre. My main usage is recording vocals with an SE2200a. I've just replaced my 10 year old Dell XPS to a new high-spec one, so I've got a thunderbolt port - which is obviously tempting to use. The "air" setting of the Clarett seems good, but I'm concerned that it will be too coloured to actually use as a default, and that it's best to have the sound as clean as possible to be then coloured in the DAW with plugins. After lots of searching, it seems that the Audient iD14 sounds a little better. But the low latency of the Clarett could be worth it, and surely it sounds (as) good? Can someone help me make a decision? Thank you!

Great review Adam. I started out with the Scarlett 2i2 but for some reason (to do with my laptop motherboard according to Focusrite) it kept dropping the drivers everytime I shut down my laptop, so everytime I turned on I had to go through the process of reloading the drivers which became a big PIA. I sent the unit back and bought the iD14 and it was like night and day in all respects. The thing is built like a tank, the pre's are so quiet, the user interface is easy to use and the DI input on the front of the unit is fantastic, if you turn up the gain with an electric guitar you can get a natural sounding "crunch". I love the fact that you can link it to the ASP800 (to be my next purchase) via the digital out. Even though it has no effects loop it is possible to link up outboard. This should cost at least 50% more than it does on features alone, and no I'm not an employee or sponsored, it's my first Audient purchase but it won't be my last.

Interesting review! I have several audio interfaces, both USB and firewire. Right now, on my old daily computer I have an old M-Audio Firewire 410. Drivers are somewhat dated but it works well enough. The trick with firewire is getting the right board for your computer with the TI chip set. My main home studio interface is a FocusRite Saffire Pro 40. It is also firewire and I am happy with it. Here is my question. By relying only on firewire to power my interfaces, am I missing out on quality by having a higher noise floor or under-powered preamps, etc.? Never thought of that. Because even a slight improvement can be a big deal.

"My main home studio interface is a FocusRite Saffire Pro 40. It is also firewire and I am happy with it. " Keep using it until you aren't happy with it anymore. If you think it is noisy then you aren't happy with it.

Thanks for review. I’m a little confused though. Has it got three inputs (two XLR/hybrid) one 1/4 inch? Can you put guitar into stereo effects pedal and then two inputs into Audient interface? If so, that suggests they’d go into the hybrid inputs... perhaps the id4 could have input into 1/4 inch I put and into the XLR on the back 🤔
@RealHomeRecording6 жыл бұрын
It's two analog inputs and a digital input (optical toslink, ADAT up to 8 channels at 48 kHz max or 4 channels at 96 kHz maximum). When you plug a guitar into the DI, microphone in channel 1 is disabled.
@kiljoy52236 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply. Hmm the ‘two analog inputs’ wasn’t obvious to me; I watched another review where the reviewer said, I think, there’s a DI input for, say, a guitar. 🤨 I can see that input, on the front left of the interface. The other inputs, on the back, look like the inputs on the Focusrite, which are mic/combo, you can plug a guitar lead in. What I’d like to do is plug my guitar into, say, the Neo Ventilator Pedal and have two (stereo) cables go into an interface so that stereo signal can be converted into digital, DI. I know that’s rather complicated, but I don’t know how to explain it “optical toslink, ADAT up to 8 channels at 48 kHz max or 4 channels at 96 kHz maximum” is a bit cryptic to me, and is that not for digital? I.e not guitar. Thanks again
@kiljoy52236 жыл бұрын
Apparently the guitar input on the front is Hi Z (higher impedance) the two inputs on the back are not, though they could be use for recording guitar, not as good.

I was gonna get the audient 22 but all the talk of latency issues and supposed crashing and all that made me just order a Babyface Pro. I would be recording live guitars and vocals, but apparently if u have a few tracks it becomes an issue? Meaning even if I just record vocals or guitar tracks it would have latency issues? That to me was the deciding factor, because I heard the sound is amazing but idk how much better it is sound wise or different than the baby face pro. What is your opinion between the two interfaces? I could have gotten the 22 for a 100 less than the Babyface Pro but I also heard these devices start going haywire after like 2 years and I would have bought it used. If this was much better sounding than the Babyface Pro , any plugins you recommend to get a nice fat punchy sound? Or is that not doable? Also when it comes to Khz and buffer size, does that affect sound quality? What would be the standard setting be? Im not a newbie song writer, but I am a newbie with all the software , interface , DAW stuff. Im ready to send my songs out and I need just professional stuff that can be sent to other studios maybe for mastering. IDK if khz and buffer only matters in terms of making it work with your computer, or that those setting do affect sound quality in the end. I got the Babyface Pro for 500 so I figure if for some reason I dont like it I can sell it for atleast that much.

