AT-LP120 vs SL-1200 Comparison (Part 2)

This is part 2 of my comparison between the Audio Technica LP120, and the Technics SL-1200. As mentioned in the description of my previous video (Part 1), I've noticed a significant influx of people on KZbin as well as numerous online forums stating that the LP120 is a better turntable than it's original predecessor, the Technics SL-1200. These videos are intended to educate the obvious differences between the two decks. Of course the SL-1200 is better, but there's a lot of false information that is being said online, and it's important that the truth is presented. Both Part 1 & 2 of this video comparison is not a traditional comparison. The purpose of both Part 1 & 2 has nothing to do with the cost between the turntables, so please refrain from bringing this up.
A lot of points that were made in this video, were already demonstrated in a couple other videos that I've previously released, but it appears that it's going to be better that these points are all demonstrated within the same video. I've also included a couple of other key points, that I did not demonstrate in my previous comparison video, along with one new disappointing discovery.
Also, for those of you wondering, I did request the anti-skate to be fixed when I sent it back to AT for repairs. I mentioned it on the phone multiple times before I even sent it back. It was documented on my phone call and the paperwork upon return. Why they didn't fix it is beyond me. When I explained that it clearly didn't work, they snickered and said, "Well you can send it back again, and we'll fix it right next time." Since I heard no serious or professional tone in their voice, I refrained from paying another 75.00 to ship it out when I already requested it once before. The bottom line is, unless you test your anti-skate on a flat (groove-less) surface like an Anti-Skate Calibration Disc or a CD, you will not know if yours properly works. The LP-120 was made cheaply enough that most of them likely don't work.

Hey what is the exact model of the Technics SL 1200 that you tested here. As this original post is 4 years old many changes have been made. Thank you for pointing out the information that is very useful.

My dad has a Technics SL-1200 from 1990 and it still works perfectly today 30 years later! He mainly now uses it for digitising vinyl records from his collection and it does a perfect job of it as he currently has an expensive professional grade stylus on it which makes it extremely ideal for digitising records! :)

The 120 had since been discontinued but I just got me the new 120x USB and I used a CD to test the anti skate and it actually works! The arm starts sliding when I adjust the antiskate knob one way and the arm moves the other way when I twist the knob the opposite way and when I adjust it right it stays in one place! I'm glad I never considered the old 120 (because I was aware the antiskate wasn't functional) but I'm happy to report Audio Technica fixed the antiskate issue with the 120x.

I'm glad to hear the new one actually works. Hopefully it stays that way, because mine worked (in a way) in the beginning before it completely went out. AT really should have been all over this a long time ago, and the fact that 10+ years went by with millions of poor products sold, myself and many others got suckered into the lies. I'm just relieved that I learned from my mistakes and can be a voice to others.

I will say, the new 120's aren't that great either, even with anti-skate funtioning. The build quality seems even worse than the original 120 and the motor failed on mine after just 2 years. Save yourself the hassel and just get a Technics. I got the SL-1200MK3D and couldn't be happier.

Hi, the anti skate adjustment is working perfectly in my LP120X USB, just like the Technics. May be LP120 had this issue. Thanks a lot for this video. My calibration was way out (the arm was moving away to the edges). Did the calibration with a CD as shown in your video. Thanks again.

Very good comparison and the reason the Technics is a better turntable is that it was made in Japan versus the Audio-Technica that is made in China. I have an SL-1800 from 1979 and it still works and sound like brand new.

Thanks so much. Excellent comparison. I owned both sets of turntables for mixing in my DJ days. No comparison. The Technics does out perform period, as it should at these price points. It would be interesting to see how Audio -Technica’s best would do. The AT-LP 1240 for instance. Mostly to see if the anti-skate is rectified in that model, wow flutter and frequency response. I do too, and this is why I've been able to keep my now "vintage" system for over 30 years (with minor or no major fixes or repair). My belt driven German manufactured turntable, despite its years of use, still performs magnificently. I only wish it had a 78 speed. Over the years, I've been gifted numerous very vintage shellac records. I'd like to purchase another turntable which includes 78rpm, but it seems AUDIO TECHNICA has overrun the market. I'm in no rush. Anyway, there are many of us who trust your evaluations. Those Doubting Thomases, well, good you addressed them. I found it comedic. As far as 78 rpm playback, Technics recently released their MK7 model which has a 78 rpm playback. I think we will see more of Shellac playback options coming back. I dunno where else to get this question answered, but a long time ago I was looking for a turntable before settling on the LP120. I came across an old model that used some kind of mechanism under the platter that reduced jostling causing the record to skip. It wasn’t magnetic, as far as I remember, but it looked pretty standard- I think a wooden frame- but it was that key element in the platter? I don’t know where I’d be able to find it, since it was half way across the country.

