I have 2 of these. People dnt give these turntables credit where the credit is do. Ive been in the game for a while, and I've had my feel with all types of turntables. These bad boys hold it down. I never had a problem scratching, or mixing or anything. I love it. Perfect substitute. Buy Butter rugs and an upgraded cartridge and you'll find these quite superb.

+kendo512 Hehe yeh, he did make a good argument in this video didn't he? I'v bought mine shortly after my post above and I love this Un. I use it every day and if I have to make a guess it has 500-600 hours under it's belt by now. There's a couple of things to be said though, things that can put you off (but really shouldn't) and some of which isn't covered in this video. It really shouldn't stop you from being excited about wanting to buy this table and is only meant for you to take note of, but I think they are good to know. - The big one. Something you will notice immediatly when turning on the turntable is the soft humming noise comming from the motor. It shouldn't be there and this really scared me at first. After strolling the forums I learned that's just the way it is with this turntable. However, I don't experience any adverse effects that I can notice. Noise like this can make it's way to your speakers, but for that to happen you need a much better arm and a much better needle ... or so I was told. You problably need a fairly expensive amplifier and speakers as well. For a first turntable it's not a problem. - If you do a bit of research on hifi forums you might notice that a good deal of people recieved a warped platter. While it is no problem to trade it in for a proper one this is obviously not something you want to happen to you. I checked the platter in store when I bought mine and it turned out fine, but it is a problem they knew about in that store. Ask to check the platter before you take it home. - The cartridge+needle that comes with the turntable is really good, especially considering the price should you want to replace it in the future. It's is not a scratch needle though and it is not suited for 78 rpm. That's a really old speed though so if listening to your records is all you want to do though this is an amazing default needle. - The cartridge/needle comes pre-installed in the headshell, but mine wasn't lined up perfectly. To get the most out of it, use the "technics (bearwald) arc protractor" found on www.vinylengine.com/cartridge-alignment-protractors.shtml None of these things will stop you from enjoying this turntable right out of the box. The notes I made here are good to know before you buy it, but I can't stress enough this is a really good buy and none of the above should stop you from wanting one. For the price the only turntable that will top it in terms of sound quality is the "Project essential II". Those turntables have a very different look though (and I love the technics 1200 look, so for me it was a nogo) are annoying to use and you are only going to enjoy that "better" sound if you have a soundsystem to match it, which means you need a 400 dollar amplifier and 400 dollar speakers (per pair) to go with your turntable. It also doesn't have a build-in pre-amplifier, so if the soundsystem you have now doesn't have a phono-stage you need to buy a seperate pre-amplifier (starting at 50 dollars) or a new amplifier. The audiotechnica however can be plugged directly into your PC-speakers, or any of the in-channels on your current sound system :) Which brings me to one last thing to note. Like I said the 1200 LP has a build-in preamplifier. Some amplifiers also have a build-in preamplifier for turntables (the socalled phonostage). If you use them both this will give a very loud and ugly sound and it is bad for your speakers. If you want to use the pre-amp in you amplifier, set the turntable to "phono" with the switch on the back (the "phono / line" switch). If you don't have a phono-stage, set that switch to "line". There might be an exception to that; powered speakers. The kind of speakers often used by DJs have a build-in amplifier as well. If you use your turtable with those kinds of speakers, I believe you shouldn't use the preamp in the turntable. Not sure though, I have no experience with those kinds of speakers. As rule of thumb, allways test at a low volumes and the switch set to "phono". You can allways take it up a notch. I hope this was helpfull and that I didn't bother you with info you don't really need. Anyways, enjoy this table, you won't be disappointed :)

Hey mate thanks for this write up, I really appreciate it. I actually bought the thing pretty much 30 minutes after commenting last night. But I got it online, so I won't be able to check the platter unfortunately. The service I used looks pretty reputable though, so I'm sure I'd be covered if it's a dud. Your comment about the needle is slightly disappointing because I do intend to scratch eventually (have to save for a mixer first). In this video, didn't the reviewer mention something about balancing the counter weight to make the default needle more suited to scratching? If it doesn't work out though I guess I'll just shell out a little bit more cash for a better needle.

kendo512 Yes you can increase the needlepressure so it won't skip so easy. I have no idea how long the needle will last when you do that though, because not only do you add weight beyond what it was designed for, you also add motions it shouldn't cope with. At best you shorten it's lifespan, but you might also break it sooner or later. You should ask around at forums to learn what people's experience are scratching with this needle, take your time. A decent starter scratching needle + cartridge + headshell is just about as expensive as what you get with this turntable (about 60 dollars). For you it might be a good idea to buy such a setup, because should you break the default needle that will set you back by that ammount anyway. With the second headshell it's really easy to change out your needle between listening and scratching sessions and those two needles will last you a long time.

Could it be the platter? On the 12 the platter is part of the motor so there would be less slippage and loss of momentum. While on others, the platter is separate from the motor but driven by the output shaft on the platter mounting points? This is like the Cadillacs that came with a viscous clutch in the torque converter instead of the graded impeller inside the automatic transmission to reduce power loss through the driveline and improve fuel efficiency.

ive owned one of these tables for about two years hooked up to my dj controller and my scratchy seal record lives on it. it definitely slows down when scratching but you can learn to nudge it forward after your scratch. good for beginner turntables awesome for mixing built like a tank.

