Gerald, based on your recommendation I signed up for Curiosity Stream + Nebula, but I didn't see any way to become a creator on Nebula. So I contacted support and they told me I needed to be personally recommended to become a creator on Nebula, which is not what you said in your advertorial. So how about recommending me to be a creator, since you got me to buy their bundle?

I like this, please do Raycons just so we can stop pretending these KZbinrs actually use them. Edit: People in the comments clearly missing the point. None of the dudes actually use them. 99% of them use airpods and the other 1% use Samsung or Jabra Elites. But in the ad reads they talk about how much they love their Raycons. It's disingenuous advertising to sell a crappy product.

@@SaxSpy I’m sorry, are you really comparing open back studio headphones that start their bass roll-off above 100Hz to wireless earbuds that actually measure more low end than any pair of Beats released to date? I get that audio taste is completely subjective, but I can’t help but think this comment might be at least a little disingenuous. Yes, both of those things make sound, but you might as well be comparing the Raycons to a set of desk speakers. Or maybe a work van to a (really terrible) motorcycle.

@@ephektz its not disingenuous. I have monitors, headphones and ear buds. I saying earbuds dont have to be as good as the rest for sonic profiles, but they should be comfortable, not have delay and work well. The JBL fit wasnt great, had so much delay that lips wouldnt match audio, the swiping was overly sensitive and required an extra app for functions that raycon fitness had built in.

I remember you putting out a video saying you were burning out on the constant review content, and wanted to add more to your wheelhouse. It's always great to see you enjoy yourself, and it comes across clearly in the video too! Keep doing what makes you happy. I also think this is unironically a great idea, as there's a lot of questionable products peddled by youtubers who are just trying to pay bills, veracity be damned.

This is the thing about that bit that speeds it up. When you listen at the speed that is perfect for you (even if it's really fast) you take it in. If your personal sense of time can be adjusted properly then it is really great. I listen at a pretty fast speed. Sounds totally normal to me, but I picked my dad up and he made me slow it down because to him it sounded too chipmunky. That made me laugh a lot because I was in a total zone with it. Didn't notice. (I have more than 600 titles). Yeah... so it makes a difference. It's funny, when I am with someone who listens at normal speed I get antsy because I can't stand it at that speed. When audiobools become your only way you take in books your brain jumps on it. Story by word of mouth was the way it was (the only way for thousands of years) for a reason I guess. Good video man.

Audible has really been a game changer for truck drivers. I mean now podcasts exist so I don't spend nearly as much time on audiobooks, but I think I have 400 of them in just audible. I also use a couple of other audiobook apps for the classics. You get to the point where there are certain narrators that you love, and will pick out a book specifically for that. I love reading in any form. Even if it is with my ears. More often than not on the weekends I use my Kindle, but when you are driving 11 hours a day and only get a 10-hour break at night, audiobooks are legit. I pay the $22 a month to get two credits, but they have some pretty amazing sales. Right now is the summer sale with up to 85% off everything they offer. I think I just picked up another 20 audiobooks, which will last me a couple of months, for like 70 bucks.

I would love to do an Audible sponsored video. I've listened to over a thousand hours of books (over a 100 titles) and it's my best spent content subscription out of any of the streamers in the last decade. The amount of podcast ads now in most of my favourite shows is starting to make listening to them exhausting. I pay for ad free feeds for my favourites, but I'm up to like $50 a month just for ad free podcast feeds. It's nice to support the creators of the podcast directly, but it still is wildly expensive.

Great video as always! I have used Audible for years, I use the 24credits a year plan and I've been very happy (never used any KZbinr discount). I use it daily, when walking the dog or doing chores around the house. Some narrators are so good, that I choose "books" based on who narrates them! R.C. Bray being one of my absolute favourite narrators. That, to me, makes this service pretty unique. OK, it's not Audible, it's any audiobook service, but anyways... Also, I now talk about the length of a book in hours, not pages 😅

I love this series and I love Audible. I read a lot of sci-if and fantasy and I work 12 hour shits that require me to use my eyes…so my ears are very available. I listen to 30+ hour books. The books retail for more than the 12 bucks I pay for the subscription, so it works out great. And you can buy 3 credits for 30 bucks, which is usually a $60 saving for me. Great vid Gerald.