Great video Chad! Apples and Oranges. Japanese quality vs Chinese cheap labor and parts. And it shows. Both brands have there place!! The AT people aren't ever going to admit that there are too many issues with Chinese turntables. They are PRICE FIRST consumers. The lower the better. I recently got the Technics SL-1200GR. After 3 years of looking at dozens of tt's I upgraded from my 1983 Technics SL-QX300. Sticking with Technics. And after 35 years my start/stop button has NEVER gone down on my SL-QX300. Just sayin'.

I have this AT-LP120. Everything you are saying here is true! I've never seen such a cheap piece of $hit! I took out the preamp, raised the platter height by adding a cork and acrylic mat and lowered the cartridge with a shim...installed a heavier counter weight on the tone arm...changed the cartridge wires with silver ones..about to in install an MP-110 cartridge....as for the anti-skate. I've ordered the "upgrade" spring for the tone arm that I'll have to install myself. I got this TT as a gift. I wish I had never started customizing it and just chucked it and bought a better made TT. That being said...I've manged to get this piece of crap to sound pretty darn nice.

@@cjsvinyl I've had belt driven TT's in the past. I'm 61 years old. I've had some nice one's. They came and went... Going thru buying houses and raising kids...time slips away. Thank God I took good care of my vinyl albums, which I have plenty! Now I need to figure out how to sneak a better TT into the house and what to do with this Audio Technica Frankenstein. It's really not that bad now. I like the Fluance TT's I'd go up a lot more than the one you recommended. Right now I'm running this TT through an Adcom GTP- 500 preamp or a Schiit Manin....into an Adcom GFA-555 high current amp and into some massive JSE Ifinite Slope model 2 speakers... Thank you.

Amigos yo tengo un SL-1800 MK2 Technics desde 1983 y la verdad que estos platos son eternos, este modelo fue lanzado al mercado junto con el SL-1700 MK2 (Semi automático) y el SL-1600 MK2 (Automático). El SL-1800 MK2 era manual. Al año del lanzamiento sacaron de producción el SL-1800 MK2 y sacaron el 1200 MK2. Diferencias entre ambos: El Pich del 1800 daba un rango de 6% mientras el 1200 era 8%. La base del 1200 fue mejorada con un soporte totalmente de goma para absorber mas las vibraciones aunque el 1800 tenia una suspensión con unos resortes y goma que no eran mala, pero fue mejorado en el 1200. La base del 1800 es igual en aluminio como en el 1200. El Pich lo hicieron en un botón deslizante que se ha mantenido así hasta nuestros días para el uso mas cómodo para los Dj, en el 1800 era una perilla redonda no es mala pero es mucho mejor como lo hicieron en el 1200. El motor y el brazo son exactamente los mismo y casi no ha variado a pesar de los años que tienen, indiscutiblemente Technics son los reyes. (Nota la base del AT-LP120 es de plástico lo que desmejora mucho la calidad del tornamesa)

May be wrong but I believe you can get a kit to correct the faulty anti skating but it's a pain to fit? Mine does work but you need it set to over 6 for a weight of 1.8 grams to keep it still in the CD test. Good video, cheers.

I am about to purchase my first ever turntable and was initially attracted to the LP120 as it seems to be recommended by many as a good entry-level turntable. However, after seeing this video I am reconsidering. What attracted me to the LP120 was that I didn't need an external preamp and could later purchase one if I decided to dive deeper into vinyl and was looking for more with my listening experience. I am not an audiophile by any means. I own a nice pair of Sennheiser headphones that have lasted me the past few years and continue to work. I guess what I am getting at is, do you think I should invest the time and money into a preowned SL-1200 rather than purchasing an LP120 and upgrading the stylus, the counterweight, the preamp, and anything else customizable down the line? I also want to know if you have any speaker recommendations for a beginner. Would there be a bottleneck if I were to have an SL-1200 with "entry-level speakers"?

