So what you are talking about is in 2001, Metallica was in San Francisco and went to The Presidio, a former military barracks and began recording St. Anger. They never finished those recordings because James Hetfield went to rehab. They are essentially the beginnings of St. Anger and when you see the documentary Some Kind of Monster, you get a glimpse of those recordings. They were never officially release, but I am sure you can find those recordings. Some snippets were used for the St Anger album, the rest were demos.

Creeping Death is actually about the seven plagues that Egypt went through in the Bible. Story goes that James and Cliff were watching the movie The Ten Commandments one time and basically went "Huh, that would make a cool idea for a song" and one of the classic metal songs of all time was born

I just want to say, if there is any song where a fade out perfectly fits a song and its purpose it's fade to black The song about suicide, fade out into nothing, much like life ending before it's time, the solo ends despite flowing with life and even getting second winds, either way, it still 'fades to black' Edit: clearly I wrote this before the fade to black discussion, but for me this is an exception among fade outs that just fits for me

I like to think the opening riff to ride is an attempt to mimic a lightning flash, on a guitar. That's why it sounds so "jagged" and "sharp". 🤟
@boots_33
@boots_33 9 ай бұрын
I think part of why the FIRST instance of that riff is tough for people to listen to is because the tom hits happen on the back beat of the rhythm. If yer counting 1-2-3-4, the first hit happens on the "4" and leads into the start of the song repeating on the "2" and "4." When the riff happens again at the end of the song, it comes in on the "1," which ends up feeling like a more natural transition in context.

On the Fade to Black solo, Kirk is actually improvising a lot more these days, it has been the case for a few tours now and he mentionned that in his recent interview with Rick Beato. Interesting song to check out live, post 89 I would say. Interesting 12 strings used in 93/94, James now using an electronic guitar with both 6 strings and 12 strings sound to play the acoustic part.

His legendary solos of years past were actually written! Kirk's improvisation on the last few albums just hasn't turned out well. That is partly why I think his solo EP Portals is so good. He actually gave it thought and composed the tracks. I would say his EP would make for a good shorter reaction video, but it's Patrick's favorite, instrumentals! 😂

Just a quick thing about James' vocals. He treats them like an instrument. He writes the vocal melody first, then writes the words that fit that melody. He some times adds another syllable to a word at the end, that creates that trademark Hetfield "AH" at the end of words.

About the 'what Metallica do and don't play live' part of the conversation.. I got into Metallica around 2007 when i was about twelve years old, and since then I have seen them live 4 times. Each time I saw them i felt they played really compelling setlists that shuffled things up quite well. I'll put the 4 unique sets I saw down below, i think it'll paint a pretty clear picture of what you can expect to see if you ever see them live. Live Auckland New Zealand 2010. 1. I worked at a recording studio in Omaha Nebraska for 7 years and one of the things we worked on the most was speech editing. I really enjoy Ride the Lightning's sound because it is so different from what we associate with metal today. Like a lot of early heavier music, it has this violence to it because it abuses a sound made for a different kind of rock. The music feels like it's doing something it shouldn't be doing, which is thrilling, and James' shouty vocals are a part of it. Another famous band that pushed against the boundaries of what was common in production is Nine Inch Nails. A more recent example may be Low.

"Escape" was a last-minute composition that the band had to throw together for Ride the Lightning because the label wanted there to be one more song on it. Thus, the only time they ever played the song was during their 2012 Orion festival, when they played Ride the Lightning in its entirety. IMO the song is not only the weakest on the album, it very much doesnt fit in with the rest of the album...

The lead guitar sound that you love on Fade to Black is a wah pedal engaged but left in the “up” position so the highs are cut. It has a super warm sound and it’s perfect for the solo. Also, I agree with your feelings on Call of Kthulu. I love the song, but agree that it feels like it drags on… listen to “Cliff the lightning” and it will change your mind. It is a fan-made remix on KZbin that raises Cliff Burton’s bass in the levels and it adds SO much to the mix. It’s a much more interesting song with the bass levels raised. Glad you re-did this reaction. Looking forward to when you do Garage Inc

Two thoughts spring to mind with the discussion you guys had at the end of Fade to Black, both about the artistic merit of fading out the solo and another example of a song stopping instantly as a representation of death. I've always seen this song as being less about suicide itself and more the emotional and mental health descent that precedes it. The fading to black isn't consciousness fading away, but the sense of self, the sense of connection, the sense of purpose. He's giving up on life. So, when the solo kicks in and brings so much energy & passion, only to fade out, it's like Kirk is channeling all the family & friends of the protagonist who are trying to reach him, to bring him out of this funk. He is trying so desperately to get through and bring this episode to a happy ending, but it's all for not. Maybe the mind and body are still working, but this PERSON is gone. He, and the music, have faded to black. Now for something even more sad. Yay! In an example of an album ending with a heart-wrenching representation of a real-life tragedy, Blind Melon released an outtakes compilation album called Nico in 1996, a year after the death of lead singer Shannon Hoon from a cocaine overdose. The final track on the album is a song called "Letters from a Porcupine" and is an answering machine recording from Hoon to a band member playing acoustic guitar and singing a new song idea. Just shy of 2 minutes, in the heart of the action, everything stops dead and all we're left with is the beep at the end of the answering machine message. It's such a gut punch to experience as a perfect representation of a life ending so suddenly, right in the middle of his creative endeavours. I've never heard a posthumous album end on such a haunting note, and frankly, I'd be happy if I never experience anything quite that poignent again. I'm one of the long-time Metallica fans who discovered this channel through this series, and I'm glad you returned to Ride the Lightning. It's cool seeing how the perspectives have changed, both in liking more things now with practiced ears, and in having more context and nuance in describing the things you don't like. Great reviews hit the positives and the negatives, and this one did that in spades. Cheers!

