About this video
In this video Zane from Audio Tech TV (formerly Simple Green Tech) looks at the Audient iD4 MKii which is a premium audio interface. The Audient iD4 MK2 has top of the line AD/DA converters so you'll be getting very high quality recordings with this. Also in the Audient iD4 MKii is a very high quality mic preamp. This is the same mic preamp that's inlcuded in pro Audient consoles. They did not cheap out on the iD4 MKii. Another great feature about the Audient iD4 MKii is iOS compatible so you can connect it to an ipad or iphone and start creating music on the go. In this video I do audio recording tests for recording electric guitar, acoustic guitar and vocals. The Audient iD4 MK2 is a USB-C Audio Interface. If you don't have a USB-C port on your computer or on your iOS device you can get an adapter that will connect it to a USB3 port with no problems. If you want more videos like this be sure to subscribe to Audio Tech TV on KZbin.

@@AudioTechTV I’ve heard a lot of good things about it. I don’t need a massive amount of inputs as it’s just me recording in. I do have one question. What was your experience with the JFET input with no DI box? Obviously it sounds awesome on video but I would like to know your personal experience with it. At the moment I’m using a presonus audio box I2 with a DI box to get a clearer signal but I would like to know what it’s like without having to use a separate DI box.

@@MrLionheart560 I normally record with a DI box but when I tested out the JFET input on the iD4 MKii I was extremely happy with the quality. I won’t use a DI with it as it does a great job on its own. I really like the sound of the guitar plugged directly into it. I haven’t directly compared it with the DI though.

Great video, Zane? I'm recording electric guitar into my Audient ID4 Guitar input and use Logic Pro X. I notice that even when my GAIN is turned completely OFF on the ID4 I still see plenty of 'movement' in the track meter. When I dial up the gain in the ID4 I then see that I can make the signal hotter as the meter goes even higher, but the truth is that the signal is already nearly high enough even with the gain turned OFF. My question is this: Should the track meter show movement when playing guitar even if the interface gain is OFF? Is there still a strong signal coming from the ID4 or should there be ZERO signal if the gain knob is OFF? I would think that there would be no movement at all in the meter as there should not be any signal coming into the track from the ID4 but maybe I'm wrong. I am worried that what I am seeing in the meter (while the ID4 gain is OFF) is possibly a routing issue in the ID4 software (?) but I cannot find anything that might cause this. It seems like 2 signals are getting in there. One when I dial up the gain knob (which is good) and the other from who knows where, or is it just bleeding through from the ID4 somehow. Can you comment on this? I just cannot figure out why this is happening.

Great review!! What should i choose? The price here in Sweden is 15 dollar between EVO 4 and ID4 Mkii (more expensive). - I have Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro 250Ohm headphones, AKG D5 microphone and Edifier 1855DB speakers. I want the device to drive them all for gaming, listening to music and watching videos. - I want to switch audio source between Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro and Edifier 1855DB easy, which one is the best for that? - I want to drive my AKG D5 microphone to a good level without having to go 90-100 % gain. - Can you mute/unmute microphone quickly on iD4 Mkii? You can still use a mic pre with it if you want. Maybe you like the character of your external pre so keep it. But the built in mic pre is very nice. It’s apparently the same mic pre that they include in their studio consoles. It’s the same as the one in my id44 and I use that one often. It has a very nice smooth sound to it. But I do also use an external pre (GAP 73) sometimes too because I like the character on some things.

