The Audient EVO range is actually the entry level audio interface range from Audient. However, since the EVO range is more recent the interfaces in that range have some features that the 'old' versions of the iD4 and iD14 did not have. I think that the EVO's are aimed more at podcast folks, whereas the iD's are aimed at musicians.

Nice interface, I've been using it for a week. It works stably on Windows, I downloaded the drivers from the official site, and then the card offered to update the firmware, there were no problems. Lots of volume for headphones and mic, clean preamp, low noise. I like the mute button and the large knob, with one click, can reduce the volume in half. The monitor mix is ​​a very convenient knob for adjusting the volume ratio of music and vocals during recording. The card looks very cool, metal body, cool backlighting. I would like there to be a separate headphone volume control or headphone mute button. I would also like a button to turn off the interface or for it to go into standby mode. Also, software and training courses are given as a gift.

You can actually control plugin parameters with the ScrollControl, not just scrolling the daw. All you have to do is hover over the parameter with your mouse while the iD button is active, and that's it!

Hi Mike great review as always - as for the noisy fans on your computer... have you tried an Macbook or MacMini with M1 chip with 16Gb ram - super, super quiet!! almost no fan noise!

The price here in Sweden is 15 dollar between EVO 4 and ID4 Mkii (more expensive). - I have Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro 250Ohm headphones, AKG D5 microphone and Edifier 1855DB speakers. I want the device to drive them all for gaming, listening to music and watching videos. - How do I connect Edifier 1855DB active speakers? - I want to switch audio source between Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro and Edifier 1855DB easy, which one is the best for that? - I want to drive my AKG D5 microphone to a good level without having to go 90-100 % gain. - Can you mute/unmute microphone quickly on iD4 Mkii? How do you do it?

does that mute button mute the microphone input? It's a shame it doesn't change colour when its muted making the artist aware that their mic is muted.

I have the mk1 but, presuming it's the same, then default the middle pot sets the balance between input and daw. There's also an option to split the input and daw to left and right headphone channels.

@@simonebarbella4118 I like my mk1 a lot, I only have 1 complaint: the headphone amplifier seems to have quite high output impedance. So with my 80ohm headphones it sounds great, but if I want to use some in-ears that are 20-ish ohms then it seems to reduce the bass that I'm hearing. If you were using higher impedance headphones then I'm sure it wouldn't be an issue - and I can't speak to whether this mk2 version is the same. The only other model that was released that I figured i'd replace my id4 with (if anything broke / it got damaged) is the Motu M2 - www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/M2--motu-m2-2x2-usb-c-audio-interface It reviews well, I believe the headphone output impedance is lower and I like the higher fidelity meters. Hope this helps.

I think it comes down to personal preferences. If you can make your mic work with the iD4, and you're fine with a simple setup, this is totally enough. The sound that comes out of it is great, its just lacking comfort features. You can still use a fethead if you want that extra volume. The thing is: Once you have invested in a ton of stuff, like a fully foamed sound booth and a room full of tech, the iD4 will look like a babys toy.

A treated room or booth. I’m assuming you don’t want a colored sound for just voice over, otherwise I’d suggest a standalone pre (Neve, warm audio, etc...) I’d go even further and suggest an external compressor to control peaks and lift lower frequencies. Plugins can do this too, but not as accurate as hardware (imo). Treating your room/booth should be the very first thing you do and I can’t stress that enough. Hope this helps

@@Prodby_duke I have the ID14 (newest version) and that’s all I need. My room has one wall that’s treated and I work closely to the mic. I have ok technique so don’t feel I need anything else. I add a little software compression and slight EQ and I’m good. Well good enough for what I need. Though thank you for the recommendations as for some people that will be very useful

Just got to finish the basic of my BRoom Studio everything hooked up with Great MID-Range $$ equipment of which is a 20 years ago Russian Mics req 48+ P power and a mic similar to the SM7B (Golden Age D2) not 48+ P power. Using a brand new Presonus 1824C USB interface plugged the mic into it having 65 Db of gain I htought surely it would power the D2 mic. NOT. Barely audible dimed. Just hooking in the New TASCAM 16 Studio Console Hybrid I plugged in into IT then main outs to the mic input to the INTERFACE. OMG ! It is a WONDERFUL FULL SOUND with plenty of headroom to spare using only 60% gain and main out from the console. I also just ordered a $100 Art Tube MP Project Series Tube Microphone/Instrument Preamp to get away from the console if need be. Thanks MIKE D.