Hey Adam, simply question: For a personal home studio which interface do you recommend ¿Audient ID44 or RME babyface pro? The idea is record heavy guitars with two mics and a dry signal for reamp. Regards from México city.
@RealHomeRecording6 жыл бұрын
That's a tough one. The iD44 is the better buy but the Babyface Pro has the better more reliable drivers. If you're doing to reamp then the iD44 with its four line level outputs is the one to get. That way you don't have to monitor with headphones (assuming you are isolated from your guitar speaker room and can preview with speakers). The iD44 (and iD22 before it) having four line outs its probably one of its best features besides the excellent conversion/preamps. Just be aware that there are reports of unstable driver issues with the iD44. I hope to review the 44 at some point to investigate this myself.

I requested an iD44 demo unit on the day it was announced at NAMM 2018. They said I was on the list but I never did get one. Ahh well... Depending on your operating system, the 44 should perform just fine. On a Mac, it is superb. Windows systems can be tricky. If you run this program www.resplendence.com/latencymon and have no issues then you should be good to go. Also, use the USB cable that is included with the interface and not a random one. You should also connect it to a USB 2.0 input if possible NOT USB 3.0.

"This interface you can't really throw a lot of CPU at it before it starts crapping out, especially at lower latencies" Lol wut? What does an interface has to do with how quickly your CPU can calculate and produce audio packets for your interface? The only thing that can affect this by just a tiny bit is the drivers and the audio packet size they set for the USB connection. If your packet size (buffer) is small, your CPU is trying to catch up and calculate everything every x samples. You have to try really hard in order to write drivers that take a hit on the CPU, thus leaving less processing power available to your DAW to calculate audio packets with virtual instruments etc.
@RealHomeRecording6 жыл бұрын
How efficient an audio interface's driver is at a given buffer size is a reality. Please see www.gearslutz.com/board/showpost.php?p=10004672&postcount=8 for more information. There's a reason the ASIO protocol was invented. And there is a reason Mac systems are more stable for recording than Windows based machines. It all has to do with efficiency and stability of the data packet communication that you are referring to. Not all hardware drivers are created equal. RME is the Windows USB audio interface driver king. Lynx are also quite good. The same is true with mixing and higher buffer settings...you can have more CPU usage because better drivers communicate with the rest of the hardware in a better manner.
@DonNETRiNO6 жыл бұрын
@@RealHomeRecording "This interface you can't really throw a lot of CPU at it before it starts crapping out" just quoting your statement again in hope that you can understand how wrong and different from what you said in your reply is. This is entirely based on device driver and the "CPU penalty" of a bad driver is really small. No, you won't be able to use the same plug-ins on a lower buffer setting without dropouts because of an RME driver. You may get some ms better latency but it won't magically increase your CPU abilities

I bought an iD14 for Christmas in 2017. I purchased it primarily to drive my headphones when mixing from my laptop. I like everything about it, almost .................. When I use the encoder to adjust the headphone output level the adjustment is too coarse. The detents cause a 3db adjustment up or down. That sucks. 3db is double power if you go up and half power when you go down. That is unacceptable. Audient really needs to have an adjustment of the range of the detents clicks. I would like to see the ability to make 1 db and even 1/2 db adjustments occur when the rotary encoder moves from detent to detent. It should be really easy to program this. Maybe set it up so that you right click on the software interface headphone adjustment knob and then get a menu that allows you to choose the range of adjustment you want from a single click of the detent on the hardware rotary encoder.