Hi Zane, I just bought this today based on the many positive reviews and accolades.. however I ran into an issue. Prior to this, my daily driver was an interface from Creative Soundblaster and DAWs with Audio Hijack (from Roque Amoeba) and Adobe Audition. They both can record in stereo with the Creative Interface but for some reason can only output mono with the ID4. This can also be heard clearly when switching the monitor mix between the input (stereo input) and DAW (mono output). Am I missing something? Thanks in advance.
@AudioTechTV
@AudioTechTV 2 жыл бұрын
If you are only recording one input at a time that is mono. Each input is mono on the Audient id4. What is probably happening is you might be trying to record to a stereo track so you would only hear one side. Input one left and input 2 right. When you enable the monitor mix you aren’t hearing it in stereo. You’re hearing it in mono but on both sides. Try recording to a mono track in your DAW of choice and you won’t have the “one side” issue. Some budget friendly audio interfaces will record mono to both sides of a stereo track which is what was probably happening with your sound blaster. All that is doing is doubling up the signal by putting it on the left and right. If you’re using this for music production that may not give you the best sound. So try recording to a mono track and see if that works for you.
@muziknusantara
@muziknusantara 2 жыл бұрын
@@AudioTechTV I actually able to discern between mono and stereo sounds.. for the same piece of recording, the output from the Creative is in distinct stereo separation (output sounds from both the left and right speakers), whereas the output from ID4 is only the left speaker (perhaps MONO wasn't the right description in this instance) - The right channel of the Adobe Audition mixer was empty when displaying the output - meaning it's only recording on the left channel - that's what I meant. I've made sure that the "Audio Channel Mapping' in Audition was correct (as they are usually automatic). The same thing happened with Audio Hijack as well, so it's not an issue with Audition not correctly configured. The system sound was correctly assigned as well. Ah well, perhaps I should stick to Creative. If it's not broken, don't fix it ヅ
@AudioTechTV
@AudioTechTV 2 жыл бұрын
@@muziknusantara is everything from audition only outputting to one side? Or only what you’re recording? If you haven’t tried this yet, import an mp3 or some piece of audio and see if it outputs both sides for that. If it’s only the recording then it’s like I said earlier. You need to record to a mono track. Unless you are recording input 1 & 2 at the same time and you want them to be in the left and right of a stereo track.
@muziknusantara
@muziknusantara 2 жыл бұрын
@@AudioTechTV As mentioned, using Audition and Audio Hijack with Creative Interface will results in stereo recording (both left and right channels outputting discrete sound waves). When switching to ID4 then only one side (channel) is recording. Anyway, I've already consulted Audient and they've confirmed that ID4 is only recording one channel (one side) per input. So it's not really what I'm going for. The local seller refused to accept return even if it was just a day old and I have not registered nor activated the warranty nor downloaded the bundled freebies..(the return policy here is terrible). I should've stick to buying from Amazon with their no-nonsense return policy - just because I wanted to save a few dollars... my bad! Thanks for you help.
@AudioTechTV
@AudioTechTV 2 жыл бұрын
@@muziknusantara with pretty much every audio interface each channel will be mono. Some mixers that have USB interfaces built in will have stereo channels. Your soundblaster sound card likely has a stereo line input as most sound cards do. What most people do for stereo recording in an audio interface is get one that has 2 line inputs or 2 mic inputs and they will connect to it either with a splitter cable or two separate cables. Your id4 does have 2 channels so you could try that but one input is an instrument input so the levels will be different. It sucks that you can’t return it.

hi ,great video and hope you are having a great time right now, I'm plugging my electric guitar directly into the electric guitar input of the audient id4 mkii interface but even when I crank the gain up to max level it still won't clip and at max gain my guitar signal is around -6db. and if I put the gain level at 12 pm the signal will be at -36 which is really low, I haven't changed my strings for months could the low signal be because of that? I don't know if this is normal or not, would be glad if you could guide me please? thank you so much .
@AudioTechTV
@AudioTechTV 2 жыл бұрын
That seems really low. I don’t think it has to do with your strings. Have you tried this guitar with a different interface? Is it really low when you plug it into an amp? What I would suggest is to try another cable to make sure it’s not the cable. Also make sure it’s not your guitars output jack. Wiggle the cable a bit to see if that helps.

@AudioTechTV
@AudioTechTV Жыл бұрын
Audio interfaces typically don’t have mute buttons. You could use the gain control to turn the volume up or down. Or whatever program you are streaming in likely will have a mute button, there might even be a keyboard shortcut to enable and disable mute. I have a usb midi controller that has mute buttons on it and that works for most programs. You could also get an external mixer and connect that to the interface and mixers have mute buttons. If you don’t want to spend more money on something for the task, I recommend looking into the mute options in your software and see if there is a shortcut. As for power button, i’m pretty sure most smaller interfaces don’t have them so if you leave your computer on 24/7, you could either leave it plugged in and turned on 24/7 it shouldn’t hurt it but if you are worried just unplug it and then plug it back in when you’re using it again. The smaller audio interfaces are designed to be connected and disconnected.