Well, no matter what anyone else wants to say, ever since my eyes were opened, I'm not okay with any misdirection, and I promise you you've come to the right person. Based on your comment, I want to challenge you to think of a few other things first, so that you're going into the hobby for all the right reasons. First, ask yourself why you're wanting to get into vinyl records. There's obviously more reasons than just the music for people. If it is about the Hi-Fi experience for you, no built-in preamp will give that to you. I assure you, you'll only want to consider an external source for your sound booster, with no audio filters. Second, are you wanting to become a DJ, or are you like me, and merely obsessed with the layout of the SL-1200? If you plan on just being a casual listener, you could also look at a used Technics SL-1300, or the SL-1600 if you're wanting a direct drive turntable. I chose the SL-1200 primarily because crossing over into the full Audiophile system, I knew if I was going to stay with a direct drive system, then I should get the best of the best. Obviously the SL-1200 can be for DJ, or casual listening, but there are other Technics solutions. Third, ask yourself what your current budget is, and if you feel you can wait a little longer, and save your money up a little more for a nicer, used option. There's vast fields of incredible belt drives, that many will argue will provide greater sound than any direct drive TT. I was impatient in the beginning, and both I, and several of my records ended up suffering for it. I am forever deterring people from using ANY audio technica products no matter what anyone else says. The biggest purpose of vinyl records, is to pursue superior sound. To get there, it can definitely be affordable, but it certainly won't be cheap. If you want decent equipment, expect to pay for used, rather than brand new. As for speakers, if you're looking for superior sound, some powered speakers may be okay, but that's all they'll be, just okay. What you really should be considering are passive speakers, with a really nice amplifier/receiver to power them. If you are definitely not wanting to do a passive option right now, and stick with active speakers, you may consider something by either Klipsch or Audio Engine. Those two brands make all different sizes/options for powered solutions. Whether you go for a belt-driven, or direct drive turntable, just stay away from all imitation TT's of the SL-1200. There's only one SL-1200. I cannot recommend anyone taking the risk with the LP120, or any other imitation decks. I always recommend the real SL-1200 for new or returning users.

As mentioned in older comments, the LP120 anti-skate failure is a well known issue. The anti-skate spring is faulty and is unable to provide the necessary counter tension. If you are comfortable doing the work, Audio Technica sells a replacement spring for $12 shipped. Takes about an hour to install and despite what most tutorials will tell you, you will not need to desolder/solder anything. There is more than enough slack in the tonearm cable to flip it over without having to remove it entirely. Also, no need to hunt down a anti-skate calibration record. Any acrylic turntable mat will do. Amazon has them for as little as $10 shipped.

I know I'm going against the grain here (and I've been a huge fan of all Technics audio equipment from way back in the day - I'm 56) but I've had my (two) LP120's for over seven years and the anti-skating works perfectly on both (using the CD test - thanks for that!). I never purchased them with the expectation that they would be better than or even the equal of the SL1200s - clearly they are not - but for me they have done (and continue to do) exactly what I was hoping for, which is to produce a good sound, remain totally reliable, be a joy to use and to be aesthetically pleasing, all at what I considered to be a really reasonable price at the time (£239 each in December 2014). The SL1200s are of course peerless but I've been absolutely delighted with my LP120s thus far.

I have a Audio Technica lp 120 and always thought it was a good sounding unit until I got a Technics SL1200 mk5 build is so much better and sound is better also the Audio Technica is a good turntable for the money but there is nothing like the Technics SL 1200 series thanks for this video I love your channel.

As a DJ of many years, this turntable is a joke! It has so many faults I would never recommend them, period! A 40 year old 1200 works just as well. I've actually seen one that a guy uses when fixing phono inputs on domestic amps or mixers. It looks old and dirty but if you bought a new lid and had it thoroughly cleaned, it'd run for another 40 years! I bought a brand new Technics SL1200 MK2 with an Ortofon Blue cartridge I bought for playback use only and it looks wonderful! I did get a Stanton ST150 with a curved tone arm to review here in Australia where I live and this deck is fantastic! After giving it a full once over, any DJ will love this deck! I then plugged it in using my phono input and like the 1200 it is as quiet as a church mouse! No cogging, no wow, no flutter but more importantly no acoustic feedback, even in a cued position I could not get it to feedback. It weighs a frigging tonne and any nightclub should get these for vinyl DJs. My final thought on all the decks today is that if it wasn't for the SL1200MK2, none of this clone worship would be happening! The Audio/Technica looks almost exactly the same as a 1200. That unfortunately is where the similarity ends! I do not like this turntable! Imagine if you were spinning with two of these in a club and the stop/start button failed? Nup! As an audio/visual engineer I hate them!