I have 2 DAW's. I built my primary DAW (SONAR Producer X3) which is housed in a 19" rack mount case. It uses an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9775 Quad-Core Processor, 3.2 GHz, 12M L2 Cache, 1600MHz FSB, socket LGA771, 16G of RAM. WIN 7 Professional and SONAR are loaded on a 600GB 10,000 RPM WD Raptor harddrive. All of the audio files are stored on 2 more 10,000RPM drives that are set up on a RAID array and are configured to mirror each other. I use it with two firewire 12 channel ECHO Audiofire 12's and a RAMSA WR T820 mixing console. This system allows me to track 24 channels simultaneously at 24B/96kHz. My laptop is my secondary system and uses WIN 7 and SONAR Producer X1. This rig allows me to walk into a friends house and overdub guitars or track vocals away from my home. I am "right-handed" so when I use my laptop my mouse is in my right hand. My laptop has 3 USB ports. One is on the right side of the laptop and is used by my wireless mouse which is also on the right side. There are 2 more USB ports on the left side of my laptop. I use one of those for the iD14 which is placed on the left side of my laptop. I operate the iD14 with my left hand. The iD14 sounds so much better than the laptops internal audio that I have found myself using the iD14 for everything audio related. I watch KZbin videos and use the iD14 to supply the audio. I am now using the iD14 with my primary system as well for doing mixdowns. I am using it on my primary system the same way people would use a Mackie Big Knob. I have level calibrated my nearfield monitors and even my headphone levels to match those specified by mastering engineer Bob Katz. Mixing at a fixed level allows you to avoid Fletcher-Munson or "equal loudness" EQ issues. If you are not familiar with Sonarworks Reference 4 plugin I would suggest taking a look or a listen. Latvia based Sonarworks makes a plugin that applies corrective EQ to whatever headphones you are using. You can go to their website and use your headphones and hear the difference their software will make. Your headphones have to be one of the models that they have created an EQ contour for but they have done this for the majority of popular studio and audiophile headphones. New EQ profiles are added every few weeks or so. If you have a specific pair of headphones that are not on the list you can send them to Sonarworks and they will test them and create a custom profile. I know all of the pitfalls of mixing on headphones but I have found that my mixes are translating better when mixing on headphones (using the Reference 4 plugin) compaired to mixing on nearfields. Sonarworks is not related to Cakewalk SONAR. I have run into confusion with other people when discussing this topic. I like the freedom of the laptop using the iD14. I do a lot of mixes while sitting comfortably in my bed.

I sent a message to Audients support. Here is an edited screen capture of what the modification could look like. www.flickr.com/photos/109161978@N03/26078069817

Thanks! I did a couple of ALT+Prnt Scrn screen captures and dropped them into MS Paint. I think it took about an hour to do. Creating fonts that matched the font they used is what took the most time. Some of the letters were drawn by hand and don't really look like the ones they used. I made the drawing so that someone else could hopefully visualize my concept. Audients support got back to me within an hour or so of me sending them my suggestion. The guy that responded said that he couldn't promise anything but he would pass along my message to the programmers. He seemed a little hesitant about the .5db increment though. He was worried that if something caused an accidental LOUD volume increase while the encoder was set to .5db, you would not be able to quickly turn the volume down. I told him I understood his concern but maybe you could have the system default to the current 3db change but still allow the user, knowing the risk, to at least have the option to change the level to something smaller than 3db. I'll see what happens. I have done a lot of programming over the years and I'm absolutely sure that a competent programmer could make the changes in a couple of hours or maybe less. I think their biggest concern with changes would be beta testing the software after making the changes. That is what would take time. Audient have a reputation to worry about and would not want buggy software tarnishing that reputation. Maybe I should let them know that I would be more than willing to be a beta tester.

I have and use the iD4 for about 2 months now... it's great, I also felt a difference in converters over my previous M-Audio interface. I also await the promised CPU/Latency performance enhancing drivers, the current performance isn't "bad" ... but I'd say it's a bit sub-mediocre than what I was expecting.... and I wasn't expecting RME league performance!
@RealHomeRecording6 жыл бұрын
Agreed on latency not being an issue. I've recorded bass and MIDI keyboards through it without much issue other than bouncing the keyboard tracks after about three virtual instruments or so. I read that drivers for iD22 and iD14 will be updated but I am not sure about the iD4. We'll see what happens...