Adding subtitles improved the experience as it turned me into a super speed reader and/or listener. The additional benefit of this method was that I can not recall a single thing that you said. Clearly great for most KZbin videos. I hope a x3 mode is added soon.

Great video! You do realize you can return audiobooks, if you do not like them, correct? I do not remember what the criteria is, but definitely worth looking into. On a side note, for someone that has a hard time getting through books when reading, being able to listen to them has opened up a whole new world, much like KZbin has for the masses. I also find that I have better retention when listening to a book over reading it. Not sure why, but it definitely does depend upon the type of book. Please keep going on this series. A little disappointed that you didn't mention Libby, which allows you audiobooks for free from your local library. This is the main argument against Audible, since you're already paying for the books with your local taxes. There are plenty of other arguments, but really hard to get past paying for something you can already get for free. Audible is the bottled water of the book world. Also I do agree with the idea of jumping right into 1.5x, it's something to build up to. I started at 1.1, then 1.2, etc and found myself comfortable at 1.5. If I listen to a book at 1.0 the guy sounds drunk, haha.

Great and insightful review, although I wish you would have weighed Audible's Value against it's competition, Libraries. At least in the Seattle area, our county has a library system that allows you to put holds on, check out, and listen to audiobooks online, and it's easy enough when I know I'm going to be on a trip to check out some Audio books I'm interested in and download them to an app on my phone for Free. I'm sure not everyone has a local library that works the same way but I know there are larger library systems that don't limit their online users to those who live locally. This is a separate point really and I don't feel like it takes any value away from your review. I'm glad you made this video as it seems like one that'd be fun to make and I genuinely appreciate the points you had about the sponsor, so I'm looking forward to more of these! Please disregard if it's something that you feel would take too much time or detract from your enjoyment in making these, but when you review a sponsor, it'd be cool to hear something even surface level about opensource/free or cheaper alternatives (Like the price difference of buying a recipe book and ingredients for meals instead of subscribing to a meal prep company) Above all, that intro is awesome!

I've been a sub for Audible for 12 years, and it's awesome! Not only can you return any book within one year of reading, you can do it whether you've read the whole book or not. I did that so often they finally made me talk to a support staff before I could "exchange" a book, and the guy and I talked books for forty five minutes. I gave him some of my faves for suggestions and he ended up giving me the exchange, AND giving me TWO MORE free books! Not only that, but their free section has a TON of great books that cost you nothing! And once they're in your library, even if they charge for them in the future, your free copy is yours forever! I drive a truck for a living; imagine how quickly my day goes listening to audiobooks instead of the radio... Audible is WELL worth the money IMO. My favorite books: by far, Nelson DeMille's "The Gold Coast" and "The Gate House" (a series) with the best narrator on Audible, Christian Rummel. I just listened to his narration on "The Grand Hotel", a free selection, and he must have done fifty voices, all different, in various dialects! He does thirty or more in Gold Coast/Gate House alone, male, female, blue blood Goald Coaster, Mob Boss, Mrs. Mob Boss, and a wealth of others. It's all about the narrator! Story is only good if narration is good. Scott Brick seems to be the most popular narrator, but I can't STAND the guy! Thanks for this vid! Looking forward to more, but you gotta make sure to do your homework 'cause you're missing important details on this one.

Really like this idea, thanks Gerald. I've been using Audible for over 10 years on virtual daily basis. Some tips: 1) Only long books are worth the subscription price, if you are "reading" short books just buy them. 2) The app is not great, always trying to force you into purchasing screens as opposed to the media player. 3) The Audible return policy is top notch, if you don't like a book, just return it basically no questions asked and you get your credit back. Overall, it is well worth it.