It'll be interesting to see if any of these issues the 120 has will be fixed with the 120X AT just announced at CES. I suspect that at least the antiskate problem will be fixed, since allegedly the newer 120's have the problem fixed (still haven't found anything overly reliable to confirm that). They also claim the preamp was improved, but it's still in the signal path even when it's off, so it's probably still going to color the sound. I actually emailed AT about that last one, and they said that it was supposedly impossible to do it any other way because of how they ground the tonearm.

Hello, i watched tons of videos about AT 120 and i really enjoyed it until i watched you videos :/ now i dont know what to do, my budget is very limited so i have no money for an Technics. Is skating a big trouble for a casual user like me? Currently I own a soundmaster PL186H(some cheap one i got for 60 euros) and i really enjoy it but i wanted to go for something better. Should i still go for a new AT from mid 2019?(btw with problem button i dont think i'll have the problems you had with shipping, here in romania you get a 2 years warranty and the seller is the one that take the product for free from you, repairs it in 15 days and send it back for free)

Everything I provide my viewers is coming from first hand experience. It's not designed to be mean, it's designed to be honest. You need to purchase whatever you want. It's your money, you choose what to do with it. I create the videos I do to help people. That is my only goal. If anything I really wish I would have seen more videos like these before purchasing AT products, because I wouldn't have ever purchased their products if I had known. Just remember that no matter what your decision is, you don't have to buy a Technics, or an imitation of their turntables either. There are so many belt-drive turntables available, like Fluance, Thorens, and Pro-Ject just to name a few. Good luck.

Great video! I knew a guy that had one of those imitation turntables a few years back and was doing a dj event when one his decks started shorting out on him. It wasn't an LP120, but it was one of those 1200 wannabe copies. Really messed up the whole evening for everyone! Videos like this help to remind people why those imitation decks are no good. The real SL1200 has the quality motor, and solid build that everyone needs. Thanks for making this!

I think the biggest difference between the techs and the super oem’s is lifespan... My technics have kicking around longer than super oem’s have existed without a hiccup other than a rca than needs to be changed on one. Over 10 years of use and I bought them 2nd hand. The super oem’s are still pretty great in comparison to what was around before them... but you have to take in mind that they are all built off of technics patent anyway and I have yet to see any super oem’s that hold the same lifespan. Though I would love to see your opinion of the old vestax PDX series.

CJ - I currently have the 120... I have a shure M447 cartridge ... I just tried the CD anti skate test and it slid right over. I have the weight and anti skate set according to suggested specs. Can I assume mine was a FAIL as well or should I try other adjustments as well. I am getting a TECHNICS next week btw. Audio Technica’s customer service isn’t great

Yeah it sounds like another failed LP120, and I would question anyone who says there's nothing wrong with their LP120. It may not happen immediately, but I'm very confident it will happen at a later time. I tried as many adjustments as possible on and off of this video and unfortunately I couldn't find any resolve. I sent this one back to repair the Start/Stop button as well as the anti-skate and they claimed to fix all of the above, but as you can see in the video it unfortunately still didn't work. By getting the SL-1200 you're already taking the correct steps. The LP120 is just not worth it. Get ready to enjoy your long, *LONG* term investment with your SL-1200, the Godfather of all direct drive systems.

I figured out why I was able to. Tt was unbalance, front lower than back, as soon as I balanced the tt, I couldn't adjust anti-skating. So I lowered the front again, about 3/16th inch. Now anti-skating is set.

You were spot on with your comparison. I watched and commented on your previous video and still hate this POS. I'm waiting on my Technics SL-Q2 that I won from Goodwill that I'm going to refurbish that is going to replace my AT-LP120. My main TT is my Rega P2 sitting by my Pioneer PL-7 from 1981. My PL-7 runs circles around the AT-LP120 and always recommend viewers to stay away from the AT-LP120. Mine has the motor pulsation noise even after putting in a new motor that I bought from AT. Just plain junk! Great video!