"Only has +12dBu of headroom, meaning you should keep your maximum peaks to -12dBFS" Where on earth does that come from? What is this nonsense? Do you know what are you talking about?
@RealHomeRecording6 жыл бұрын
It comes from over 15 years of professional audio engineering experience. Headroom refers to the area between nominal operation level and when the equipment "gives out" and clips. Recording with peaks at -12 dBFS or lower, your recordings will be clean with analog saturation or digital clipping! Better/more professional gear can peak up to -6 dBFS before analog saturation begins to occur. The iD14, not so much. See www.massivemastering.com/blog/index_files/Proper_Audio_Recording_Levels.php for more information.
@DonNETRiNO6 жыл бұрын
@@RealHomeRecording So you are saying that recording an (analog) signal that gets out of the ADC at, let's say, -6dBFS (digital) means that the signal will have "analog saturation or digital clipping". Nice 15 years of professional audio engineering you have there.. Who gives a s*it about the true engineers that manufactured the thing and state +12 dBu (0 dBFS digital) on the manual, right? Cheers to 15 years of professional audio engineering Meanwhile you turn down the DSP "main mix fader" to -20dBFS , essentially reducing the bit depth of the audio stream that feeds the DAC, but yeah, cheers to professional audio engineering for this one too P.s. I see no reply on my other comment for "This interface you can't really throw a lot of CPU at it before it starts crapping out" P.s.2 I really hate misinformation on the Internet, especially on KZbin
@RealHomeRecording6 жыл бұрын
There is a mistake in my above comment. I admit to that. It should have been: "Recording with peaks at -12 dBFS or lower, your recordings will be clean withOUT analog saturation or digital clipping!" A clean recording infers no/little saturation and no clipping. 'll refer you to one of the first videos I put up on this channel about that covers the topic of input levels: kzbin.info/www/bejne/an7Um4N3asqCi5Y So yes, if you record with peaks around -6 dBFS you run the risk of digital clipping because inevitably a vocalist will sing just slightly louder or a drummer might hit their snare just a little harder. So unless you are a fortune teller, set your levels so peaking hits around -12 dBFS. That is the sweet spot on most prosumer audio gear. The whole point of recording at 24-bit is so that you don't have to record so "hot". If you still don't believe me, read through the first 10 pages of this discussion: www.gearslutz.com/board/so-much-gear-so-little-time/463010-reason-most-itb-mixes-don-t-sound-good-analog-mixes-restored.html As for the main mix fader (DAW 1+2) setting, I change it depending on what I'm doing. When recording, it's usually at 0. If I am processing with outboard gear, I use the DAW thru option but make sure my outputs are averaging around -18 dBFS because.that is the level that analog gear expects. When browsing the internet or mastering it is set to -20. Why? Gainstaging. The DAC sounds better when properly gainstaged. Yes, DACs can be clipped just like ADCs can. By setting it to -20, DAC clipping is avoided. At -20 I am losing about 3 bits out of 24. So digital quantization noise is around -120 dB. Reducing the digital fader by -20 dB is simply not an issue. Especially considering the iD14's DAC dynamic range is 114 dB. Cheers to 15 years of experience, indeed. As for your other comments...I can't see them. KZbin may have hidden them (I also didn't get notified of your comment here either, I found it because I am planning an iD14 review update and came to this video). I'll check the spam filter, approve them and reply there.

I used to have an id14 when they first came out and I loved it at the beginning. There was an annoying distorted sound every time I hit 0db like a really loud distorted sound. Like my speakers wanted to blew out. That was unacceptable! I’ve never had an interface that had that. So I got rid of it. Now I have a Focusrite Clarett 2pre and I have no issues whatsoever. Also the id14 had clicks and pops a lot of the time. The driver had problems with Bitwig Studio. Anyways, glad I went with another Interface that works 100% better. The Clarett has the AIR feature that engage the ISA sound on the preamps so I’m golden. Crisp, clear and detailed sound.
@ANSWERTHECALLOFJESUSCHRIST6 жыл бұрын
+Mister Bones Mine does the same as you wrote. No ability to overload the preamps and get a good sound. As soon as it clips, it makes that crackly, sharp, deafening sound that is so horrible. No other interface I own does that. Also, the latency is horrible on my three PCs and the Mac even with the newest drivers. Nothing got better. Worst latency ever in my 16 years of making music. Even my $50 Alva Nanoface has better latency and can handle hot inputs. Same with my Behringer X32 rack. My Zoom TAC-2 has less than 3 seconds RTL at maximum sample rate no matter if on OS X Mountain Lion or the latest High Sierra. I won't get another Audient. First and last one. They have good theories, but in practice, they don't deliver. Sound quality is fantastic, though, and the headphone amplifier sounds clean and clear. I'll probably sell it and get an Apogee Element or something higher end. They blame users' PCs or configurations, but its their drivers that are abysmal. God bless!

SOC 7 I'm using the Focusrite Clarett 2pre Usb right now and it's amazing. I have no complaints about the device. I also have a Presonus Audiobox for backup and it works great.
@ANSWERTHECALLOFJESUSCHRIST6 жыл бұрын
Great! Is the latency acceptable? How is the Air setting? Is it good enough to not need to use EQ sometimes?
@misterbonesbeats4146 жыл бұрын
SOC 7 latency is great on it and the air feature works amazing brings a lot of things to life with the sound that it give them. As for Eq after that all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. I always Eq because I'm used to.

I haven't had any issues with my ID14. I saw another vid where the gain was cranked pretty high on electric guitar through the JFET and it made a nice fuzzy distortion. Obviously you would have to volume compensate.

Maybe you guys should go to professionals if you want opinions on this sort of thing, there is nothing in the price range that will actually objectively, make your stuff sofnd BETTER, complaining or picking apart a product that provides you with what this does for you is a MASSIVE waste of time, you were finally given an affordable interface that gives you a step up in quality......but if that's what you like to do then have at' er
