The analog audio community (specifically the vinyl portion) can be very polarized. The concern for this that I have seen is really a non-issue (in my opinion). The factory setting applies a higher gram force, and that older models of the tonearm could push down more inwards over time. It's the difference in a goose down feather to the face, or a stiff eagle feather to the face. Some act as if it's comparing a goose down feather to the face, or a brick to the face, this is a fine easy-to-use turn table.

I bought one of these recently as a second turntable for first plays and testing of second-hand records from junk shops, record fairs and Discogs. My main turntable is a Rega Planar 8 with Apheta 3 going into the MC input of a Rega Aria phono stage, so the Audio Technica plugged nicely into the MM input and I can flip between the two using the front switch on the Aria. I wanted something that was cheap but not nasty, and that had a removable/replacable stylus so it could sustain the kind of abuse I was planning to give it without going beyond beer money in expense, and the AT met my requirements perfectly. I don't suppose many people run one of these through a Rega Aria, but it's surprisingly good; the Aria cleans and tightens the output and lets the intrinsic quality of the AT come through fully; it's obviously not going to compete with the Planar 8, but it's not too shabby at all and can certainly give a good account of itself. I fully agree with one of the attractions of a deck like this being that there's no setup or faffing about involved (the same is true of the Planar 8). 20 years ago I might have had to be held back from going down that rabbit hole, but these days I just want something I can take out of the box, plonk down on a level surface, plug in and start playing music on.

Counterweights are important in my opinion - this one doesn't have a "counterweight" because it is set by AT in factory (it offers a static gram force intended for the stylus included) recently the community has decided to make largely unfounded remarks about it for what I assume was just boredom picking on suitcase turntables. So just sharing my experience: Bought this table two years ago but suddenly a day ago the audio just stopped working correctly. I assumed it was the needle needing a replacement but replaced it with two different needles and neither worked well. My feeling is that it's something else in the cartridge head that's broken but since this TT does not have a detachable cartridge I have no way of validating. The machine is out of warranty so I'm gonna go try to see if I can find someone to fix it here locally. If I could do over I would definitely buy a fully manual machine and with a detachable cartridge head. Looking for alternatives incase I can't repair (or repair is not worth the expense) and I'm leaning more towards something like the Lp120. In general I'm avoiding any machines that have key non-replaceable parts or cables in the future, and as a hunch I'd stay away from automatic stylus movements as I feel the odds of those malfunctioning at some point must be a lot higher than the manual ones.

Do you mean you are only getting audio from the left or right channel as in one speaker - or that it's playback is mono with no L/R fade where you know L/R fade should exist? If it's the first, check the speaker connections first, if through a receiver check if you have an A/B or L/R setting and try those. And the obvious is the "is the vinyl you are playing stereo or mono?" question If Azimuth is off, with this turntable I would say start with trying a replacement stylus for the 3600l, if its still off, and its none of the above it may need service.

@EightSixMatt8 ай бұрын
Tracking settings are set at the factory level with this one. the LP3 model is one that allows for adjustments (and is also automatic like this one).
@waschkadse Жыл бұрын
I don't understand the whole adjustment thing. Does a fully automatic turntable automatically do it as well or better? Or is it better to have a turntable where you can adjust the tonearm and needle manually? Can you compare it to driving automatic cars and shift cars?
@EightSixMatt Жыл бұрын
On an automatic you set the record on, press start and it does the rest - raises the tone arm, finds the edge, plays the side, returns the tone arm and waits for you to flip or hit start again. On a manual you lift the arm, find the edge you lower the arm, when it plays to the center (depending on your tt) it keeps spinning waiting for you - or shuts off waiting for you to come retrieve the tone arm and return it to its cradle. Is that what you’re asking? You can also lift the arm and pick a song, anti skating can be set, but changing the cart on this turntable is not possible. Sorry if I’m not following what you’re asking.
@waschkadse Жыл бұрын
@@EightSixMatt I am new to the whole topic and kind of overwhelmed sorry - So I saw a lot of players that had the two little screws on top of the cartridge with which you adjust the needle. Now I am wondering if it just isn't necessary with this specific player because it is automatic or if it is something that only "good players" have.
@EightSixMatt Жыл бұрын
@@waschkadse ahh that type of adjustment is fine tuning-esque. On this one it’s a non option. If you install a new cartridge on a turntable accounting for azimuth is what you may need to do. When the needle sits in the groove, if it’s off, one of your channels may have distortion/poor sound/terrible sound. You can adjust the cartridge and use a mirror or special protector to ensure the stylus is sitting straight/correctly so that it rides the grooves well as the vinyl spins. Unless you plan on buying a tt with the abilities to swap a cart, and you spend the money on a new cart to swap, this will be a non issue for you most likely. Even if you do, it’s not a difficult task and most headshells are easy enough to setup (with mild patience)

Is it better with external phono?
@EightSixMatt Жыл бұрын
That's a good question and a bit subjective. the STRDH190 processes phono, and does 'well enough,' but I ran it to my Fosi which I liked better (and while not an actual tube amp, the tubes add a different color to the sound) - ultimately I would say it really depends (but is largely negligible differences that will be based off your phono preamp device). For a TT like this one - active line level stuff is more the target, with my Fluance or UTurn I run them through different Preamps that (to me) have a different 'feel.' Long story longer: if you ask me, for a 3600l cart on a largely entry level tt, some active line level speakers are where its at. Sound can be so subjective though and its hard to answer with definitive opinions. Sorry if that doesn't help much.

1:22 Those styli need different weights so they won't work 100% and they could damage your vinyl!! For example, AT91 (the yellow one) needs about 2.5 grams but AT3600L needs 3.5 grams. That's quite a difference.
@EightSixMatt Жыл бұрын
It does not need 3.5 grams nor is it weighted at 3.5 grams on the lp60x in this video. Gf scale measures it at 2.5 which is in the recommended range of the 91, as well as the 3600, it’s doable and fine. (There was an issue with the spring - as well as different mats increasing measurements by adding lift resistance)

Hi. Quick question: if you play it with the lid closed, does the arm work correctly when going back to its base position after the record has ended? In mine, when the record finishes and the arm gets raise, the cartridge makes contact with the lid (as if it was raised too much), and it can't move at all (probably because its making friction against the lid).

The lid should not obstruct any function.