Technics is hard to beat...I have an SL-23 belt drive table that I bought in 1976 and it is still giving me great service. I recently acquired an SL1200-MKII and was bale to compare the two playing first one and the other using the same album. The sound quality from the SL-23 is nearly as good, if not on par with the infamous SL1200-MKII...to me that says a lot about Technics and the quality of their turntables, at least for these two turntables.

A good and honest review. I personally own LP 120, but I never felt shy to express its shortcomings. The main negativities of Lp 120 are: 1. Tonearm base too high for proper VTA 2. Faulty antiskate 3. Resonating platter 4. Crap like inbuilt phono stage 5. Cheap quality rca output cables I damped the platter and tone arm, raised the record level by adding an extra rubber mat, lowered the cartridge by adding an improverised Houdini under the headshell (VTA now set properly), removed the internal preamp and changed the output cables (running out directly from arm base) and rca jacks. Also I added a 4 inch thick foam slab under its feet for better isolation and removed the dustcover. Now, when hooked up to an external valve phono preamp, it sounds phenomenal almost 3 times its original cost.

and about 5 times the work. Hopefully it holds together and you don't have to send it back to AT, or continually deal with any other problems. I just recommend the solution of paying once for the very best.

I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to spray a rubberized coating underneath the aluminum platter of the AT120. I currently own two ATLP60x tables & have played thousands of records on them & the only problem was one of the units external power supplies failed the 1st week & Audio Technica sent a brand new one. Here's my thing I can't hear a difference in the sound of a 1200 or a 120 & from my experience with the 60s series reliability hasn't been an issue with Audio Technica.

i still have my 20 yo T 1200 and it still runs like new :) One thing, the tonearm is a bit loose and I do not know how to adjust it? All screws are tight. Any suggestions?

Absolutely! Based on what you said, it sounds like it could be the pivot screw inside the lock screw. To access the lock screw, you need to first completely unscrew the pivot screw on the far right (facing the outer edge). You will then see a small screw wrapped around it. This is the lock screw. Completely remove both, and then very carefully ensure the pivot screw is aligned and screw it straight back in. Over the course of 20+ years these screws can sometimes become offset just from so much pivoting. You're just ensuring that they are properly re-aligned. Obviously you then want to securely screw the lock screw back in place around the pivot screw so it's all back in place. If this does nothing, then it could be the pivot bearing inside the tonearm which could mean the tonearm (or pivot bearings) may need to be replaced. Let me know if that helps!

Great review! Kinda set me back from buying an used LP-120. I currently have an LP-60 and I'm more than happy since I started with a Crosley type and I got a Gemini (belt drive) which was a piece of crap. Reality is many used turntables are expensive on my country. The cheapest Technics SL1200 I found is in crap state, abused and such and selling for 450$!

I have a question pertaining to features. What I like about either turntable are the manual features and controls, allowing you to have more direct manipulation of the table functions. However, when I was shopping for high-end turntables (your Clear Audio, etc.) I notice that these very expensive turntables, whether direct-or-belt-driven, have almost no controls beyond on/off and 33/45. No pitch control, nothing, not even 78RPM. *Would you happen to know why the higher-end turntables don't allow for all these manual control options?* Because it really irks me that they don't.

Many of these features are for DJ's. I'm not a DJ, but I'm obsessed with the SL-1200 design which was why I went with the LP120 in the beginning. Many of these features are realistically not even used unless you start back-masking, EQ mixing, or scratching. Pitch control is a timing mechanism, but it could also be used for "re-aligning" sound if you started having playback issues with your motor. I've never had that issue even when I had my LP120, so I don't feel that you're missing out on too much. As far as 78rpm playback, have you ever done that with shellac records? You also can't use a standard .7 mil stylus, but a cart with a 3 mil stylus attached. Those are typically very expensive, and not many available. If you have the means of doing it, then I suppose the 78 rpm feature would be desired, otherwise it's useless to any other records you own. I don't own any shellac records, so I never used that feature either. I wouldn't worry about it too much, those Clear Audio turntables are very high end and I see the value in them. If you're obsessed with the SL-1200 design like I am, then just buy a used SL-1200. I've still not had one issue with mine.