When I tried audible, I found its other services lacking, so I looked at it as paying $15 for one audiobook once a month. Not a terrible price, but you can get them elsewhere cheaper. For one, libraries have audiobooks and unless it's one you want to listen to over and over again, there's really no reason to buy it. But if you do want to buy it, there are services like chirp where you can get daily deals on audiobooks for $2-5. You can get really good audiobooks from them if you're patient. But even without the deals, I find they're often cheaper than audible.

I actually do buy the Kindle and the Audible sometimes (you can get 'deals' that way as well). One, I only buy Audible books I don't have a subscription. Inside Kindle (on my iPad) some have the ability to listen to the audio while reading along (Whispersync). Now I mainly read non-fiction and a lot of Theology books so being able to highlight and take notes is very handy. I'm semi-retired so yes I can take a 3-hour lunch ... LOL Audible and Kindle are both parts of the Amazon Empire... Audible was easy but it will be very interesting on some of the other sponsored videos that are clearly overpriced.

Man. I tried audible. Once. I purchased the first book in a three part John LeCarre series. Then when I was ready for book two I went back and all three had been pulled off the service 😔 Literary blueballs.

I actually think this could be a good idea, i must say i actually look for actual reviews of the products offered by the sponsors. And, you could have tested the audio quality of the recordings like the data rate :p I use audible a lot, and i find there is some fluff in their catalogue, but i’m really glad to see how often they have books that just came out in audio form. Looking forward to the mext one in the series :)

Side-comment on audiobook content: Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama (Written and Narrated) By Bob Odenkirk is one I'd highly recommend too.

You were not sponsored, you could have mentioned REAL LIBRARIES that let you rent audiobooks for FREE. I absolutely refuse to get an audible subscription because of this. [In the US] A lot of library systems let you get cards online so long as you live in the state. Most libraries use the Libby app, some use hoopla, check out your local library website to see what they use] If in CA, check out sac and San Jose libraries Also anyone can get access to Brooklyn public library for $50/year Audible attempts to block access to books by making deals with publishers to make them audible exclusives. Access to these books should not be determined by whether or not you can afford a subscription. Also you get as many books a month as you want via libraries (you finish one, return it and check out another... But you can usually have several checked out at a time)

I love Audible. The only reason i cancelled my subscription after a year or so is because i had listened to all the books in my categories of interest, they have these discounts where you can purchase a bunch of credits for under €20, went all in on those. Ofcourse it is true that reading has advantages over listening, but in reality that comparison fails because i would never have read those books since i simply dont have the time, while there are always moments available for listening (and its cheaper to boot). Thanks for the entertaining video.

I don't know if anyone said this yet, but you can also return the book if you are unhappy with it.

Very good review and nice series concept. You could teach Peter McKinnon a thing or two about impressions 😉. More. TQ Adam (Real Person) except when I’m angry, of course.

Legitimately laughed out loud at using someone else's voice for the internal narrator - I totally do that for characters in fiction works.

Hi Gerald. Loved this! (speaking as a biologist, please review more fruit! 🤣) I like the idea of Nebula, but I make videos for my students. I can require them to watch free videos al la YT, but not to spend $ on another platform. Might you offer a student plan, like free for 3 months (semester) at a time? Or I can give them a code that allows them to watch my videos for the term?

Audible is a hit and miss The Expanse books are narrated by Jefferson Mays, who is just a godly narrator and it's absolute perfection But just about every audio book I've tried is painful to listen to

When you compare that you can get a YEAR of Nebula+Curiosity Stream which gives you access to ALL THE VIDEOS for about the same as a MONTH of Audible - which only comes with ONE book and if you want to listen to another YOU HAVE TO PAY AUDIBLE MORE - 5:10 is the pricing really "not terrible"? If it were a flat sub price, I'd agree - not terrible. Honestly, I wouldn't complain about having to pay a price per book if Audible just went with THAT model - free account, pay-per-book (maybe with the odd free promo). But because Audible wants a buck each way - literally - they sting you again and again because they want to do ALL THE PAYMENT MODELS (i shouldn't say that too loud, heaven forbid they start to do sponsor reads between chapters)
My old videos sucked. Here's why...