Ok, I dig it. Alot of these TTs are offered as Belt drive and Direct Drive in the same chassis. The housing of the 240 & 1240 looks the same. Like the Numark 1510s & 1520s or Gemini PT-1000/1100 & PT-2000/2100. The lower number being BD and the higher number being DD. In essentially the same case. My problem Kareem is that people keep saying you cannot cut on these 120s. I think you can cut on anything.

The ST-150, AT LP1240 and the Synq Xtrm1 seem to be all the same machine. Now what interests me is the STR-80 also appears to be the same machine in a silver case with straight arm. Also Audio Technica...weird item: used to offer this same model as the PL120. Both models come up on a Google Search with some still out labelled PL120 while the newer ones would be LP120.

One more issue on the LP120, Blaze, that I find just puzzling is the locking tab on the tone arm height adjuster. It doesnt actually lock the tone arm height. You can still dial the arm up or down with the tab engaged. And this is on a brand-new, fresh out of the box unit. I think the clean cloned 1200 look of the 120 endears me more to it than its actual build quality. I do think the Pro TTs are real 12 competitors, unfortunately NOT ONE of any non-Panasonic 1200s has any resale value.

Is the USB cable just for recording live in your laptop, or does this has to go through a Native Instruments audio card so you can play it with traktor? What I mean is: If you use a NI timecode Vinyl and you plug the turntable to the computer will it work like that? (kinda like HID mode)

what all the setting on you tone arm i scratch and it skips during faster hand movements like fast babys are chirps etc im useing the at95e cart not the old at 2 you got on yours now is it better cuase you cart tacks more weight my tone arms is at 0 antiskate and 2.5 weight and height is at 3 what is the deal with the needle skipping

One plus is the Line control switch on the unit rear for use on cheap receivers with simple RCA ins(no gronds) on the back. One minus is that the ones I have have some unevenness in the platter rotation. Both of them seem to have a specific wobble to them. I dont know if this is their casting process or if it is how they rotate on the spindle. A Minus is that pitch speed isnt absolutely accurate BUT it is consistent enough. Not as good as the Numark Pro TT-1s(-2s) but really good.

I had a crappy sherwood belt-driven 1200 derivative on which the dots under the strobe would never ever stay completely still, they went back and forth, and it was noticable aurally. Can i expect any such issues with this? Also, does the target light get hot if you leave it on?

i have these turntables, and i've been using real vinyl for months. but they don't have ground wire. and i just bought a dvs and there is coming an awful tone out of my speakers, it's the sound the vinyl makes when the needle is on the coded record and the platter is spinning, a beep. when you turn of your speakers you can hear that sound coming from the record. but it isn't normal that that same sound comes out of my speakers. what can i do about this? peace

+Roberto Arêas You still need an audio interface. The usb is only used to transfer a vinyl collection to digital. You still need a Serato or Traktor or VDJ compatible soundcard or mixer... The TTX USB is good... The other numark turntables are still unproven. The best bang for the buck turntable is the Epsilon turntable that I reviewed which is $250 each!

+Roberto Arêas Yup, you will always need the audio interface. So there is many mixers with it inside already like the Traktor Z2, the Rane Mixers and the Pioneer Mixers, but as you said, those are pretty expensive. There are other cheaper models out there but most of those will only work with cheaper software. I dont know of any stores in Europe... Good Luck!

Hey DJ Blaze which one should I buy the LP 120 or the pox 500. Im looking for an introductory turntable that can handle some scratching. Im not a scratch DJ but, I like to practice tho. I am a bedroom DJ, I mix and blend songs together and thats really about it. I set on the Pioneer MK-250 Mark II because it is a Rekordbox controller and I made my switch from Traktor to Rekordbox.

awesome vid. everything i needed to know..... well...almost.I just bought and unboxed one of these. I have the shure M477 needle on there and when attempting to scratch, the record skips. I have changed the position of the counterweight on the swing arm, but i read somewhere that putting too much weight on the needle will screw up the needle and your vinyl.....true?

The Shure is designed to track between 2 and 3.5 grams if memory serves me. Balance the arm carefully - ie set to zero so it floats at record level then apply downforce. 2.5g as a minimum I suggest.

OK, Brother Blaze, I have fiddled with these LP120s for about a month and I would say that these are fascinating new age phono. But a couple of things that bothered me was when unboxing one of them, the tone arm locking clamp broke off, immediately. That was BS. Um, the slipmat must be a friction enhancer because the platter does slow during scratching with it on. Recommending using low friction slipmat, homemade if possible. I used glossy newspaper circulars. Otherwise, it is very nice.

I remember when I was young in the 80s guys in my zone would have SL-Q202s, SL-D3s, SL-D2s, SL-BD33s. Some were Technics some were alternatives. I mean, in those days you needed to have a good rep before you could pay $600 for ONE record player(SL-1200). Guys used to do parties with JVCs and Pioneers, straight arms, belt drives, you name it. We would make a slip mat using cardboard or old record covers. Didnt need to slipcue, just hold the groove and backtrack as needed.

Spike I reviewed the 1240 model as well on the channel... Check it out... The 1240 is better than this in every way... build quality, sound, reliability, etc...

I have a question that I would love to have answered!!!!!!! Can this turntable, out of the box play music? Assuming of course I have a record. Like can JUST the turntable play music, I don't have money for mixer equipment or receivers or whatever. I'm not big into having a bunch of wires dangling and such. Hopefully this thing has a BUILT IN speaker of some sort that gives you that record sounding vibe, if you know what i mean..

jiffijaffi Wrong... you need an amp or a receiver or a mixer then to powered speakers if you don't use an amp. The amp in the turntable is just to bring the volume up to Line level... You still need a speaker setup