@@cjsvinyl I collect soundtracks and I've been able to find a number of them from the '40s, as well as some other albums of swing and jazz. Nothing particularly valuable, but I developed a habit of "rescuing" shellac records that are abandoned or thrown away,. particularly if they're clean and in good shape. Call me crazy, but I don't like the idea of something being thrown away simply because it's old or unpopular when it could be given a home. So having 78RPM to me seems like it should be standard feature even if the other features you mentioned aren't. But thanks for the feedback, I didn't realize that most people just wanted playback and speed control on their tables. I prefer knobs, switches, and dials up the whazoo because of the manual control.

@@Theomite Very cool! I definitely hear you on the collectable side. I wouldn't suggest getting rid of something either just based on being "unpopular" I was more referring to shellac records generally being in horrible shape due to severe wear and tear over time. Not only that, but you generally don't see many situations where people have properly cared for those kind of records and they just end up in a big dusty box stacked on top of one another, no sleeves, and exposed to the elements. Very sad, but if you can restore them, that's awesome! You sound like a very tactile person when you mentioned knobs and switches. I would HIGHLY recommend looking at the Technics SL-1300 or the 1600. Both of them have those very solid knobs and switches on the right and left sides. Although, not a 78rpm option that I'm aware of. Consider the Technics SL-1200 MK4 for 78rpm. More rare, but would have everything you're looking for. Otherwise, I believe the newer MK7 has these extra features including reverse playback. You would need to google that to be sure.

I have a Trio/Kenwood KD1033 turntable which I bought in 1976 and which has been my faithful listening companion ever since - with no breakdowns. I currently have a Nagaoka MP110 cartridge on it. Now our other system is an old BSR music centre. Why? 'Cause I have got into 78's. I have Bing Crosby, and I have Fat's Waller. The BSR plays them. I am never gonna replace my beloved Trio Deck but have thought of buying an ATLP-120 precisely 'cause it has 78rpm and pitch control and the option of changing the cartridge for a dedicated 78rpm cartridge. Audio Technica manufacture a dedicated 78rpm cartridge that sells for £69.99. They also sell a dedicated mono cartridge. I have some mono Beatles records and a mono copy of John Mayall with Eric Clapton and was thinking of investing in an Audio Technica mono cartridge for them. I guess people new to record collecting should think about what they want to collect and why, and then buy a turntable that fits their collecting habits and fits their budget. P.S. I wont be getting rid of the BSR 'cause it's an autochanger stacker and is perfect for playing my 100 or so 1960's singles 6 at a time. 😃

Beautiful, and important piece of audiophile history. They only made that model from 1975 to '79 if memory serves correctly. As for 78rpm playback, I could be completely off basis here, but wasn't there a vintage model called the Strathclyde STD350D or maybe it was the STD305D? I'm almost positive that one was equipped to play 33, 45, and 78rpm. It had a nice counterweight and easily-removable cartridge. You might check that one out if you're wanting something to play those shellac records of yours. I only want people to have the best options for their records long term, and if that's an LP120 for you, then go for it, but otherwise I would absolutely push for a different brand after the experiences that myself and others have had with AT products. The anti-skating issue is fixed on the LP120x. I just tested it using a CD.

Unfortunately it's not. There's multiple users uploading new videos of the LP120x still having anti-skate problems. Plus, my LP120 worked in the beginning. It took a few months before it went completely out, so just because it works out of the box, doesn't mean it's going to keep working down the road. My SL-1200 is more than 16 years old, and it still works better than any brand new LP120, and will continue to indefinitely.

I own a GLI pro, and have had my issues with it. The pitch is not working properly. When I slide it to 0, it’s faster so I gotta lower the pitch to 2.5 to get it to sound regular. And the anti skate is crazy as well. I was thinking of getting a lp120 to replace this one. I’ve watched other reviews of people praising it but they seem like beginners and never seen a Technics 1200 in action. Thanks to this I think I’ll save my money and get a Technics.

Yes the anti-skate doesnt work on my AT LP120 but it was a good 200 - 300$ cheaper than a Technics. For most part it plays my records just fine. Not all of us are made of money!