They're basically saying the iD4 is great and costs as much as our competitors in this range, but we're gonna short you 1 mic input while our competitors offer 2. Oh, by the way you can pay more and step up to our iD14 model to have 2 mic inputs but then we're gonna remove the physical DI/DAW blend knob.

“Better” is all about personal preference. The mic preamp in this is great. The DI input is excellent too. The converters are also top notch for an interface of this size. So to a lot of people it may sound great as is. If you’re wanting to add compression or EQ on the way in then find a compressor and EQ that you like and record through those to print the sound to the recording. It’s all about personal preference. I tend to record through a Golden Age Project Pre73 mkiii mic preamp and sometimes I’ll add a hardware compressor. Do I need these things? No. But they give me a bit of a different sound and variety. I still record direct sometimes too and then add effects after. If you are having a specific issue with something not sounding good going in then it could be the mic or instrument that you’re using or maybe even the cable that’s connecting them. If you think your source audio is too muddy, maybe your levels are too low. If things are clipping going in then maybe your levels are too high. This audio interface can deliver great quality as is and then you can use software plugins to add the character that you want to all of your recordings.

Is there a difference between id4 & id4 mkii or are they the same?
@AudioTechTV
@AudioTechTV 3 жыл бұрын
There are some differences. They've updated the converters and you get more dynamic range, more headphone power and some other spec updates. If you already own an id4 and are happy with it then there's no need to update but if you are looking at purchasing one and you're deciding between the 2, go with the MKii.

iD4 or Motu m2 ?? which one u prefer and why
@AudioTechTV
@AudioTechTV 3 жыл бұрын
I haven’t tried the motu m2 so I can’t comment on it. But I think if you’re debating between the m2 and an Audient product you might want to consider the id14 as it has 2 mic pres like the m2. And the id14 also has more outputs. I own the Audient id4 and id44 and I’m extremely happy with the audio quality, and the build quality of both units. The Motu looks decent, and has good reviews, it also has midi connections if that’s something you need. The specs look great on it too. You probably won’t go wrong with either choice.

I have an UMC22. Should I upgrade to this one or there aren't noticeable differences?
@AudioTechTV
@AudioTechTV 3 жыл бұрын
There are noticeable differences. However It really depends on what you're recording. If you're making rock music with a lot of distortion and effects then you may not notice the difference as much. But if you want to capture a quality vocal or acoustic tracks, you may want to upgrade. This gives you 24 bit recording where the UMC22 is 16 bit. The mic preamps in this are much nicer and so are the converters. You will capture much cleaner audio with this but whether you should upgrade or not is up to you. The UMC22 can still help you to record decent quality tracks at home and you already have it.

@@simonebarbella4118 with the C1 you likely wouldn’t notice a huge difference. So basically what i want if possible is to play guitar with an expression pedal to emulate a wah wah pedal or whatever effects , through a guitar plugin ( the neural archetype plugins ) ,so you say it’s possible on this audio interface ? Because as far as i can see , there is only the usb port ( that you plug on your pc ) the input for the guitar , the head phone ,and the lxr input right , so where would you plug the expression pedal ? @@paulatreides1354 that pedal that you linked to is a USB midi device. So you would connect it to a separate USB port on your computer. In your software you would enable it in the midi section and then you can assign it to control whatever you want. It all depends on the software you use on how you set it up and get it to work but it should be pretty straight forward with all of them. The pedal company probably has quite a few articles on using it with different software. But your audio interface will be for audio so connect your guitar through that. The pedal is midi and will be configured in your midi settings. You don’t need to plug it into the audio interface.

Audient is an amazing toy, but be aware of driver issues, if you need something stable look somewhere else. I personally had issues with fw update and also find it stuttering on my 2020 MBP from time to time. It is not much, 1-3 seconds and 1-3 times per day, but it is annoying.

I’ve been using my ID44 for quite a long time and haven’t had any driver issues the thing has been super stable with excellent latency always. But I can understand how everyone’s system may be different and settings are all different. So there is bound to be issues with some users but that goes for any interface.