Just some random facts/tidbits/answers as I listen to this: •The entire album is in standard guitar tuning, but it's actually slightly higher pitched than that. The two theories I've always heard were that they did it to make it sound tighter, or that they had to do it to match the anvil hammer pitch (the "bell") in For Whom the Bell Tolls. The tuning is actually really annoying because if your guitar is correctly tuned to standard E tuning, it will sound ever so slightly off because you're slightly out-of-tune lol •The middle fast riff (before/after the solo) in Ride the Lightning was written by Megadeth's Dave Mustaine, as well as the intro for Call of Ktulu. If you ever do Megadeth reactions and hear Hangar 18, its intro has the same exact notes. (Actually, he also wrote the original Four Horsemen riff too, so both bands have a version of that exact song) •The distorted intro to For Whom the Bell Tolls is Cliff's bass. The horror-y squeals at the end are guitar, and they usually end the live version with Kirk going heavy on the wah/squealing guitar solo while everyone else holds on a final note in the background before •On the topic of For Whom The Bell Tolls being based on a novel, One is based on Johnny Got His Gun. Metallica also purchased rights to the movie for them use in their music video for On, which was the first music video they ever made •By 2010, Kirk started improvising the middle of the Fade to Black guitar solo at every show and has been very open about it. The beginning and ending are played the same, but the middle is a bit different each time •One cool thing about Metallica that I don't see too often is that they change up portions of their setlist every show. Yeah, they'd still hit their Sandman, One, Master of Puppets every show, but they'd change the thrash song(s), the opener, the cover song, the deep cut, the instrumental if they're doing one, etc. at every show. Their current tour has them playing two entirely different setlists every weekend with zero repeats from night to night •They won a Grammy for their Call of Ktulu performance with the symphony, and I think you'll love the extra dynamics when you get there. Same for The Outlaw torn since it adds so much more depth and feeling to the song. I just wish the bass was even more pronounced on the Ktulu remaster (and symphony version) because the constant similar-but-unique bass fills in every verse and the evil-sounding distorted wah is what defines the song's Lovecraftian horror theme Late edit: For Chris' definition of a perfect album, Justice is my personal candidate. That said, a lot of metalheads would credibly argue Master is a masterpiece album. Hell, I only follow a couple of reaction creators, and I've repeatedly heard them suggest that you could take any song off of Master and put it on a non-Metallica-tier metal band's album, and it would immediately be the best song on the album, if not their best song overall. Even if I prefer Justice, I can see exactly where they're coming from

Regarding playing just the hits versus deeper cuts, Iron Maiden have a novel approach. For the past 20 years they've tended to alternate tours between classics and new stuff. They'll do a tour focused on their new album and then follow it with a tour focused on 80s stuff. They played their 2006 album A Matter of Life and Death in full on its tour; it ruffled some feathers.

Ktulu live from 2017 will make much more sense to you since you can see and hear what the song is all about and is bass lines that are emulating Cthulhu's awakening and/or calling

Regarding Punk Vocals, that's the essence of Thrash Metal, NWOBHM guitars meets punk attitude and vocals. Worth reminding that James is also a skater and must have been influenced by the skatecore scene that was pretty much born at the same time as bay area thrash.

As much as I love Creeping Death on this record, this might be their most iconic live track, at least when Jason was in the band. I will listen to any live version of this song from 89-00 over the original any day. His backing vocals and lead vox for the last verse make this his song, truly. Nowadays the backing vox are still okay with Rob, but James ALWAYS lets the crowd sing the whole last verse. I love to imagine it's a tribute to their greatest member, imo. Check out Creeping Death live! It's incredible

Trapped Under Ice is actually supposed to have a sci-fi slant to it... the idea is that a guy in cryosleep (maybe during long distance space travel) suddenly realizes he is conscious and cannot move his body and is trapped bodily.... "trapped under ice." It apparently is a fear of James's or something because he revisits this idea again in One of being trapped in your own body and unable to communicate or cry out.

I think when you watch the Live Sh*t Videos instead of listening to the live album (btw the CD has for some reason the better sound quality but there a videos with "Live Sh*t audio" in the title wich are awsome) you understand Metallica a lot more because you see who makes which sound and how all instruments and band members compliment each other

Ok, so I think people are all about Creeping Death, at least partly, because the main riff is just one of the quintessential thrash metal riffs. Like, about as perfect a metal riff as humans can write.

Yea, sadly Metallica did not leave a lot of room for the bass but if you listen to some bass heavy remasters it's awesome and I DO recommend you guys listen to those in to the new year. I know it won't be wav quality but it still is an experience to hear what Cliff is doing on bass w/o having to squint your ears.

At 57:00 ish where you mention about the guitar sound on Master of puppets and there is a frequency you wish you could take out. On Master of puppets the guitars were tuned at 435hz instead of the standard 440hz. This is why when most people play along it always sound 'slightly' out of tune or just not quite right. They also did a lot of recording parts slow and speeding back up on KEA and RTL which may be what your ears are picking up. Great show by the way have been listening along to all of your Metallica episodes 🤘

Fade to Black is absolutely not on S&M or S&M2 Also you’re absolutely right, that song does have the piano or keyboard during the verses. James included it so that his vocals sound better or to help him…I don’t know the full story