No one is saying you are, or should be. The point of this video is to provide informative details so you at least have the truth. The rest is up to you. Also, the price tag of Technics SL-1200 is not always as high as you make it sound. We purchased ours on Ebay for only 300.00 more than what we paid for the LP120. You just have to do research, and you can find EX+ graded SL-1200's for around the same price if you just look.

I’m not gonna say anything bad about the LP120. However used 1200’s can be found for the price of an LP120 or close to it. Back in 2015 I bought a 1200 mK2 in great condition for $225. Last year I replaced it with a m5g in like new condition that I scored for $300, the same price as a LP120.

I don't know anything about that device, but as long as it has either USB, or RCA composite (left and right audio) then it should be fine. Most devices are compatible, but I can't vouche for it's quality.

I wish I could friend, but audio technica never told me, they just said I had to send it back to them for repairs. Logically, it's most likely an electrical contact that just died out for being subpar equipment. This was why we bought a used SL-1200 and haven't had one issue since.

I have a At-LP120X (X is important) and need to say this modification is far better than old 120 version. - anti skating is functional and works well with any test (CD or VIDEO discs) - more solid body - no problem with direct drive motor - built in preamp is working good, I think.

My LP120's anti-skate worked in the beginning too. It doesn't mean your anti-skate will work indefinitely. The 'X' version also removed the height adjustment dial so now VTA is worse than ever. The pop-up light is now a detachable plug that you have to plug in every time you want an indicator light on that cartridge. The body is the same ABS plastic as the LP120, so it's not more solid. The 45 adapter is now plastic so it's the same as the LP60. Give the motor time, I'm sure it will eventually short out. You don't pay 50.00 less for the LP120x and expect for the motor to be stronger. Internal preamps are a horrible substitute for an external preamp/amplifier. The point is experiencing Hi-Fi, not reducing sound to CD. There's no point in listening if you aren't going to embrace it for what it's supposed to be.

Started DJing in the mid 80's with a pair of SLBD22's. Quickly upgraded to a set of gently used 1200MK2's with 680EL needles/carts. Those 12's were bulletproof back then, and they STILL work flawlessly now in 2021 (do the math). That's the legendary Tech 1200 build quality for ya. Of course my choice of needles have changed over the years (Ortofon Elektro's and Gold's now). Anyway, when I hear someone complain about the cost of a new 1200, or a used one in good condition, I just laugh. Considering a 1200 Mk2/3/4 (whatever) will likely be the last turntable someone would ever own, their price no longer seems too expensive... well, except for the limited edition 1200G/GAE. lol

I'm more of a direct drive guy, so I would say yes to the GR, but the MH 7.3 is a completely different turntable. Direct drive versus belt drive, and I don't know what the price difference is to justify which one you should purchase, but like I said, I'm a firm believer in the direct drive system and the SL-1200 series is the one to go with for that type of TT.

I have SL1210MK2 and Nagaoka MP-110 with the Nagaoka headshell too. It seems that your height adjuster doesn't go flush with the arm mount. Anyway you should get the perfect height for that combo using the original 6mm rubber mat (or something similar) or use some spacers between the cartridge and the headshell. The mk5 you have came with that dj style slipmat and not the 'audiophile' rubber mat like the OG ones :) Felt mats aren't the best if you wan't some quality in sound and you are not dj'ng. Anyway it is a great turntable like you say. Have fun and keep posting these great videos!

You haven't seen my other videos have you? We already own the original Technics rubber mat, like the ones I demonstrated in Part 1 of this video, and the Nagaoka head shell still slants. We only used the slip mats in this video to show off the brand names. The rubber mats were used during the sound test from Part 1, because they were both the exact same measurement. Plus, I mentioned that the head shel looks slanted even when it's not attached to the tonearm. Like I mentioned in this video, I'm worried it's the head shell.

I have an SL-1200 from the late 90s as my main table. It's bulletproof. Speed is dead on accurate and there's almost nothing to break on it. It was a relief after fighting with problems on cheaper tables. The only issue I ever had was that a corner of the soundproofing on the bottom of the platter started to peel, and it was rubbing on the housing below, but an X-acto knife fixed that. I got mine used in the early 2010s for cheap, because the vinyl community at large still looked down on them as "DJ tables" at the time. I consider myself lucky. Prices shot up shortly after and are considerably higher for a used deck now. I do know people with the AT LP-120, and they seem to have had better luck than you did for the most part... but the difference in build quality is still better on a Tec-12. There's no getting around it. One thing: could you fix the VTA on the AT LP-120 by putting a very thick mat on it?