Hi! I'm looking to get an Audio Interface for recording Audiobooks and Voiceovers. This is a home set-up with a Windows 10 laptop, in an untreated room. So, Can use only Dynamic Mics like SM58 or Rode Procaster. CLEAN PREAMP GAIN and LOW NOISE is prime requirement. I've shortlisted the Audient ID4 MK II and the MOTU M2. Both are at same price here in Mumbai, India. The additional mic input in the M2 is useful in case i decide to work on two person narration or interviews. Which would you recommend? Also, i have an option of very sparingly used ID4 (old version) for half the price! Thanks in advance!

@Vincent James Voice Thank you so much for your detailed and informative response. I have already finalised the ID14. Its on it's way. As for the dynamic mics [it's actually a friend's Shure Beta 58a amd not the SM58, if that makes any difference], the choice was based on a preliminary online research on recording in noisy conditions. I live in a Mumbai apartment (think Downtown NYC). I would love the range and warmth of what a condensor mic brings but not sure how i can cut out the unwanted cityscape. Definetly cannot dedicate an entire room and soundproof it. Please advice. Thanks in advance.

@Vincent James Voice I did look up rhe Deity S2 and MKH 416. They sound like a dream. It don't really have a walk-in closet room; got wardrobes instead. I work as a screen actor; so i was able to ask some sound recordists about the shotguns mics. They said they might be able to share a used piece for me to test out. Still not sure about the extra noise. What do you make of the Shure SM7B / EV 320 / Presonus PD-70 as alternatives? Thanks for your patience and support.

@Vincent James Voice Ok. Will go ahead with the shotgun mic plan. And also work on some kind of acoustic booth. I did listen to some dynamic mic tests online. The only one that sounded decent was the EV RE-20. But that's 400$! Will keep you updated.

a lot of entry level interfaces on market can drive SM7B, they might need like 5-7 Db in post processing but they are very usable.

Funny. A year later I just seeing this video for the first time. I bought the iD4(1) absolutely ages ago. I bought it as a noob just starting out. I'm still a noob, just no longer "starting." I bought it for a specific reason(s) Noise threshold, Clean sound, 1 mic - I am not a musician and did not intend to podcast interviews from my desk with other people, so paying for extra mic input option made no sense to me. Few of the alternatives offered anything better. Mike I get the feeling that you were holding back and this didn't tick "all the boxes" for you. Now, a year on I'm curious as to why, and if you've changed your mind?

Can't fault it.I've not heard or seen any "youtube" videos about compatibility issues with various platforms so... tentatively? If you have the right drivers installed? No? 🤷‍♀

If you want to connect a Mic and a computer and you're not an absolute sound professional, then get a USB mic with an XLR for the future and get on with your life, unless it's important to you what other people think of your choice in gear. the SM 7b is not for you, just keep moving along

For a good usb mic you have to pay as much as interface+xlr mic. You don't have any upgrade path with usb mic. Cheap usb mics have really noisy preamps and the point is to not use any noise removal on discord because that sounds really bad.

While this is the case for many, so many USB mics with XLR options actually sound WORSE on XLR. And the Shure SM7b is not the be-all-end-all ONLY mic to use. There are many great ones out there for cheaper. It just so happens to be a fantastic mic to use for showing off the gain capacity and noise level of microphone preamps.

@@ee1yd Why would they think that. I've had an account with videos for years.I will admit when I'm wrong however. The price I was quoting was in CANADIAN dollars which I only noticed later. So on American site as per Sweetwater the Audient is $269 while the xenyx is $99. When I bought my Xenyx, many years ago, it came with original drivers which were superb. Since then they were removed and they offered only 3rd party software which was by and far lousy.

@@guitarstrunged If you check the links in the description you will see that it's being sold for $199. Which is absolutely worth it, because the preamp and build quality are much better than the Xenyx (which I have too).

@@SjorsHoukes If I had the choice I think I'd pick the Xenyx because of the added features but $140 is a lot more reasonable. (Though there were 2 models.Sure we are talking about the same one?) Question: If you already have a Xenyx (and if it's working of course) why would you buy another model?

@@guitarstrunged That something is functional does not mean that it's necessarily good at what it does. The Xenyx is a mixer, and not what they call an interface. An entry level one at that. That means that the preamp is not great because that's not where the focus lies in the construction. Yes, you can record mic and it has phantom power, but the sound will not be neutral, the noice floor will be higher etc. I'm a professional voice actor. I need my expensive mic to sound great and clean, so I'm opting for a dedicated interface.