You should be able to. Most powered speakers have a built in DAC. However, if you don't have an external preamp or amplifier, then you'll have to utilize the built in preamp inside the turntable which is a poor substitute for attaining high-fidelity.

The Audio Technica is a Hanpin. Nothing more, nothing less. The motor has baked in rumble, nothing can be done about it. It has a wobbly platter, the tone arm has play on the bearings, the speed is not spot on like a Technics, it is a plastic affair, the plinth is entirely made of plastic. It gets its weight from a slab of steel on the bottom of the hollow plinth so no dampening at all. Many earlier units have a barely working anti skate. The only good part of the product is the cartridge it comes with. For the price the cartridge performs quite well but it is not able to lift the total package to an acceptable level. It is a shame Audio Technica wants its name on the product. Having said that, for the occasional user who ony want to digitise records it may be a cheap way to do it. For the serious listener, the audiophile and the dj alike, I would not reccommend it.

You see, the reason why I want to buy the lp 120 is for convenience since it has a built-in amplifier. But, if the quality looks like the ones I see in youtube, then I am getting cold feet :(

@@MrBaxterrify The Pro-ject Essential II sounds great! Granted I've never used it, but I'm thoroughly familiar with Pro-Ject and the fact that they have much better turntables than Audio Technica that you can know for sure. Have you also considered the Fluance line? The Fluance RT 82 or the 83 may be a much nicer bet for what you're looking for. If you're okay going vintage, look at the Thorens TD-160. Solid as a rock!

Not really, because after my experience with the LP60 and the LP120, Audio Technica is just a Japanese company that outsources all of their work to China, creating junk products. The LP1240 is just another cheap imitation of the SL-1200 trying to be even more DJ, than the LP120 was. I don't care about bells and whistles, I care about buying a turntable that works and isn't going to mess up my LP's in the long run. To me, that's worth the extra 300.00 we spent to own the SL-1200.

Those are just more imitations, not to mention I have heard negative things about both brands. This video is supposed to show that cheaper (less expensive) is not better, and the biggest reason is the start/stop button going out. You're taking your own risk when you purchase cheaper turntables. I didn't used to think that the LP120 was that cheap, but I had to wake up and see the light. In the end it's your money, I only make these videos to help.

I thought I would also put my trust into them. Everyone praised the LP120, and in the beginning so did I, but I was wrong, and so is anyone else who lifts up AT garbage. I promise you, just budget your money properly and buy a used one from Ebay. You won't regret it.

I've also have theese two turntables,my SL1210 works just just fine,The 120 has issues,you have mention some of the issues,but i have a Couple more.First The Platter are not strait,the platter is kind of dipping,it's tiny but it's irritating because you can in fact see the platter dipping on every spin,it's not suppose to be like that,(if it had been a plastic platter,i could have understand this),but this looks like aluminium,,so this feels wrong in my opinion. A second Issue i hava is that the headschell is a plastic shell,it came with the AT 95 E allready mounted as promise,but when the headshell is plastic,it's much more difficult to sett up the turntable,special the counterweight and the antiskating. I've tryed your way with a CD,and like yours 120,mine also failed the same way,tonearm skided into the Center,i tryed to adjust,but no luck,so i concider the antiskating is caput The Third issue with my 120,is yhat the USB hub doesn't work properly,i have downloadet the Audacity,and when i start recording in stereo,one channel just have a rumbeling noise,the other one sounds alright. I don't know if that is the computer or the turntable issue,but i think i might be the turntable. So my conclusion is tha the LP120 is not the deasent turntable as we think,just saying.

Another issue with the Audio Technica 120 is the tone arm fall very fast requiring damping fluid

Very nice vdo you have done. Actually, if I a not wrong, Pioneer has also launched a dj turntable that looks exactly alike AT120 and Technics SL1200. So it seems that it is not a matter of cloning by AT only rather some unknown Chinese company is manufacturing these machines and both AT and Pioneer are selling them under their own brand names. Given the fact that China is the master of copying and preying on budget-phile customers, it is quite reasonable that these junk jeweleries are more showy and less in performance.
